Album: Powerslave Rime Of The Ancient Mariner lyrics: Hear the rime of the ancient mariner See his eye as he stops one of three Mesmerises one of the wedding guests Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the sea. And the music plays on, as the bride passes by Caught by his spell and the mariner tells his tale. Driven south to the land of the snow and ice To a place where nobody's been Through the snow fog flies on the albatross Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck it brings. And the ship sails on, back to the North Through the fog and ice and the albatross follows on. The mariner kills the bird of good omen His shipmates cry against what he's done But when the fog clears, they justify him And make themselves a part of the crime. Sailing on and on and north across the sea Sailing on and on and north 'til all is calm. The albatross begins with its vengeance A terrible curse a thirst has begun His shipmates blame bad luck on the mariner About his neck, the dead bird is hung. And the curse goes on and on at sea And the thirst goes on and on for them and me. "Day after day, day after day, we stuck nor breath nor motion as idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean Water, water everywhere and all the boards did shrink Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink." There calls the mariner There comes a ship over the line But how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide. See...onward she comes Onward she nears out of the sun See, she has no crew She has no life, wait but there's two. Death and she Life in Death, They throw their dice for the crew She wins the mariner and he belongs to her now. Then...crew one by one they drop down dead, two hundred men She...she, Life in Death. She lets him live, her chosen one. "One after one by the star dogged moon, too quick for groan or sigh each turned his face with a ghastly pang and cursed me with his eye four times fifty living men (and I heard nor sigh nor groan) with heavy thump, a lifeless lump, they dropped down one by one." The curse it lives on in their eyes The mariner he wished he'd die Along with the sea creatures But they lived on, so did he. And by the light of the moon He prays for their beauty not doom With heart he blesses them God's creatures all of them too. Then the spell starts to break The albatross falls from his neck Sinks down like lead into the sea Then down in falls comes the rain. Hear the groans of the long dead seamen See them stir and they start to rise Bodies lifted by good spirits None of them spake and they're lifeless in their eyes And revenge is still sought, penance starts again Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on. Now the curse is finally lifted And the mariner sights his home spirits go from the long dead bodies Form their own light and the mariner's left alone. And then a boat came sailing towards him It was a joy he could not believe The pilot's boat, his son and the hermit, Penance of life will fall onto him. And the ship it sinks like lead into the sea And the hermit shrieves the mariner of his sins. The mariner's bound to tell of his story To tell this tale wherever he goes To teach God's word by his own example That we must love all things that God made. And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man And the tale goes on and on and on.

This is a Arklay Richards D5 industrial wind vane used with a Richards C5 anemometer on the summit of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. You can see the heavy rime ice on the wind vane and it is still working great.
http://www.RomanticAsheville.com travel guide shows you the panoramic views from the new observation deck that opened atop Mount Mitchell in early 2009. Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. Filmed on a windy, frigid winter day with temperatures around zero. Recent snows and a coat of rime ice on the trees add an otherworldly touch to the scenery. See the Mt. Mitchell Guide http://www.romanticasheville.com/mtmitchell.htm.
http://www.RomanticAsheville.com Travel Guide takes a beautiful, snowy hike on the Appalachian Trail at Roan Mountain, on the Tennessee / North Carolina state line. Famous for its spectacular natural gardens of Catawba rhododendrons, Roan Mountain shelters a rich diversity of life, from spruce-fir forests to vast grassy balds. Rime ice and recent snows in January 2009 make a magical hike. See photos from the hike at http://www.romanticasheville.com/roan_winter_snow_photos.htm.

Hitting Ball butte w/ Yon. Hoping to find SOME soft snow but more rime/ice than anything. Then to add insult to the skiing the sled had issues on the way back. Finished hiking out the last bit in the dark.
A beauty day, 1.9.09, for dawn patrol on the cone @ Mt. Bachelor. To bad everything is covered by rime/ice. Though I did manage to get in some good turns.
Please watch this video in HD mode. The final day of the spectacular cold spell across south-east England, which saw temperatures remaining below freezing during the daytime and plummeting to -12C overnight. This video shows the scene across the Mole Valley and Box Hill in Surrey, England, with freezing fog turning the landscape white with frost, rime and light snow.
This is an Arklay Richards C5 Heated anemometer running on Mt. Washington in NH. The winds are over 100 miles per hour and -27 degrees without the wind chill. You can see the rime ice on the tower.

