A nine-time Silver Slugger, and one of twenty-four people to have hit over 500 career home runs, he is well recognized for his strong offensive abilities. In 2004, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the World Series after helping the Boston Red Sox win their first World Series championship, over the St. Louis Cardinals, in over 86 years. The New York Yankees are a professional baseball team based in the borough of the Bronx, in New York City, New York and are a member of Major League Baseball's American League East Division. One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, and moved to New York City in 1903, becoming known as the New York Highlanders before being officially renamed the "Yankees" in 1913. From 1923 to 2008, the Yankees' home ballpark was Yankee Stadium, one of the world's most famous sports venues. In 2009, they moved into a new stadium, also called "Yankee Stadium". The franchise is the defending World Champion of Major League Baseball and lead the League in both revenue and titles, with 27 World Series championships and 40 American League Pennants. They have more championships than any other franchise in North American professional sports history, passing the 24 Stanley Cup championships by the Montreal Canadiens in 1999. Throughout the team's history, the franchise has produced some of the most celebrated players in Major League history, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra. The franchise has seen 44 of its players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Yankees have retired the numbers of 16 of its players. May 1, 1995 www.amazon.com Watch the full program: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Miller fell short of selection to the Baseball Hall of Fame in both 2003 and 2007, although he finished among the leading candidates in voting for executives with 63%. (Election requires 75% of the vote.) The 2003 and 2007 votes had been conducted among a committee of all living Hall of Famers, who are primarily players. After they failed to agree on any candidate, including Miller, the voting body was reduced to 12 members, ten of them non-playing. CNNMoney writer Chris Isidore described the switch's effect on Miller's candidacy: "Imagine a runner rounding third and heading for home, only to have a last minute rule change move the location of the plate. That's roughly what happened to Marvin Miller's chances of getting his long overdue recognition in baseball's Hall of Fame." Miller was up for election again in 2007 under a revamped voting format, but received only 3 of the necessary 9 votes. Referring to the 12-man voting board, Jim Bouton said, "How did these people vote, and why are their votes kept secret? And why aren't there more players on that committee? Hank Aaron, Jim Bunning, Bob Gibson, Fergie Jenkins—they're all on the committee for reviewing the managers and umpires. Essentially, the decision for putting a union leader in the Hall of Fame was handed over to a bunch of executives and former executives. Marvin Miller kicked their butts and took power away from the baseball ...
"The Best" is a song written by Mike Chapman and Holly Knight, originally included on Bonnie Tyler's 1988 release Hide Your Heart, in reference to Tom Mason. The song was then recorded and released as a highly successful single by Tina Turner in 1989 on her hit album Foreign Affair. The saxophone solo on Turner's version is played by Edgar Winter. Holly Knight told Songfacts: "'Simply The Best' is one of those rare gems that's a positive song, and it's not cheesy. But the hard part is to write something in a positive mode that really is sincere - that's a tall order." "The Best" is one of Turner's most successful and popular singles worldwide. It peaked at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and made it to the top five in the UK, peaking at number 5 and Germany, reaching number 4. Certain editions of Turner's single also included the non-album track "Bold and Reckless", produced by Rupert Hine. A version recorded in 1992 as a duet with Jimmy Barnes, titled "Simply the Best", was a Top 40 hit single in Australia, where it was used in a campaign for the New South Wales Rugby League. "The Best" became even more popular in the UK than in the US, becoming the theme song of the legendary British world champion boxer Chris Eubank. It also became the theme song for the also legendary Brazilian Formula One racer Ayrton Senna. The song was used during the ceremonies that the Pittsburgh Penguins held as they retired, un-retired, and re-retired number 66 for Mario Lemieux, as his ...

Roy Collins & the Saturday Morning Sports gang recently had the great opportunity to sit down with Ferguson "Fergie" Arthur Jenkins just a few days after the Cubs retired jersey number 31 in honor of both Jenkins and Greg Maddux on May 3, 2009. Fergie was a three-time All-Star, winner of the 1971 Cy Young Award, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in 1991. Jenkins spent the majority of his career playing for the Chicago Cubs but he also had stints with the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Boston Red Sox. An outstanding all-around athlete, Fergie played basketball as a member of the Harlem Globetrotters. In 1962, he was signed by the Phillies but didnt make his major-league debut until he was 22, in 1965, as a relief pitcher. He was traded the following year to the Chicago Cubs where he would become one of the best pitchers in the majors. In his first full year as a starter for the Cubs (1967), Jenkins recorded twenty wins while posting a 2.80 ERA and 236 strikeouts. He finished tied for second in the Cy Young Award voting, following Mike McCormick of the San Francisco Giants. He was also selected for the All-Star Game for the first time that season. The following year he won twenty games, his ERA dropped to 2.63 and his strikeout total increased to 260. Jenkins established a reputation for achieving his pitching feats and his statistics while spending most of his career pitching in a "hitter's ballpark"--Wrigley Field in ...
place votes. Jenkins also posted a .478 slugging percentage, hitting six home runs and driving in twenty runs in just 115 at-bats. On April 6, 1971, Jenkins started the Cubs' opening-day game. The Cubs defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 in 10 innings at Wrigley Field. Jenkins pitched a complete game for the Cubs, and Billy Williams hit a home run in the final inning for the victory. On September 1, 1971, Jenkins threw another complete game against the Montreal Expos and had two home runs. ...
his roots and representing his country during a lifetime in the game, Jenkins established a reputation as one of the greatest pitchers of not only his era (between 1965 and 1983) but of all time. A strikeout king who whiffed more than 3000 batters, Jenkins earned the trust of his managers as a pitcher who completed what he started. This is the story of a man who refused to be leveled by sadness and disappointments away from the playing field. It is also the story of behind-the-scenes good ...

www.clmnews.com The Brett Favre story got even stranger today. In a late developing twist the Green Bay Packers have reportedly offered their jilted QB $20 to stay retired. The news comes less than 48 hours after Brett Favre signed and faxed his reinstatement letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Gödel. Godel delayed reinstating Favre in order to allow the two sides to reach a mutal conclusion. But with all encumbrances removed and Favre set to arrive at Packers Camp on Friday, Green Bay has taken a leap in offering Favre $20M to stay retired. That sum is nearly double what the QB is set to make this season. Favre has long maintained that his return isn't motivated by money, but rather a true love of the game, so it would be an even bigger flip flop if Brett were to accept the money. Taking that into consideration Green Bay has made other contingencies. Among them is a willingness to now trade Favre within the Division. The latest deal involves the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers have proposed a trade that would fetch them RB Chester Taylor, and a 3rd round pick from the Vikes in exchange for Favre. It's likely that the Packers would have to lower their asking price to get that deal done especially now that Favre has vetoed any trades involving the NY Jets or Miami Dolphins. Favre's short list includes either the Vikings or Tampa Bay Bucs. Although the Favre to the Minnesota trade is a seemingly perfect fit, Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress has reiterated his belief that 3rd ...
