1952 www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Hot rods are typically American cars with large engines modified for linear speed. The origin of the term "hot rod" is unclear. One explanation is that the term is a contraction of "hot roadster," meaning a roadster that was modified for speed. Roadsters were the cars of choice because they were light. The term became commonplace in the 1930s or 1940s as the name of a car that had been "hopped up" by modifying the engine in various ways to achieve higher performance. The term can also apply to other items that are "souped up" for a particular purpose, such as "hot-rodded amplifier". The term seems first to have appeared in the late 1930s in southern California, where people would race their modified cars on the vast, empty dry lake beds northeast of Los Angeles under the rules of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA). The activity increased in popularity after World War II, particularly in California because many returning soldiers had been given technical training in the service. The original hot rods were old cars (most often Fords, typically Model Ts, 1928--31 Model As, or 1932-34 Model Bs), modified to reduce weight. Typical modifications were removal of convertible tops, hoods, bumpers, windshields, and/or fenders; channeling the body; and modifying the engine by tuning and/or replacing with a more powerful type. Wheels and tires were changed for improved traction and handling. "Hot Rod" was sometimes a ...

The driver of Edmundson Electrical van, DK58 XNH, decides it is so important that he gets to Asda as fast as possible he must undertake an illegal and dangerous overtaking manoeuvre. Rather than waiting a few seconds behind me, like a competent considerate driver, he decides to barge me out of primary by using his vehicle to cause me to swerve to the left and brake heavily. Unfortunately for him he travelled in same general direction as myself, so I took the liberty of ensuring I had a picture of the offending driver. He starts to spout off about me being in the middle of the road, where I am meant to be for roundabouts, I just tell him his driving is sh1t and ride off. On the website for Edmundson Electricals they states:- "The Company is committed to promote a positive and informed health and safety culture and to do all that is reasonable to prevent injury and hazards to health by protecting people, including members of the public, from foreseeable hazards, insofar as they come into contact with the Company or its products. The Company's Health and Safety policy and procedures are set out in Standard Practice Instruction 816". He obviously failed to comply with the companies "Corporate Social Responsibility Statement". In New Delhi, a report has been released on India's road safety and traffic management. In the document are ways the government plans to improve safety and reduce accidents. On Wednesday, Chief of Indian Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, Sitaram Yechury, presented a report at a press conference in New Delhi. Yechury's report - "The National Road Safety and Traffic Management Board Bill"- addresses road transport and safety, aiming to lessen national road accidents. [Sitaram Yechury, Chief, Indian Parliamentary Standing Committee--Transport, Tourism and Culture]: "The main issue is that this bill was relating to the establishment of a 'National Road Safety and Traffic Management Board' to take care of the growing accidents on the roads of the country." Yechury says India's social cost of road accidents is among the highest globally. [Sitaram Yechury, Chief, Indian Parliamentary Standing Committee--Transport, Tourism and Culture]: "The Planning Commission study conducted some years ago had estimated that the social cost of the road accidents of India is as high as three percent of our GDP, and this is one of the highest ratios in the world." The committee is concerned about road safety in India and want roads to be better than international standards. Yechury says to achieve results, technical issues must be well assessed and road services improved. Yechury's report is significant, especially because the Commonwealth Games are scheduled to ...

