Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday hailed the peaceful ending to a standoff between the navy and Gaza-bound foreign aid ship the Rachel Corrie, which was carried off without violence. The Israeli army released footage of the ship before and during the army's intervention. Duration: 00:55
Israeli troops have boarded a humanitarian aid ship flying under an Irish flag, sixty kilometres off the blockaded coast of Gaza. The Israeli army says they met no resistance and the vessel is now being towed to the port city of Ashdod.
Aerial footage from 5 June 2010 when the IDF naval commandos boarding the ship attempting to break the maritime closure of the Gaza Strip, they did so with the full compliance of the ship's crew members. According to initial reports, there was no violence or injuries amongst the soldiers or the crew, as the use of force was unnecessary and no shots were fired. The boat and its crew are being led to the Ashdod port and will be transferred to the custody of the appropriate authorities. During the morning hours a naval force identified the ship and, as it did in the past, issued numerous calls for it to dock in Ashdod and transfer the goods via the crossings upon inspection. The calls were ignored and it became clear that the boat intended to reach Gaza's shores. The Israel Navy contacted the boat and clarified again that the Gaza Strip was under maritime closure and due to security risks in the area, it would not be permitted to enter. A short while ago, with the compliance of the crew members, the naval force boarded the ship without incident under the command of the Commander of the Israel Navy, Vice Admiral Eliezer Marom, and is now directing it to the Ashdod port. Any organization or country wishing to transfer humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip can do so legally via the established ground crossings by coordinating with the relevant authorities, as is done on a near daily basis.

Contact has been lost with activists onboard an Irish-flagged aid ship heading towards Gaza. In their last communication they said the Israeli navy was shadowing them. The Rachel Corrie is attempting to get emergency supplies and building materials to the blockaded area. It comes just days after Israeli commandos raided an aid flotilla, leaving nine people dead.
The Israeli Navy has intercepted a new Gaza-bound aid ship Rachel Corrie following its earlier attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, pro-Palestinian activists say. "They are being followed," Greta Berlin of the Free Gaza group told Reuters on Saturday. Berlin said earlier that the Rachel Corrie was some 55 km (35 miles) west of Gaza in the Mediterranean. The new ship, scheduled to arrive in the Gaza Strip on Saturday, was seeking to break a three-year-long blockade of the coastal sliver. There are no immediate reports of violence on board the Irish ship. The activists have already rejected an Israeli demand to unload its cargo in the Israeli port of Ashdod, adding that they would not resist Israeli forces in case of an attack. The Rachel Corrie is carrying some 750 tons of aid including medical and school supplies, and 15 people including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire and former UN assistant secretary general Denis Halliday. The ship is named after Rachel Corrie, a US activist killed in 2003 as she tried to prevent an Israeli military bulldozer from razing a Palestinian home in Rafah Reload from encryptedreality0

However, in the last hour or so (it is 6am New York City time on Saturday, June 5, 2010), it has been apparently confirmed that Israel has in fact boarded the vessel without incident. Reports claim that early Saturday morning, June 5, 2010, Israel boarded a ship named the "Rachel Corrie" that was headed towards Gaza. CNM has the information in the video and in the links below. On 10 March 2010, in Haifa, northern Israel, the family of Rachel Corrie, the altruistic young American and perhaps the first of the New Fourth Estate-citizen journalists- is bringing a civil suit against the Israeli defense ministry seeking accountability for Rachels death under the wheels of a US Made Caterpillar D9R Bulldozer driven by Israeli army troops as Rachel stood up in defense of the home of a pharmacists with five children in Gaza seven years ago and four days before George W. Bush ordered the bombing of Baghdad. Four eye witnesses three Britons and an American who were on the scene when Rachel was run down and over twice are scheduled to give evidence. The Israeli government initially blocked the activists from entering Israel but Britain and the US exerted strong pressure, and they were allowed entry. All are members of the International Solidarity Movement, a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land using nonviolent, direct-action methods and principles. Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister at the time of Corries death, promised a thorough, credible and transparent investigation would be conducted. An internal military inquiry cleared the two soldiers operating the bulldozer was even criticized by US officials. Human Rights Watch noted it fell far short of the transparency, impartiality and thoroughness required by international law. Rachel has been eulogized and demonized, celebrated and castigated. BBC 100310 [linktv/Mosaic] - Corrie was volunteering with the group International Solidarity Movement (ISM), which formed after Israel and the United States rejected a proposal by then-United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson to place international human rights monitors in the occupied territories. The ISM defines itself as 'a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land using nonviolent, direct-action methods and principles'. Israel was building a large steel wall to separate Rafah from Egypt, and was bulldozing homes and gardens to create a 'buffer zone'. Corrie and seven other activists responded to a call on that March day to protect the home of the Nasrallah family, which was being threatened with demolition by two of the armored Israeli military bulldozers made by the US company Caterpillar. Cindy Corrie, Rachels mother, related what happened: The bulldozer proceeded toward Rachel... She was in her orange jacket. When it kept coming, she rose on the mound, and the eyewitnesses testified that her head rose above the top of the blade of the bulldozer, so she could clearly be seen, but the bulldozer continued and proceeded over her, and so that it was covering her body. It stopped and then reversed, according to the eyewitness testimonies, without lifting its blade, so backed over her once again. The civil action against the Israeli defence ministry will decide whether damages should be paid for her ...

Have you heard of Rachel Corrie? Rachel Corrie was the peace activist from ISM International Solidarity Movement, who travelled to Gaza in 2003 to protest the treatment of the Palestinian people by the government of Israel. On March 16th 2003, Rachel, along with 6 other ISM members, attempted to stop the demolition of houses which belonged to Palestinian refugees in Rafa refugee camp by IDF members by acting as human shields. She was deliberately ran over and killed by a bulldozer driven by an Israeli soldier. She was 23 years old at the time of her death.
