It's not often we see Richard MacManus of ReadWriteWeb at Silicon Valley events, so when we spotted him at the Web 2.0 Summit we had to snag him for a quick interview before his flight back to New Zealand. ReadWriteWeb has been around for an eternity in blog years, since 2003, and continues to grow and evolve with new sections like Jobwire, which showcases new hires in the area - a very nice change of pace from the layoff trackers. Check out our interview below as Richard tells us more about whats new for them and his thoughts on some of the more interesting topics at the show.

Semantic Web startup AdaptiveBlue on Tuesday is launching a new service, called Glue, that connects people around everyday things, including books, movies and music through a wide range of Web sites, including Amazon, Last.fm, Netflix, Yahoo! Finance, Wine.com and Citysearch. "We forget that the Web has no concept of a book or a movie," says Brad Burnham, co-founder of Union Square Ventures, which led AdaptiveBlue's $1.5 million Series A in 2007. "When we get together with our friends, we don't talk about URLs, we talk about things--about books, movies, wine, etc.," adds Burnham. "With this release, AdaptiveBlue is making it possible for people to come together around the things that mean something to them, not just the pages they visit." Along with the new product, AdaptiveBlue is announcing details of its recent $4.5 million Series B, which closed at the end of August and had been reported by some blogs earlier this month. AdaptiveBlue founder and CEO Alex Iskold (pictured) tells Tech Confidential that the round was led by RRE Ventures, with participation from Union Square. "Our investment in AdaptiveBlue is a reflection of our confidence in Alex, his outstanding team and in their collective ability to deliver what we think will be one of the first truly useful semantic tools for the Web," says Jim Robinson, who co-founded RRE in 1994 with Stuart Ellman. Robinson has joined AdaptiveBlue's board of directors. AdaptiveBlue conforms with other investments RRE has made under the theme of "filtering technologies," including SkyGrid Inc. and Storm Exchange Inc. "Investing in AdaptiveBlue is in keeping with our belief that ever-spiralling data sources require better tools," Robinson says. "Semantic technology is a big part of that." Iskold, 36, is an experienced entrepreneur, having sold his first company, Information Laboratory, to IBM Corp. [IBM] for an undisclosed amount in 2003. He is also a prolific writer, with a blog and frequent contributions to ReadWriteWeb on topics ranging from ...

http://www.beet.tv/2008/09/power-bloggers.html GigaOM, VentureBeat and ReadWriteWeb will be part of expanded technology coverage at the NYTimes.com, the paper announced today. The announcement is part of a redesign of business pages along with a major increase in coverage in a number of sectors including "green" tech and economic issues. The redesigned page goes live today. Yesterday I interviewed Vindu Goel, deputy technology editor at The Times about the expanded coverage including the arrangement with the power bloggers and the hiring of new staff reporters. He said that the content from the blogs will start to surface on the paper's pages in October. He said that the blogs will send a feed of selected posts, five of which will be posted at a time. The posts will reside on The Times and will have button back to the blog's home page. This development is similar to the Washington Post's syndication deal with paidContent and TechCrunch. Both blogs have a prominent location on the paper's tech page. Last night I reached Matt Marshall, the editor and CEO of VentureBeat. He sent me this statement. "The deal with the Times is just great for VentureBeat. Its an endorsement of something weve been working hard to achieve, which is to publish content that is credible, edited, engaging and informative. It brings us potentially millions of more readers, and brings the companies we write about tons of more exposure." Here's what Richard MacManus of RWW told us. "This is great news for us, because it brings our brand of web technology news, reviews and analysis to a much wider audience. It also means that the innovative and often little known startups we write about daily get a chance to be seen in a mainstream publication. The New York Times has a reputation for quality and in-depth journalism, attributes that we strive for on ReadWriteWeb - so we're excited about this partnership. This is also further vindication that blogs are increasingly being accepted as mainstream news ...

Friday, July 11, 2008 News Flash: The Guardian News & Media has Purchased paidContent Wow, exciting news for our good friend Rafat Ali who has reportedly agreed to sell paidContent to Britain's Guardian Media Group for $30 million. The Guardian's Jemima Kiss just published the news of the acquisition and here is her "thought piece." However, terms have not been disclosed and the company declined to provide them to Beet.TV. Rafat posts the news himself, also does not reveal terms. First news of the deal broke a few hours ago in a report by Kara Swisher. Soon after, that eagle-eyed, prolific tweeter Marshall Kirkpatrick at ReadWriteWeb wrote he confirmed the news via a tweet from a Guardian editor! Kara reported that the deal is worth $30 million. This would be in line with some recent sales by small blog/events companies including Mediabistro which sold to Jupiter for around $25 million and ArsTechnica which sold to Conde Nast for around the same price. Here's a link to Compete which compares web traffic among these three properties. We understand that a big area for revenue for paidContent is its emerging conference business. Above is an interview I did one year ago, Rafat told me about expansions and his views on a prospects of a sale. He told me then, "we'll probably exit at some point in time." The parent company of paidContent is ContentNext. paidContent VC Funding and Sale: It's a Family Affair paidContent recieved venture funding from Greycroft Partners, the firm headed by Alan Patricof. The company has been sold by Mesa, the new boutique investment bank headed by his son Mark Paticof. Mark also sold ArsTechnica to CondeNast. Just yesterday, Mesa sold Menupages to New York magazine. I've republished below my interview with Alan. He speaks about Rafat and the prospects for vertical publishing. Must be a big party day with the Patricof family! Congrats. -- Andy Plesser http://www.beet.tv/2008/07/news-flash-the.html

Netvibes Readies Video Widgets for CBS in Rev Share Pact, Beet.TV Has Learned Video widgets are not new, but the monetization scheme surrounding this technology is still being sorted out. Last month, Google announced a new widget that will work with video. One big development will occur later this months when Netvibes introduces video widgets with advertising for episodes of CBS, Beet.TV has learned. I was delighted to meet Netvibes founder Tariq Krim, 34, last week on the MIT campus where he was being honored as one of the Technology Review's most influential young innovators. Tariq, who splits his time between Paris and San Francisco, gave a great overview of widgets and various monetization opportunities and spoke briefly about the deal with CBS which is a revenue share agreement. Details or of the images of the CBS widgets are not yet available. Just last week, Netvibes announced universal API's for widgets. To get a perspective on the utility of video widgets, I've asked Marshall Kirkpatrick, who really knows this area. Marshall is newest bloggers over at Read/WriteWeb. Here's what he told me earlier today: "Widgets are one of the best "publish and subscribe" ways to deliver video by RSS and it's only a matter of time until publishers everywhere find out about them. Widgets on media sites will include ads with a revenue split and corporate sites will pay a licensing fee for the widgets - I don't think the methods are in question, just whether the supply and demand will be timed right. These startup page companies have such a slow burn rate that it should work out just fine in the long run; I think it's just distribution channels they need and I think those will come. I don't think this newest Universes launch is going to work, but I think Netvibes in general is strong." Keep an eye on those widgets. You can grab the embed code of this video right here. -- Andy Plesser Posted on Wednesday, October 03, 2007