This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com Toyota became the world's largest automaker in two thousand eight. But after years of building loyalty, the Japanese company may have put its quality brand name at risk, at least temporarily. Toyota is recalling millions of cars and trucks around the world because of cases where vehicles have sped up unexpectedly. Last August, a driver in California was unable to stop. The crash killed him and three of his family members. Toyota says the problem is rare and caused by accelerator pedals becoming stuck open. On January twenty-sixth, the company suspended sales of eight of its top-selling vehicles in the United States, its largest market. Toyota dealers have been receiving parts to make repairs. General Motors and Ford both reported increased sales in January. But Toyota sales in the United States have fallen, and so has its stock price. Toyota says it expects costs and lost sales from its recent safety recalls to total two billion dollars by the end of March. Louis Lataif spent twenty-seven years in the car industry at Ford. Now he is dean of the School of Management at Boston University. He says this is Toyota's biggest recall. A recall late last year involved floor mats that Toyota said could cause the accelerator to get stuck. One of the vehicles in the floor mat recall was the Prius, the world's top selling hybrid. Now American officials are investigating the brake system on the twenty ten ...
In a state as sparsely settled as Mississippi, transportation matters are critically important. Our highways, railways and bridges form more than infrastructure -- they support our economy and they help delineate and define our society and our culture. But much of our existing transportation system is worn at the edges, and serious warnings about bridge and road safety compete with budget concerns for the attention of Mississippi's lawmakers. Federal stimulus efforts have pumped millions of transportation dollars into the state's economy, but Governor Barbour complains of an inefficient process by which job creation fetches a high price. Can Mississippi provide the links needed by prospective industries to get their products quickly to market? We'll also review a wide range of safety concerns and associated legislation on the 3-3-2010 edition of QUORUM. Guests include Mark cConnell, asst. chief engineer for MDOT Field Operations; Bethany Stich, asst. professor of public administration at Mississippi State University; Sen. Tom King, Senate Highway and Transportation Chairman; Rep. Warner McBride, House Transportation Chairman.

Speech at First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety.Part 1 November 19, 2009 Moscow Первая всемирная министерская конференция по безопасности дорожного движения. 19 ноября 2009 года Москва PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA DMITRY MEDVEDEV: Ladies and gentlemen, colleagues, I want to welcome you all to Moscow and the first international conference on road safety. I just asked our Interior Minister how many countries are represented here. 150 countries is a very impressive number. I would like to cordially thank you all for coming to Russia and taking part in this very important event. And I am very pleased that our initiative to hold it has received such enthusiastic response. I think much has already been said. But there are still some things that I consider important and want to repeat. Until recently, traffic safety was seen by some countries as a purely internal matter, a local problem. Meanwhile, the figures, which Im sure have already been cited in this room, show that it is one of the main problems of international development, the one which requires common strategies and joint action. Today, when I looked through the materials prepared for our forum, our conference, I once again realized for myself that the numbers are simply amazing depressing if you prefer. Despite the fact that they probably have already been cited today I cannot but repeat them: more than 3500 people are killed every day in road accidents. Different sources state that every year more than a million ...
Safety-Leadership operational excellence keynote given to senior leaders at Davis H Elliot Companies - October 2009 by Jeff "Odie" Espenship of Target Leadership.
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report, from voaspecialenglish.com American Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has announced plans for a "distracted driving summit" in September in Washington. Transportation and law enforcement officials, safety activists and others will discuss how to deal with drivers who do other things as they drive. Talking on the phone has long been an issue. But text-messaging while driving has gained more attention recently following a number of deadly crashes. Right now, though, distracted driving is not the only thing Secretary LaHood has to think about. For the first time in many months, large numbers of Americans have been buying new cars. And here is at least part of the reason why In late July the government began paying for people to trade in older vehicles for newer ones with greater fuel economy. The program was named the Car Allowance Rebate System, but people know it as "cash for clunkers." It was included as part of an unrelated defense bill passed in June. Congress provided one billion dollars for car dealers to pay for trade-ins. Qualified buyers can receive up to four thousand five hundred dollars toward a new vehicle. So far, most of the trade-ins have been trucks and the majority of new purchases have been cars. Dealers are required to make the trade-ins unusable by destroying the engine, then recycle the old vehicles into scrap metal. The billion dollars was supposed to last until November. But officials said most of ...
This drama takes a different tact to the 'Respect' film it focuses on the driving on business as it allows for a more targeted approach and can addresses some of the key issues surrounding this group. This resource is intended to be used as a foot in the door at workshops and seminars to stimulate debate about work related road safety. The main premise of the film is the difference in time that travelling at 50mph rather than 70mph would have while travelling through a quarter mile of road works which is a 5 second saving. The drama then goes on to explore what could happen in these 5 seconds with increasing consequences to the driver and those around them. The film looks at the pressures that driving on business can have with the rush to get to meetings and presentations and the need to work to tight time scales. The film alludes to other issues such as corporate manslaughter and so allowing for a discussion to be formed around this point. At the beginning of the drama the driver states that he was up until 3am again so could point to a possible culture within the organisation that could contribute to the outcomes shown later in the film.
Meeting on Measures to Reduce Alcohol Consumption in Russia. August 12, 2009 Sochi Начало совещания о мерах по снижению потребления алкоголя в России. 12 августа 2009 года Сочи PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA DMITRY MEDVEDEV: Colleagues, As was agreed a while ago, we are meeting today in expanded format to discuss measures for fighting alcoholism. At the State Council meeting on youth policy we agreed to address this subject separately, in detail, and make the necessary decisions. You know just how serious a problem alcoholism has become for our country. Frankly speaking, it has taken on the proportions of a national disaster. According to the Healthcare and Social Development Ministrys statistics, per capita alcohol consumption in Russia taking the whole population, including babies now stands at 18 litres of pure alcohol a year. You can calculate for yourselves how many bottles of vodka this means quite simply alarming. This is more than twice the level that the World Health Organisation defines as dangerous for peoples health and lives. Such a high level is quite simply a real threat to our countrys and peoples normal life. We have taken various measures over these last years of course. Tighter rules on production and sale of alcoholic beverages were introduced, and significant restrictions were imposed on their advertising. Tougher penalties were introduced for drunk driving. But so far, we have not seen any real change in the situation. To be really honest, all of these efforts ...

