Torn was taken into custody early this year after cops found out he had broken into the town's Litchfield Bancorp branch. He claimed he mistakenly thought the bank was his home (although he failed to explain why he would break into his own home with a gun), according to police. He later pleaded not guilty to those charges. Tuesday, however, the 80-year-old Emmy winner had a change of heart, pleading guilty to reckless endangerment, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and the illegal carrying of a firearm. He was given a two-and-a-half year suspended jail sentence and three years probation.

Arrested Friday on gun and burglary charges - that's right - Rip was taken yesterday in handcuffs to a courthouse in Bantam, Conn., where his arraignment, on charges of breaking into a bank with a loaded revolver while drunk, was rescheduled to Feb. 17. Police say the gruff-voiced Torn, 78, was armed with a loaded gun when he broke a window and entered the Litchfield Bancorp in his hometown of Salisbury, Conn., on Friday. They said he was so drunk he had no idea he was in a bank - one of the more remarkable defenses in history, if used. Torn has had a DUI-studded past. Torn's lawyer, A. Thomas Waterfall, said Rip "wasn't there intending to commit a crime." Bank president Mark Macomber told TMZ no one was in the bank at the time and that the only damage was a smashed window - which Rip apparently thought was the front door. (Shield eyes in quiet embarrassment for fellow human being.) Torn's film and TV career has spanned more than 50 years. He won an Emmy for The Larry Sanders Show in 1992 and got a 1983 Oscar nom for Cross Creek. He is expected to post $100000 bail and hie him to a Manhattan rehab joint.

Shhhhhh! youtube's rules prevent me from uploading much more than this opening from Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer. The 1970 movie stars Rip Torn as Miller, Ellen Burstyn as his wife. For all the controversy over the book, the movie has only frontal nudity. Certainly far more graphic films were released during this time. However the language is raw and explicit, even by today's standards. Rip Torn and James Callahan give this flick life to Miller's time living in pre-war Paris.