Storm Recovery indicates the period following a storm cycle. Though the weather conditions may be not as adverse as during the storm (sometimes it can be bluebird), extensive work is being done to lifts and trails along with avalanche control. Roads and parking lots are also being cleared so be on the lookout for heavy equipment. Depending on the strength and duration of the previous storm cycle this operations mode can be in place for 1-3 days and all lifts are subject to late openings. More exposed and isolated lifts will take longer to open than lower and less isolated lifts. Lifts originating from base areas will be addressed first. Lift work includes removing all rime ice buildup from lift drives, terminals, chairs and towers, prior to being able to test and re-calibrate the lift for proper functionality. Details are available on the conditions page.
This video filmed by Larry Wunsch of Brownsville, Wisconsin who lives inside of Forward Energy wind farm there. He was out plowing his driveway when he saw a piece of ice the size of a bedsheet come from the turbine. He got his video camera and filmed the turbine. Theres no flying ice in this video, but the turbine blades clearly have ice and snow on the blades- except for the one where the big chunk fell off. Residents inside this industrial wind farm in Fond du Lac County were told ice throw from turbine blades isn't a problem. They were told if ice forms on the blades, the turbine automatically shuts down. People who are spending their first winter in the wind farm tell another story.

December 20, 2008 Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin finds and engages the Japanese whaler Yushin Maru No. 2 Saturday, December 20, 2008 Confronting the Yushin Maru No. 2 by Jeff (Quartermaster)Australian Director The pursuit of the elusive Japanese whaling fleet has led Sea Shepherd off the Adelie Coast of Antarctica, deep within the pristine, icy waters of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. A vessel was spotted on the radar at 10:00 hours with a bearing of 330°, traveling at 12.7 knots and a range of 8.9 miles. The crew was put on red alert as we made preparations for possible confrontation with the whaling fleet. The question of which vessel had been discovered was quickly answered, when out of the fog off the Steve Irwin's port side came the kill ship, the Yushin Maru No 2. Only meters separated the two vessels as the crew of the harpoon ship frantically merged toward a huge net structure. Sea Shepherd tactics have apparently resulted in the Japanese whalers modifying their vessels to develop a device to try and repel boarders delivering arrest warrants for the whalers illegal activities. With the Sea Shepherd having right of way, Captain Watson held course as the killer ship headed straight for the Steve Irwin. Only meters separated the two vessels as the Yushin crossed the Irwin's bow, displaying the words Yushin Maru No 2, TOKYO at the stern. The delta boat was in hot pursuit of the killer ship for an attack when the weather turned for the worse with fog, snow, and raging 60 knot winds closing in. The delta was forced to return. The deckhands showed impeccable teamwork and courage as they fought hard against raging winds and spray to get the delta back on deck. The Rudd government's false election promise has forced 48 volunteers from around the globe to put their lives on the line to do the government's job of upholding the Australian Federal court ruling. The Japanese whalers are now on the run which means no whales will be illegally slaughtered in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. At least, not on Sea Shepherd's watch! Running an Icy Gauntlet for the Whales Monday, December 22, 2008 Read special members-only news and information direct from Captain Paul Watson. http://my.seashepherd.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=259&srcid=183 Tuesday, December 23, 2008 Sea Shepherd Struggles to Free Ship from Heavy Ice Conditions The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has lost the trail of the Japanese fleet after encountering heavy ice conditions. We have been struggling to follow the Japanese whaling fleet through heavy weather and extremely difficult ice conditions. "The Japanese whaling fleet fled after contact with the Steve Irwin on December 20th," said Captain Paul Watson. "We caught them in Australian Antarctic Territorial waters. We followed them for three days for three hundred miles until heavy ice blocked our progress. Once we navigate our way out of these conditions we will continue our search." The Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin has fuel and provisions to enable it to continue for another month in pursuit of the Japanese whalers. "This is not an easy job in these conditions," said Laura Dakin of Canberra, Australia, the Chief cook and veteran of past Antarctic campaigns. "We are doing our best with the resources we have and we have them on the run." The Sea Shepherd crew are hopeful they can re-locate the Japanese fleet by Christmas Day. "I can't think of a better way to celebrate Christmas than saving these gentle giants from an agonizing death from Japanese harpoons," said Captain Paul Watson. The Steve Irwin lost contact with the fleet when the ship's helicopter the Kookaburra was unable to fly due to dense fog and frequent snowstorms. And now there came both mist and snow, And it grew wondrous cold: And ice, mast high, came floating by, As green as emerald, And through the drifts, the snowy clifts Did send a dismal sheen: Nor shapes of men nor beasts we ken- The ice was all between - Samuel Taylor Coleridge - The Rime of the Ancient Mariner ----------------------------------------- Sea Shepherd came through mist and snow As all around grew cold As massive icebergs drifted by Cobalt blue and pearl white Probing treacherous deadly rifts For those cold hearted fiends The question is not if but when The ice is not between. - From the Steve Irwin (Dec 23rd, 2008)
This is a Richards C5H headed type anemometer running on the summit of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. Home of the worst weather on earth. This anemometer is running in severe rime ice conditions with 90 mph winds and -55 degrees F with the wind chill!!! This unit was removed after an hour of run time with no damage to the anemometer!!
This footage is of a pole atop the weather observation tower at Mount Washington, NH. The location is known for having the worst weather in the world and one of the elements that makes it that way is rime ice, which is frozen clouds in a way. I wrote an Observer comment about this which can be seen for December 9, 2008 at this website: http://www.mountwashington.org/weather/comments/. We update this daily with what life is like on the summit, so check back often. We also update other parts of our site at http://www.mountwashington.org. The Mount Washington Observatory is a non-profit weather observatory that is member supported. It has been tracking weather for 75+ years and holds the record for highest observed surface wind speed of 231 mph. Hope you enjoy, Ryan Knapp Staff Meteorologist, KMWN

