Career Search Respiratory Therapists Respiratory therapists and respiratory therapy technicians—also known as respiratory care practitioners—evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders. Practicing under the direction of a physician, respiratory therapists assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care therapeutic treatments and diagnostic procedures, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians. Respiratory therapy technicians follow specific, well-defined respiratory care procedures under the direction of respiratory therapists and physicians. In clinical practice, many of the daily duties of therapists and technicians overlap. However, therapists generally have greater responsibility than technicians. For example, respiratory therapists consult with physicians and other health care staff to help develop and modify patient care plans. Respiratory therapists also are more likely to provide complex therapy requiring considerable independent judgment, such as caring for patients on life support in intensive-care units of hospitals. In this Handbook statement, the term respiratory therapist includes both respiratory therapists and respiratory therapy technicians. Respiratory therapists evaluate and treat all types of patients, ranging from premature infants whose lungs are not fully developed to elderly people whose lungs are diseased. If you decide to pursue a career in respiratory therapy, you will need to complete an accredited respiratory therapy program. This might entail obtaining a bachelor's degree, although an associate?s degree is much more common. Your education will begin with basic chemistry, anatomy, biology, physiology and mathematics studies. Then you will move on to more advanced and specialized classes such as diagnostic procedures, equipment use and care, patient assessment, and cardiac and pulmonary resuscitation, rehabilitation, and treatment. Most likely, you will study health promotion and disease prevention, medical recordkeeping, and billing as well. In most states, you will have to become licensed after completion of your studies with a test called the CRT (certified respiratory therapist) examination.

Breathe deeply and consider a career in respiratory therapy.
A team representing BMCC's respiratory therapy program recently won the 2007 Sputum Bowl — an academic competition that tests players' knowledge of pulmonary function, pediatrics, neonatology, microbiology, physiology and related areas. Sweetening the victory was the fact that the field was dominated by four-year schools — LIU, SUNY-Stony Brook, and Molloy College. BMCC was one of only two community colleges in the event, which is sponsored by the Southeastern Chapter of the New York State Society for Respiratory Care. To be sure, first-place showings are nothing new for BMCC, which has won five out of the past six years and also in 1987, 1992 and 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006. "The questions were very tough and some touched on areas that our students hadn't yet covered," says team coach, Neil Rodia, an associate professor. "But they weren't fazed. They really hit the books and prepared well." Team member James Wehrman admits to being "incredibly nervous" beforehand. "When it over, I was so overwhelmed that it didn't hit me for at least 10 minutes," he says. "Meanwhile, my teammates were jumping out of their chairs." More info: www.bmcc.cuny.edu
