Click videoliners.com to see interview with Katie Marton about his husband Holbrooke Holbrooke was omnivorous in his associations, his reading and his appreciation of life. His friends all had "Holbrooke stories" about his excesses, his vanities, his jealousies and his enormous capacity to keep their friendship and, just as important, his own sense of humor. Whatever else he was -- and he was a writer, diplomat, editor, banker, publisher and impresario of numerous organizations -- he was a deeply serious man engaged always in the serious business of saving lives -- in Vietnam, in Afghanistan, in Bosnia.

US Special Representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke was in Pakistan at a crucial juncture, when the regional situation is changing fast, and the allied forces are in search of a safe exit from Afghanistan. On January 22, 2009, Washington appointed Richard Charles Albert Holbrooke as a special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan. A tough task for the Holbrook. The US trouble shooter Richard Holbrook has been credited for his role in bringing an end to the Bosnian civil war, and has been assistant secretary of state twice. But the present assignment might be his toughest yet. Since his appointment violence and terrorism in the region has been on the rise. The Special Envoy wants long-term relations between Washington and Islamabad and sustainable economic development in Pakistan. The US's new extra security screening has come as a new threat for the innocent travellers to the US. But Holbrooke says it's not discriminatory or Pakistan specific. Although analysts believe America's troop surge in Afghanistan is likely to afffect Pakistan adversely, the US is determined to stay the course. Experts also say President Obama's surge-and-exit Afghan strategy tried to please both left the and right in the US, but a military solution is not the answer. Official sources say Holbrooke is in Pakistan for pre-London conference meetings. A political solution can be found, however, by bringing together all the players in the region, as is going to happen in the upcoming ...

Akhundzadeh refutes Clintons remarks about a brief US-Iran meeting - Akhundzadeh refutes Clintons remarks about a brief US-Iran meeting Mohammad Mehdi Akhundzadeh, the head of Irans delegation to The Hague conference on the future of Afghanistan, yesterday denied US Secretary of State Hilary Clintons remark that a meeting took place between him and the US representative to the conference. On the sidelines of the conference in The Hague on Tuesday, Clinton told reporters that during that days conference, Richard Holbrook, US special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, had a brief but cordial meeting with the head of the Iranian delegation. But Akhundzadeh told Irans official IRNA news agency: Before arriving in The Hague we announced that our attendance is for the purpose of discussing Afghanistan; and that it is neither on our agenda, nor do we have any plans for holding talks with the American officials. He added: We are not playing hide-and-go-seek. Our policy is clear and explicit Be certain that if the Islamic Republic were to speak to, or hold talks with the Americans, everyone would know about it, just as they did in the case of talks held on Iraq, and there is nothing to hide. A former NATO officer claims US Special Forces have conducted secret raids inside Pakistan's border regions. The operations were conducted between 2003 and 2008, but only one was ever made public. According to reports, troops were looking for high value targets among both the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. The one that became widely known in September 2008 was condemned as a provocation by the Pakistani government. Ethnic groups from Pakistans Belugistan province where most of the raids occurred blame the government in Islamabad for allowing these things to happen, said RT LIVE investigative journalist Webster Tarpley. He pointed out that President Obamas West point speech of December 2 is a thinly veiled declaration of war against Pakistan in the sense that it announces the intent of the US to promote the dismemberment, the partition of Pakistan along ethnic lines and in order to do that you have to create trouble on the ground. Ambassador Richard Holbrook, who is the US tsar for the region, was asked Do you have troops in Pakistan? and he said The US has intelligence personnel in Pakistan but not troops. And I would ask What about the contractors, Mr Ambassador? asked Tarpley. Webster Tarpley disclosed information published in The Nation and Vanity Fair magazines about Blackwater Select and Total Intelligence Solutions having massive snatch and grab and even assassination operations run out of Karachi, Pakistans largest city, under the command of the US Joint Special Operations ...