Having made numerous fun visits to the breakwater at Port Austin, Michigan, I decided to package my camera inside a plastic bag and go for the gusto - filming the waves of a 30mph wind from inside the spray (as well as out). It was fun. Although, the spray did manage to soak through my jeans and puddle in my left boot. Occasionally someone else came to view the waves - but no one had as much fun as we did!
Tomorrow we'll go back and see how thick this stuff has gotten. 30 mph winds straight out of the north, 31 degrees temp - perfect for build-up.

Peconic River "Forge" area in Riverhead, with very strong winds and rough water. Note the rime ice along the tree bottoms and steps...it's quite cold. Just the way I like it! :-) Filmed on Saturday, November 22, 2008.
We hiked up to the Chin of Mansfield from the north. It was really cold, there was snow and rime ice in the conifers and on the ground, but the views were still awesome.

My trip to Mount Washington, New Hampshire via the Crawford Path, 5/24/08 Take a walk with me up to Mount Washington via the oldest continually maintained path in the United States. Experience the force of the constant winds there, and amazing rime ice formed on the rocks near the summit. Sorry about the audio quality in this movie. While shooting this, I didn't think my voice would be this drowned out by wind noise. Also, being my first film, I didn't realize that what I saw with my eyes doesn't always translate to what the camera sees. Sorry for the contant, dizzying movement while holding this camera.

From the 1991 album "From Beyond" Lyrics: Winter ice - terminal frost Closing eyes of equinox Dimensional change - darkening skies The sphere is shackled till dusk Prophet dreams - ride the winds As black holes open for devouring Universal chaos in the realm of time Surface of earth - covered in rime From beyond enter the horror Of a dark and hideous nature The fall of man is now at hand Awakened from an ancient slumber The immortal ones return The earth is theirs ones again Stricken, cursed - frozen damnation Man's fall to perpetual domination Time trapped in between stages Frigid return to the chamber of ages
I made up the plot after i finished filming so it does not make a bit of sense Well it takes place in the future where alaska has melted away and uncovered a ancient ruin, where a mechanical god thrives (Rime). Indi. Juan an archeologist explorer travels there for a mythical artifact named the mask of ice. It is suppose to restore the damage caused by Global Warming. sorry for the quality I just used a digital camer

Mistakenly referred to as Hoarfrost by many, this is actually soft rime. The difference is hoarfrost is formed in clear weather from radiation losses into the open skies whereas rime is formed from fog or heavily saturated air/windy conditions.
We were working on the southeast side of Augustine Volcano in Lower Cook Inlet, Alaska, when a tower of rime ice collapsed triggering an avalanche.
Performed live at the Perch Cafe in Brooklyn December 1, 2007. Cardiovascular ice-over I really didn't want to know you I only wanted to get in and get acquainted with your skin As night bleaches to day and here breathless we lay Anima's all exposed Rime deliquesces so Ooh when we shared our perspiration Tried to avoid the conversation I kind of thought it was unwise for our souls to synergize As night bleaches to day and here breathless we lay Anima's all exposed Rime deliquesces so This is not like any one night stand Where you'd be banished from my bed And we'd go our ways When I look into your eyes I see Saturn's rings melting away As night bleaches to day and here breathless we lay Anima's all exposed Rime deliquesces so Ooh wee ohohoh ay Metaphors gone mad here

