Reupload after Youtube wrecked the original upload when they recompressed the older file. 1990 performance of Rickover's Dream at the Bottom Line. I left in some of the pre-performance tuning, which is always a head-trip to watch him do by ear in real time. Too many distant camera shots making the technical wizardry harder to discern, but good overall. Tuning: C2G2D3G3B3C4. See www.nomadland.com for information on Hedges and a fund for his children.
new varsity, early eighties.
I was in Lake Tahoe with Michael and Mindy. 9:00 am Michael knocks at our hotel room, apologizing for the early wake-up, but he's just finished this tune and he wants us to hear it. Here is "Rickover's Dream," performed in the courtyard of the New Varsity Theater, June 20, 1984.
First song RNA played is called Space

I had another title in mind, tell me if you can guess what it was. Rick let us all crash at his house for the 678 meet-up in Minnesota. I can honestly say that this was one of the best weekends I have spent in FOREVER! And I hope that Rick can forgive me...

My interpretation of Michael Hedges' song "Rickover's Dream." This is one of my favorite Hedges compositions, particularly because of how open the meter is throughout the piece. I actually did use a few videos to reference how this one was played, but I use less slap harmonics because frankly, I'm not very good at them. The guitar is a Takamine AN10. The sound isn't great, but that's likely because (a) I'm just using the internal mic on the laptop with no audio interface and (b) my playing is a bit sloppy here.

Rehearsal - part of it, anyway
My rendition of Michael Hedges' Rickover's Dream. The harmonics weren't perfect, but I'm too lazy to perfect it in video.
These songs were recorded after one of my bands played for a party, in the woods, somewhere in Ohio. Despite less than perfect production quality (although I do like the crickets chirping in the background) I'm pretty happy with the performance. I don't often get to play instrumentals through a big pa system and I'd just had my guitar re-fretted so it all came together. First song is "Sofa" by Frank Zappa, second is "Rickover's Dream" by Michael Hedges. Sofa notes: I saw the tuning along with the first few chords in a Michael Hedges interview (see below) and sort of took it from there. Some of the slap harmonics, like on the intro, I made up. I guess I could do an instructional vid some time if there is enough interest. the tuning low to high - DGDEAC# opening chords (strings low to high) - XX 0 5 0 5 XX 0 3 0 3 XX 0 2 0 1 XX 0 5 0 5 0 X 0 5 0 5 0 7 (and 5th fret harmonics on remaining strings) XX 0 5 5 5 XX 0 7 7 6 XX 0 10 9 8 12th fret harmonics 7 X (and 7th fret harmonic on remaining strings)

OK, the best I could do! Again, nylon string, which likely qualifies me for therapy to do this song. Especially the fingering gets hard with the broad neck and the strings don't ring like the steel string (hitting them hard helps some, but leads to a lot of distortion that you hear). I tried to play with the sound and give it an "underwater" quality. Hedges called it a "submarine fantasy" invoking Nemo. It was HARD to find submarine footage. Most military, which Michael likely wouldn't go for as I think his idea was exploratory not warfare oriented. But, again, the best with limited time. Hope some enjoy.

This is not me trying to show off, I just decided that this is the best site to host videos on. It's more for me to show my friends and stuff, but I figure anyone can view it. I miss Michael Hedges (never had a chance to meet him) and I realized recently that I don't really know anything about him. So I came to youtube trying to look at his technique rather than just hearing his songs. Quite a bit better than tab, I was just watching Michael (and other talented dudes covering his songs) play the song. Anyway, after a three year period in which I barely played at all for lack of a good guitar, I am throwing myself back into it. I'll try to post lots of vids, this being my first one. Not hitting quite all the notes. Will try again in a day or two. Also, the recording cut off before I was able to finish off the song. Also has bad sound. I really wish the recording were at least able to finish but I may just need a bigger card, or how about a more dedicated camera for this kind of thing and a good mic... good luck getting me to do that in a timely manner, though... there's this other guitar I want... Hopefully it doesn't hurt your ears.
This song single-handedly got me playing guitar again in '87. I never saw Michael live during his lifetime, which made learning it, by ear, all the more challenging. 1997 performance of this submarine fantasy guitar composition, less than a month before he died. I left in the absurdly long tuning and commentary on the tuning.
