Amy Goodman visits Google's Mountain View office to present her book "Breaking the Sound Barrier". This event took place on April 30, 2010, as part of the Authors@Google series. Amy Goodman breaks through the corporate medias lies, sound-bites, and silence in this wide-ranging new collection of articles. In place of the usual suspects, the experts who, in Goodmans words, know so little about so much, explain the world to us, and get it so wrong," this accessible, lively collection allows the voices the corporate media exclude and ignore to be heard loud and clear. From community organizers in New Orleans, to the courageous American soldiers who've said "No" to Washington's wars, to the victims of torture and police violence, we are given the extraordinary opportunity to hear ordinary people standing up and speaking out. As Willie Nelson says, "There is no one who should be more on the mainstream media, every day reminding us and giving us a glimpse of the power of one." Written with all of the fierce intelligence and passion for truth that millions have come to expect from Amy Goodmans reportage, Breaking the Sound Barrier is, in Arianna Huffington's words, "crusading journalism at its best." and, here's an example: www.youtube.com
President Obama delivers the eulogy at a memorial service for Dr. Dorothy Height, saying that the inspirational civil rights leader who died last week at the age of 98 deserves a place of honor in Americas memory. April 29, 2010.
On April 14, Charles Roland "Buddy" Hughes Jr. died from complications of Hodgkin's disease at DeKalb Medical Center. He was 81. A memorial service will be held 4 pm Sunday at Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur. Mr. Hughes was fresh out of the Army when he met his future wife, Anne Fishwick. The Roanoke natives married two weeks after she graduated from Randolph Macon Woman's College near Lynchburg, Va. In 1955, Mr. Hughes graduated from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. He served churches in Danville, Va., and Lynchburg before he and his wife became missionaries for the Presbyterian Church. Starting in 1963, the couple spent nearly six years in Minas Gerais, a state in southern Brazil. Then they returned to the US so Mr. Hughes could serve as a liaison to Latin America for Presbyterian Church (USA), which was based in Nashville at the time. Five years later, they again relocated internationally to Mexico City, where he helped establish a library for that city's ecumenical and theological community. In 1975, Mr. Hughes became the chaplain at Arkansas College, now Lyon College, in Batesville, Ark. Nearly two decades later, the couple traveled to Nicaragua to serve as one-year volunteers for Witness for Peace, an activist organization. They stayed four additional years, at the request of the Presbyterian Church, to assist with community development. "Buddy's concerns ranged far and wide," said the Rev. W. Mark Koenig, coordinator of the Kentucky-based ...

By Christophe Nayel aka D-XRISTO. This spacious park is named for St. Nicholas of Myra. It is located at the intersection of St. Nicholas Avenue, 127th Street, St. Nicholas Terrace and 141st Street, bordering the Manhattan neighborhoods of Hamilton Heights, Manhattanville, and Harlem. Originally settled by Dutch farmers in the late 1600s, after the American Revolution (1775-1783) the neighborhoods agricultural yield began to wane. Many residents moved to southern Manhattans newly industrialized areas. In the 1880s, the area developed quickly as the elevated trains and tenement houses were constructed in Harlem, Hamilton Heights and Manhattanville. The City acquired some of the land for St. Nicholas Park by condemnation for the construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct in 1885-86. New York State laws of 1894 and 1895 authorized the creation of a public park instead, and it was called St. Nicholas Park. The name for the park was taken from the adjacent Harlem streets, St. Nicholas Terrace (to the west) and St. Nicholas Avenue (to the east). These streets honor New Amsterdams patron saint, whose image adorned the masthead of the New Netherland that brought the first Dutch colonists to these shores. St. Nicholas of Myra is also known as the patron saint of children, sailors, bankers, pawnbrokers, travelers, and captives--as well as the inspiration for Father Christmas or Santa Claus. Legend claims that he gave his considerable inheritance to charity and often made secret and ...
