A gem.. recorded in 1965 when Shankar was in his prime...come to think of it he is still mesmerising us with his play
A veritable gem..with virtuoso tabla of Chatur Lal recorded in 1965 when Shankar was in his prime.. meandering melody that reconditions your soul inculcating in it a certain sense of levitation.. imbued with divinity..a kind of mantra..a dialogue with God...elevates you to Nirvana ..leads you to Valhalla and firmly deposits you there ... sempiternally...tabla solo in the middle ( 5:51 to 8:44) by Chatur Lal is simply mesmerizing! And 8:44 to 10-45 is probably one of the best and perfect sitar/tabla rapport ( jugalbandi) of all time! Don't miss 5:22 to 6:35 sitar engages in a dialogue with tabla then fades gracefully to make way for tabla solo....if there ever was a magical music tour this is it....Ravi Shankar and Chatur Lal transport you to a world where music is redefined.....transforming every single note into a source of wonderment and bewilderment....

Come the black clouds... and separation from the beloved become unbearable. Each bolt of lightning hits straight at the heart and makes it beat faster. Kajri, the songs of longing are the outbursts of a woman overwhelmed by desire. Derived from the word Kajal meaning Kohl, Kajris are sung by classical and semi classical musicians. There are two forms of Kajri singing in UP, one that is sung on a performance platform and the other sung by women dancing in a semi-circle, the 'Dhunmuniya Kajri'. Singers: Girija Devi (b. May 8, 1929, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India) is an Indian singer and represents the Banaras Gharana of singers. She is adept at different genres of Hindustani vocal music including Khyal, Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti and Kajari, but she excels in the Poorab ang Thumri. She has been described as the last living queen of thumri. Her father Ramdeo Rai was a local Zaminadar and interested in classical Indian music. He initiated his daughter's musical training when she was five years old. Her gurus were Pandit Sarju Prasad Mishra and Shrichand Mishra. Indian classical music meets European jazz with Deobrat Mishra, sitar & vocals, Mangala Prasad Mishra, tabla, David Laborier, guitar, Jeff Herr, drums and Damien Prud'homme, saxophone & flute. Deobrat Mishra from "Music of Benares" is the son and student of great Pandit Shivnath Mishra, Lecturer and Head of the Music Department at the Sanskrit University of Benares. Deobrat Mishra was honoured as India's best sitar players award of the year 1995. In the year 2000 he received SurMani ( Jewels of sound) award in Mumbay - India. Mangala Prasad Mishra is the son of Pandit Kumar Lal Mishra, a known tabla artist who accompanied other famous sitar players like Pandit Ravi Shankar. David Laborier, Jeff Herr and Damien Prud'homme are three outstanding jazz musicians known for their enormous feeling all over the European jazz scene. The feeling and the improvisation are the leading parts as well in Indian classical music than in European jazz. The vocal basis is characteristic of Indian classical music, the instrument music following the example of the human voice. This meditational music lives from improvisation, nethertheless rising to a peak of excitement and tension. Using here the voice, the sitar & the tabla, the guitar, the saxophone and the drums these 5 musicans evoke a mood of rapt attention which quickly casts its spell over the whole audience.