As you can see by the comments, there are some bicyclist with extremely aggressive attitudes. They have no tollerance for motorist or bicyclist. Unfortunately, some of the these individuals are League of American Bicyclist Certified Instructors. I can not recommend to my friends the League's safety classes. I have taken there Road safety class and it was too expensive. You can find all of the information they present for free on the internet, including the videos. The practice drills are simple and a waste of time. I recommend to my friends a book by Robert Hurst titled "THE ART OF CYCLING". His is a common sense approach to urban bicycling and he is an excellent writer. You, also, can find much of his advice on the internet. The best thing a bicycle rider can do to improve their safety is to ride your bike. Experience reduces crash rates more than any other activity. Know the risk and enjoy the ride. I am a bicycle commuter. I am not a certified safety instructor. This video represents real world conditions. Not some imaginary utopian world that bicyclist hope to create. The statistics are only approximate. Don't get bogged down in the numbers. The important message is riding in the road has risk. These are some of the most common risk you will face. Much of the advice is for motorist. Motorist do not yield to bicycles in the bike lane and they should be. Cyclist are as much at fault as motorist for the situations in which we find ourselves. If you trust motorist to do ...

Opening Remarks at a Session of the State Council Presidium "On the Situation with the Traffic Safety and Measures to Perfect Governmental Administration in the Field of Traffic Safety" November 15, 2005 The Kremlin, Moscow Вступительное слово на заседании президиума Государственного совета «О состоянии безопасности дорожного движения и мерах по совершенствованию государственного управления в области обеспечения безопасности дорожного движения» 15 ноября 2005 года Москва, Кремль PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN: Dear colleagues, Today we will be discussing a problem that was signalled in the Annual Presidential Address and that everyone recognises as a very serious issue: the safety situation on Russias roads. I think that it is justified that we should discuss this issue at this level, with the heads of the Russian regions, because it is only through coordinating the efforts of the different ministries and agencies and the regional leaders that we will be able to have any real impact on the negative situation we have at the moment in the area of road safety. To give you some tragic figures you already know them, but I will just refresh your memories more than 200000 traffic accidents were registered over the last year in Russia, causing the deaths of almost 35000 people and injuring 250000 people. Many of the victims of these accidents are children and young people, people under 40. It is the most active working-age group who are losing their lives and their health in these ...
