George Galloway speaks to a trio of Burqa hating callers (on the recent ban of wearing the burqa in public in France), each one with their own take on the Islamic women's dress. 1st caller thinks that the Burqa is intimidating to him. The caller challenges Galloway if he thinks if Nikolas Sarkozy and Bernard Kouchner. Galloway believes the former is a racist and the latter not. He justifies the calling a Sarko as a racist because of his policies on the Roma (gypsy) people. Double standards here. The caller is fine with the burqa ban but doesn't like the rounding up of the Roma people. The caller invokes Saudi Arabia (several times) regarding under age marriages and polygamy (None of his business say Galloway). 2nd caller claims that Muslim husbands force their Muslim wives to wear the burqa without citing a credible source. She also invokes the Saudi Arabia agreement like with the previous caller. Galloway points out that all societies are male dominated. 3rd caller apparently has no clue about how many Muslim women in the UK actually wear the burqa. Galloway states that 99% of Muslim women in the UK do not cover their faces. Originally broadcasted on 17th September 2010.

The European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, will have no choice but to start a legal action against France for its expulsion of Roma, Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding said Tuesday during a press conference. "Enough is enough," said Reding. "I am personally convinced that the commission will have no choice." "I intend to recommend to President Barroso the fast track infringement procedure, so we lose no time," she said. Reding called France's expulsion of the Roma people a "disgrace." On Monday French media published a leaked French official memo suggesting the Roma had been specifically targeted by the authorities. The memo contradicted assurances to EU officials from Besson and Lellouche that immigrants were being treated on a case-by-case basis. The order, dated 5 August, was sent from the interior ministry to regional police chiefs. "Three hundred camps or illegal settlements must be cleared within three months, Roma camps are a priority," it said, according to the BBC. Besson told France 2 television on Monday that he was "not aware of this circular". Last week the European Parliament urged the French government to halt the deportations - a call rejected by Paris. On Monday Lellouche told the BBC he was "sick and tired" of the criticism directed at France over the Roma.
MaximsNewsNetwork: 13 September 2010 - UNTV: Geneva, Switzerland - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR), Navi Pillay said today (13 September) that France's dismantling of Roma settlements and expulsion to their countries of origin exacerbate the stigmatization of Roma and the extreme poverty and exclusion in which they live; opening the September session of the Human Rights Council, Pillay expressed grave concern about the frequent stereotyping and discriminatory rhetoric by officials and the media when referring to the Roma in Europe. The High Commissioner urged European States including France to adopt policies that would allow the Roma people to promote social cohesion and overcome their marginalization. In a wide-ranging statement, Pillay also condemned reports of targeted killings of terror suspects by the United States. She said the obligations of States to protect people from terrorism and to fight the scourge were beyond question. She stressed however that anti-terrorism measures must never imperil human rights and legal processes. The Human Rights Chief said she was troubled about a reported US programme of targeted killings of terror suspects in circumstances that challenge international norms. She noted that a lawsuit had been filed challenging the US government's right to target its citizens outside of war zones when they are suspected of involvement in terrorism. High Commissioner Pillay also pointed to the victimization and violent ...

www.france24.com Latest update: 30/08/2010 - France - Roma people Govt minister uses crime stats to justify Roma deportation In response to the growing storm of condemnation over the deportation of Roma from France, interior minister Brice Hortefeux stated on Wednesday that crime perpetrated by Roma has skyrocketed over the past year. France's interior minister Brice Hortefeux said Wednesday that over the past 18 months crime committed by Roma people has increased by 259 percent in Paris alone. The minister's statement came after a flood of criticism and mounting party division over President Nicolas Sarkozy's summer campaign to dismantle illegal gypsy camps and to deport Roma on a large scale to Eastern Europe. The controversy has been fuelled by declarations by the president that link Roma, Gypsies and travelling people to crime. "Today, in Paris, the reality is that almost one in five perpetrators of a theft is a Romanian," Hortefeux said on Wednesday at the joint press conference with immigration minister Eric Besson. "This is not about stigmatising this or that population, but we cannot close our eyes to reality." Besson went on to say, "We must broaden the possibilities for issuing deportation orders (for people who pose) a threat to public order by repeated acts of theft or aggressive begging." Besson told reporters he planned to add two amendments to this end to an immigration bill that will be presented to parliament late next month. More than 100 Gypsy camps ...

"There are four hundred books on the gypsies", says a modern tsiganologue, "but in all not more than ten of which tell us anything new or true about them". Whether this quote (from 1886) was meant to be taken at face value or not, and despite the fact that there are currently thousands of books devoted to the Roma,it certainly remains accurate in its essence. Misinformation, misconception and erroneous stereotype about them and their nature is as rampant today as ever. And unfortunately prejudice, persecution, oppression, and ostracization is on the rise! The purpose of this suite of pages is to contribute to the increased awareness of the facts about this truly remarkable people. Although the Romani people are often referred to as "Gypsies" (and prefer to be called by their more proper designation, Roma), not all "gypsies" or nomadic peoples are Roma. The Roma are descendants of the ancient warrior classes of Northern India, particularly the Punjab, and they are identifiable by their language, religion, and customs, which can be directly linked to those of the Punjabi in northern India. Former Indian Prime Minister Indira Ghandi summarized the state of the Romani people very nicely in her opening speech at the International Romani Festival in Chandigarh, India on October 28, 1983. It is paraphrased below (by Milena Hubschmannova & Jaroslav Jurasek), and we have also made the full text of her address available. "There are some 15 million Roms dispersed across the world ...
