The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department has released footage taken from a squad car that shows the condition of the Canadian National Railroad tracks just before the June 19, 2009, train derailment at South Mulford Road in Rockford. A Sheriff's Department news release sent Friday, April 9, 2010, said the video was made public only because the National Transportation Safety Board authorized it. The NTSB is the lead agency investigating the accident. The accident caused a fiery explosion during which Zoila Tellez, 41, of Rockford, was killed and at least nine other people were injured. Tellez's family has sued Canadian National Railroad.

On October 17th i was filming the IAIS going up the hill and after waiting and waiting for it to come down, we sensed something was wrong. But i had a Rockford gig to do so had to get going, but the friend i was with went to the yard and seen the cars on the ground and hunted me down and i threw my bike in the back of his pick up and i got some video of the aftermath. The cause was the outside rail of the curve in the RR crossing tipped over.

Train derailment in Rockford, IL / Cherry Valley, IL borders, causing a huge fireball explosion and this "out of control" fire of 12-14 train tankers filled with thousands of gallons of ethanol occurred on June 19, 2009, and about 600 surrounding homes were evacuated. At the time of these photos, we bystanders were just learning of the severity and danger of this crisis. This fire burned all night through the following day, until most of the ethanol burned off before firefighters could get closer to contain the fire. Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who was killed, and with those who were injured or traumatized by this explosion and fire. Watch the video footage, within the first 10 minutes, of witness reactions to the crisis unfolding before them on "Train Derailment Fire - Part 1 and Part 2" on this same channel.

Train Derailment of Canadian National freight train carrying tankers filled with thousands of gallons of ethanol - derails and explodes into a gigantic orange fireball hundreds of feet high in Rockford, IL, about 90 miles west of Chicago, in northern Illinois, Winnebago County on June 19, 2009. Listen to eye witnesses respond and react to the rapidly dangerous disaster unfolding before them, literally a few hundred feet or yards away. Video shot from Shelburne Drive along a northern set of tracks, about a football field distance from the accident. The explosion occurred approximately 8:39 pm - at the train crossing, while passenger vehicles waited in line. One confirmed death by thermal injury, with others burned by the intense heat as they exited their vehicles, running to safety. A loud rumbling, thundering, roaring sound, like that of military fighter jet engines just prior to take off or as passing overhead, occurred just before the huge fireball explosion was seen raising high in the sky, above the treetops - ending with a large vertical plume of black smoke. Earlier, 3.25" of rain fell over one hour, approximately 6:30-7:30 pm. Video begins at 8:49 pm about 5 minutes after the first responders of Cherry Valley fire department arrive. ROCKFORD Trying to escape from a derailing train that set off a fiery explosion, a woman abandoned her car at a rail crossing and made it 20 feet on foot before she fell and died. Eighteen rail cars, all loaded with thousands of gallons of highly flammable ethanol, left the tracks in Friday's derailment, exploding into flames. The wreckage burned through the night, but the fire was dying down Saturday afternoon as federal investigators began collecting evidence. National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Robert Sumwalt said investigators won't speculate about what may have caused the derailment on the edge of Rockford, about 80 miles northwest of Chicago. A thorough investigation could take a year, he said. Investigators will look into the rail crew's performance, the train's mechanics, signaling, the integrity of the cars containing ethanol and the emergency response, Sumwalt said. An autopsy is planned for Sunday to determine exactly how the victim died, said Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia, who described the woman's futile escape.
Actual footage starts at 2:22 in the video. news.yahoo.com www.cnn.com

A tanker train carrying what we've been told was Ethanol derailed and exploded. UPDATE: The fire only burned for 2 or 3 days thanks to the careful work of our volunteer fire crews as opposed to the 5 or 6 that had been estimated. In the end no one was hurt and the only damage done to the surrounding areas was a little bit of melted house siding, and the park that was on the other side of the tracks was ruined at one end. About 1/5th of the town was evacuated that night as a precaution, but all returned safely to their homes within 48 hours. The rail compnay that owned the train and maintianed the tracks is not only paying for the clean-up but also is giving a small monetary consideration to the people who were displaced for the weekend. This has been a Merry Cranberry Production.
