www.mahalo.com On July 27, 2010, Newsweek reported that musician Wyclef Jean is considering running for President of Haiti later this fall. Jean has been one of the more active proponents of fundraising and humanitarian efforts in his home country, particularly following the January 2010 earthquake that devastated the island nation. In 2005, Jean established the Yele Haiti Foundation, to provide scholarships for children affected by Hurricane Jeanne. The Smoking Gun had reported early this year about concerns over how the charity "has spent money in the past... including $100000 for a performance by Jean at a 2006 benefit concert." The current president of Haiti, Rene Preval, cannot seek re-election to the position when the country heads to the polls on November 28. Preval appointed Jean to the post of ambassador-at-large in 2007. Jean was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, just outside of Port-au-Prince, but he grew up in Brooklyn. The family for the former Fugees star released a statement on July 27 stating, "Wyclef's commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless, and he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward..." The deadline for filing for candidacy is August 7.
