For the third successive year, the Railway Budget for 2011-12 spared the passengers of any increase in fares and proposed no hike in freight rates while introducing 56 new trains, including nine non-stop Duronto trains and three Shatabdis. ( Watch: Mamata Banerjee presents Railway Budget ) Regretting the two incidents of sabotage that led to a large number of deaths last year, Mamata said to avoid such incidents in future, anti-collision devices will be commissioned in three more divisions and all unmanned crossings will be done away with in the next fiscal. Mamata, however, said rail accident rate has declined from 0.29 per cent last year to 0.17 per cent at present. The states with lowest number of rail accidents will get two new projects and two new trains as an incentive, she said. The booking charges for A/C as well as non A/C seats have been slashed by 50 per cent and online ticketing is all set to get cheaper.

Luckily we chanced upon I 2 Inn, a lovely guesthouse above a hairdressers with super helpful staff. Once checked in we took the monorail down to the train station to buy our tickets to Butterworth. From the station we followed the guidebook's walking tour around KL's stunning colonial district and grubby Chinatown. The rain started as we made our way back to the guesthouse for a rest an didn't let up all evening, we watched the lightning out of the window for a while before venturing out in search of food. We eventually settled into a restaurant to sample some traditional Malaysian 'Baba Nyonya' food. Nathan had Mee Mamak (peanutty-curry noodles with unannounced tofu) and I had Otak Otak (fish grilled in a banana leaf). They were both gross. After another lazy start we headed over to the bus stop in Chinatown, admiring terrapins and trinkets in the central market along the way. "High-speed rail is the backbone of a modern economy. Investing in high-speed rail infrastructure is a pre-requisite for the United States to compete with the rest of the developed world's economies," said Senator Sandoval, Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. Illinois has delivered on railroad infrastructure funding by authorizing $850 million in our capital budget. We have spent more on Amtrak service than any other state in the Union besides California, and in tough budget times, Illinois is keeping the Amtrak program running strong by upgrading the freight line between St. Louis and Joliet. Senator Sandoval introduced two measures this year to keep Illinois on the path for bringing high-speed rail to Illinois. Senate Bill 1381 will use the Fuel Tax Fund to create a Grade Crossing Separation Fund. This will improve road and railway safety while developing the capacity for Illinois to move forward on high-speed rail construction. Senate Bill 1904 will give the Toll Highway Authority the ability to lay railroad tracks and control access. This will put Illinois in the position to effectively run a high-speed rail line. I'm starting off a new project to build a model Railway, This is footage of the first running of the trains straight from the boxes, and things are looking good, I am very pleased with the general look and finish to the models and they run very well even at slow speeds, so the 5 pole motors give a good performance even with a basic analogue control. I hope to expand the layout this year (2011) and add some buildings and scenery, so this is just a very basic start to the hobby. The trains are now back in the box's waiting for the next stage of the project. I know nothing about real trains, but I am learning a little as I go. I always think a model railway looks fascinating, a world in miniature. But don't expect to see total period accuracy and attention to detail, this is just for modelling pleasure and I will being looking run anything from 1930 to 1960 so quite a broad time period. Hornby is still possibly one of the very best toy and model ranges available anywhere in the world. Regarding Hornby it has it is a brand name I feel we as model enthusiasts can trust and I am very pleased to see the good stewardship of Corgi and Airfix, and Scalextric under their management. Another good point is the development of the "Railroad" range this is wonderful news for every modeller on a budget, and so everyone can enjoy the hobby regardless of their budget. Most of the marchers were peaceful, but a small number of violent protesters threw Molotov cocktails that burned two cars outside the upscale King George Palace hotel, which sits on one corner of the square. Police responded with stun grenades and tear gas, and the entire exchange left the square filled with smoke and an acrid smell. The violent protesters left a trail of burning waste bins and lots of garbage and debris that they had thrown at police. At least one small fire burned briefly about a block away from the square. After the marchers moved through, however, the tension was mostly over. Police still formed a line around the front of Parliament, but there was no traffic and only small groups of people milled around the square. Wednesday is the climax of a week full of strikes by the country's unions against changes in labor laws and the introduction of wage cuts. Derailed: no power for new carriages Linton Besser March 10, 2009 THE CityRail network has insufficient electric power to run the biggest order of new trains in Australia and has been forced to spend more than $1 billion to fix the problem and to pay for other essential upgrades. The first of more than 600 rail carriages due to begin testing in October will be restricted to one section of the rail network until a program of capital improvements is completed, some of which are running years late and over budget. Although RailCorp was aware more power was needed for the trains, the budget for the overhaul has blown out almost seven-fold. If too many of the trains are put into circulation at once, sections of the network will short-circuit, sources have confirmed. In a tender last year the State Government revealed "RailCorp does not currently have an enterprise-wide change strategy for achieving business readiness to accept [public-private partnership] implementation, and this represents a major risk". A July 2006 RailCorp investigation report revealed the power "capacity of the existing network is predicted to be exceeded in 2008". The organisation's three-year internal audit document identifies "inadequate power to run trains" as a medium level risk. Budget papers show the power upgrade should have finished this year at a cost of $125 million, but that has been pushed to 2012 after the program hit internal difficulties and its director was replaced 18 months ago.
