Located on the outskirts of the Lincoln National Forest, it became a boomtown in 1879 following the discovery of gold and coal in the nearby Jicarilla Mountains. It was frequented by notable Old West personalities, including Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, and Shotgun John Collins. Jonathan H. Wise established the town's first newspaper in 1880, called the White Oaks Golden Era. In November, 1880, a posse originating in White Oaks pursued Billy the Kid a distance of over forty miles, culminating in a standoff, during which the posse accidentally shot and killed Deputy Sheriff Jim Carlysle, as the latter was attempting to negotiate with the outlaw. Billy the Kid escaped. The town, at its peak, had a population of 2000 people, reached by 1890. In 1882, with a population of 500, construction was completed on Starr's Opera House, and the town sported several saloons, several general stores, a school, and a town hall. The next reel from my road trip on US66 from Sept 1999 going through Arizona. First of 2 parts. From the state line to Sitgreaves Pass. US66 was nicknamed "The Mother Road" / "Main Street USA" / "Will Rogers Highway". In it's heydey US66, Christened in Nov of 1926 and decertified in 1985, was the road that connected Chicago to Los Angeles a generation before the Interstate came along. Over 2000 miles, Eight States, Three Time Zones makes for a great vacation trip. 80 percent of the road is intact, and in daily use with older original alignments. Some segments get you away from the interstate all together. Western Arizona is a great example. I taped this on my old VHS camera. The music in the background is coming from my tape and cd player. Enjoy.

Its on the road comedy as much of the time in the movie is spent on the road. It is good movie but not as great as the predesser road trip which came back in 2000. Thoreau is a desert town split between part of the Navajo Nation and a residential neighborhood made up of Anglos and Latinos. Although the median income has increased significantly in the last decade, the town faces rising crime, unemployment, and poverty rates. New Mexico narrowly voted for Gore in the 2000 presidential election, but swung to Bush four years later.
Unlike much of Western Iowa, Denisons population is expanding and its economy is thriving. Although the mid-sized town is far from the Mexican border 12% its official population was born in Latin America, well above the state average. Locals believe the percentage is closer to 1/3 and growing with many of the new immigrants having entered the country illegally drawn to the town by its food processing plants. Iowa voted for Gore in 2000, but swung to Bush in 2004. Obama used a victory in Iowa to cement the viability of his candidacy in the Democratic primary.
This is my road trip to see a friend Greg in Peculiar Missouri. From there we both leave for Sibley Iowa to meet up with Dave and Jeff. This trip of mine will cover over 2000 miles and I am enjoying it so far. More to come so keep watching. Eric
