A long and dense trance-inducing drone of sustained notes, rich with overtones and harmonic embellishments, coming from a space so vast and unexplored that seemed almost of non-human, even electronic nature. This recording is in the public domain Roma Wilson was born in 1910 in Union County, MS. Different sources list his birthplace as Tupelo, Hickory Flat, or Blue Springs. His mother left home when he was fifteen and he soon followed suit, not liking the way that his father had taken over the household. He learned how to play harmonica on worn-out instruments that his older brothers had discarded. He teamed up with a blind slide guitar player by the name of Rev. Leon Pinson to tour the state playing music and preaching the gospel. Not everyone was a fan of his music, some claiming that his "choking" harmonica style was too close to the blues. Wilson's reply to them that he was man of God, and would never play the blues. The churchgoers around the state that weren't so critical reveled in the performances by he and Pinson. He left Mississippi in the 1940's for Detroit. In his younger days he worked for the railroad, in a steel mill, and later for a construction company owned by one of his sons. In 1948, Wilson and three of his sons entered a record shop on Hastings Street in Detroit owned by Joe Von Battle. (Who would soon operate his own JVB Records label). Wilson and his sons didn't know it at the time, but Von Battle had talked them into performing six songs. While they were performing, Von Battle was recording them. Von Battle then licensed two of the recordings to the Pennsylvania label Gotham Records. The one 78 RPM record became a collector's item among gospel ...

Gypsy (or Gipsy) is a word that has several overlapping meanings. Initially the word was used to describe a people who called themselves Romany who first appeared in England at about the beginning of the 16th century. Although in certain contexts it is still used to describe the Romany, it also describes those in English speaking countries who live a lifestyle similar to that of the Romany, or as a translation of equivalent words in other languages. The making of this video This morning (June 12, 2008) I arrived at San Pietro Railroad Station and took a bus to the city center. After only 100 m of drive our bus was stopped by police to free the way for the President of the United States... I had to continue my way walking. As I had a digital camera with me, I though I will express my personal opinion to the unwanted guest and share it with people on the Net. Shortly later, somewhere more in the center next to Piazza della Cancelleria pedestrian traffic was blocked, too and the presidential fleet passed by. This is where I did the videos. It was somehow risky with all the cops and safety guys around and concerned for Mr. Bush. He was in the 2nd car. In a democracy police should protect the people from evildoers, today they did it the other way round. (I learned the word evildoers from Mr. Bush's speeches). A guy from New York stood next to me and expressed his dissent for Mr. Bush, which he claimed to share with so many other Americans. I truly welcomed him to Italy as we welcome all Americans with peaceful intentions and opposed to Mr. Bush. The sealed trash bin was at via Bissolati near the American Embassy. After Germany and its Axis allies invaded Yugoslavia in April 1941, the Nazis permitted the fascist and terrorist Ustasa organization to found the Independent State of Croatia. The Ustasa instituted a reign of terror and systematically killed Serbs, Jews, and Roma (Gypsies). Croatian fascists murdered or expelled hundreds of thousands of Serbs. In the countryside, Ustasa guards burned down entire Serbian villages and killed the inhabitants. Croatian fascists raped Serbian women and tortured Serbian men. The Ustasa regime established numerous concentration camps in Croatia between 1941 and 1945. The largest was the Jasenovac complex. The Jasenovac Memorial Area Collection contains thousands of artifacts--ranging from a recipe book written by a starving Stara Gradiska camp inmate to shackles found at Jasenovac--and related materials from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's archives. In this interview, Eileen Blankenbaker, object conservator at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, speaks about artifacts from Jasenovac in the museum's collection.