The Mount Washington observatory in (the northeastern U.S. state of) New Hampshire is a non-profit, scientific and educational institution with a mission to advance understanding of the Earth's climate systems. It also has some of the most extreme weather on the planet. The strongest winds ever recorded, were recorded right here, at the Mt. Washington Weather station in New Hampshire. On 12 April 1934, the station measured a wind gust of more than 371 kilometers per hour. The Mount Washington weather station was the first regular, meteorological observations in the world. It continues to collect climate data, and weather information daily. Three out of every four days a year Mount Washington is hidden in clouds or covered with fog, with hurricane force winds sometimes blowing. Scientists and visitors pass through three distinct ecosystems on the ride to the summit, 1,923 meters above sea level. A team of scientists is stationed here. Stacey Kawecki, 23, is one of the scientists. She points out a phenomenon called "rime ice." There is a lot of it here. Rim ice forms on objects when fog freezes. The observers work one week on the summit then one week off. Every hour their readings go to the U.S. National Weather Service. It uses the data to make nationwide forecasts. When not taking readings or keeping instruments working, the Mount Washington scientists conduct research experiments at the station. Visitors are welcome to help out and for a fee, can spend a week living at the station. On this visit, after a typically frigid night, the weather broke and the occupants awoke to a less typical, clear and beautiful sunrise.

On the summit of Mt. Washington, a meteorologist climbs the observatory tower in high winds to smash rime ice off weather instruments. (thanks to the summit crew for the title)
Iron On!!! Lyrics Below.... Hope you all enjoy this video I made... Hear the rime of the Ancient Mariner See his eyes as he stops one of three Mesmerises one of the wedding guests Stay here and listen to the nightmares of the Sea. And the music plays on, and the bride passes by Caught by his spell and the Mariner tells his tale. Driven south to the land of the snow and ice To a place where nobody's been Through the snow fog flies the albatross Hailed in God's name, hoping good luck it brings. And the ship sails on, back to the North Through the fog and the ice the albatross follows on The mariner kills the bird of good omen His shipmates cry against what he's done But when the fog clears, they justify him And make themselves part of the crime. Sailing on and on and North across the sea Sailing on and on and North 'till all is calm. The albatross begins with its vengeance A terrible thirst a curse has begun His shipmates blame bad luck on the Mariner About his neck, the dead bird is hung. And the curse goes on and on at sea And the curse goes on and on for them and me. "Day after day, day after day, we stuck nor breath nor motion As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean Water, water, everywhere and all the boards did shrink Water, water, everywhere nor any drop to drink." (Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1798-1834)) There, calls the mariner, there comes a ship over the line But how can she sail with no wind in her sails and no tide. See...onward she comes Onward she nears, out of the sun See...she has no crew She has no life, wait but there's two. Death and she Life in Death, they throw their dice for the crew She wins the Mariner and he belongs to her now. Then...crew one by one They drop down dead, two hundred men She...She, Life in Death. She lets him live, her chosen one. Narrative "One after one by the star dogged moon, too quick for groan or sigh Each turned his face with a ghastly pang, and cursed me with his eye Four times fifty living men (and I heard nor sigh nor groan), With heavy thump, a lifeless lump. they dropped down one by one." (Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1798-1834)) The curse it lives on in their eyes The Mariner he wished he'd die Along with the sea creatures But they lived on, so did he. And by the light of the moon He prays for their beauty not doom With heart he blesses them God's creatures all of them too. Then the spell starts to break The albatross falls from his neck Sinks down like lead into the Sea Then down in falls comes the rain. Hear the groans of the long dead seamen See them stir and they start to rise Bodies lifted by good spirits None of them speak and they're lifeless in their eyes. And revenge is still sought, penance starts again Cast into a trance and the nightmare carries on. Now the curse is finally lifted And the Mariner sights his home Spirits go from the long dead bodies Form their own light and the Mariner's left alone. And then a boat came sailing towards him It was a joy he could not believe The Pilot's boat, his son and the hermit. Penance of life will fall onto Him. And the ship it sinks like lead into the sea And the hermit shrieves the mariner of his sins. The Mariner's bound to tell of his story To tell his tale wherever he goes To teach God's word by his own example That we must love all things that God made. And the wedding guest's a sad and wiser man And the tale goes on and on and on.
