Twin Sisters to Graduate as Valedictorian and Salutatorian May 27, 2010—Sisters Lorena and Lilliana DeLeon are used to sharing. They share a car, a room and this weekend they will share the stage as the top two graduating seniors of their high school class. On Sunday May 30th at 1 pm at Reliant Arena, the DeLeon twins will graduate as the valedictorian and salutatorian of the 2010 graduating class from Barbara Jordan High School for Careers. The two are currently preparing their commencement speeches. Lorena, the eldest by only a few minutes, is the school's valedictorian while her sister Lilliana is the salutatorian. There is only a .01 grade point difference separating the two. Both insist there is no competition between them, and they instead prefer to work together as a team, both at home, school and even at a part time job at a local supermarket. "We like the same subjects in school, so we bounce ideas off each other and help each other out on projects and assignments," says Lorena. "We even study together and do flashcards to prepare for tests and exams," says Lilliana. The two hope to continue studying together in the fall at Prairie View A&M University. Lorena has been offered a full ride, while her sister has a partial scholarship offer. "I told them I would only accept the scholarship offer if they can give the same one to my sister," says Lorena. The two are waiting to hear back from the university but are hopeful it will work out. "We don't want to be ...

Sophies POV: The bell rang for lunch and Ms. Swift dismissed us. I turned my paper in to the assignment bin told Ms. Swift bye before leaving. "Bye Ms. Swift, have a good day!" I told her with a smile. "You to Sophie, bye." She smiled back at me. I walked into the cafeteria and looked around for Maddie, she was sitting down next to Hayden and the new girl, Claire. I skipped over to them with a smile and sat down. "Hey guys!" I smiled. Hayden hugged me and Maddie pecked my check. I turned to Claire. "Hi! You must be new, I'm Sophie, its nice to meet you." I smiled at her. "Hey, nice to meet you too, my names Claire." she gave a small smile back. I didn't mind, I was a little over friendly but thats who I am, I always thinking positive. Claire looked up at me, "You don't eat lunch?" she ask curiously. I giggled, "No I'm a vegan, and also I don't trust school lunches," she laughed. "Why don't you bring your own?" she asked. "I just find it better to eat at home, its a much cleaner environment." She nodded. "Well I'm going to go, I have Mr. Lautner next for Physical Education, and you know I like to be early. Bye guys!" I waved at them as I walked into the gym. I saw a man wearing a white tee-shirt and gym pants. I walked over to him and he saw me and smiled, "Well hello," he said in a friendly tone. "Hi! Im in your fifth hour class, I just wanted to get here early, I like being early to all my classes". I smiled. He laughed, "Well that's a good way to start off the year. I'm ...

nanoHUB.org is a community web site that offers online simulation and more services to over 90000 users annually free of charge. Over 150 simulation tools are available and over 1600 other content items ranging from research seminars to complete nanotechnology classes are hosted on the nanoHUB. At this we believe that there is no other scientific gateway which hosts as many content items to as many users. This presentation will provide a few highlights of how nanoHUB.org is being used in education and what kind of impact it has had so far. Tools and seminars are indeed being used as instructional materials. nanoHUB has been used in over 290 classes in the past few years in over 90 institutions for class room instruction. New developments are under way to provide one-stop-shops for tool-powered classes / curricula, which aggregate tools, homework assignments, and other teaching materials into one single resource. It is demonstrated that education and research cannot cleanly be separated and that some tools clearly show use in education as well as in research. An example of a student migrating from educational use to documented research use is provided. On nanoHUB: nanohub.org

The USTA is proud to recognize the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, with the 2009 USTA/NJTL Chapter of the Year Award. The program was formally recognized during the USTA's annual Community Tennis Development Workshop held on January 22-24, 2010 in San Diego, California. The City of Reading Recreation Department offers diverse and innovative tennis and academic programming that strengthens the health and quality of life of its participants. Providing affordable and accessible activities to low income families, the department works cooperatively with the Reading School District, Olivet Boys & Girls Club and numerous social agencies. More than a quarter of families in Reading live in poverty, with many children facing a risk of substance abuse, delinquency, violence and obesity. The citys supervised tennis program emphasizes wellness, increased self esteem, teamwork and skill development, and offers opportunities for volunteer activities. The Reading NJTL has implemented an inventive and effective color code progressive training program that includes an evaluation process and specific tasks to be completed before graduating to the next level. Recreation center programs require participants to complete homework assignments in the study room prior to playing tennis, while the school-based program requires progress cards to be filled out by teachers on a weekly basis. As a result of its efforts, eight area schools now offer QuickStart Tennis programming as a physical education ...
Plastics touch every aspect of life. Without plastics, much of what we depend on daily at work and home would disappear. Despite its prevalence, the moldable material doesnt enjoy top-of-the-mind awareness, especially among the current generation of students. This episode of degrees that work. attempts to change that. The expertise of national experts is combined with the work of high school students engaged in a plastics project to illuminate the exciting nature and possibilities of the field. But once you find your niche, it'll feel just like home. To complete this How-To you will need: An interest in education Some self-motivation Step 1: Get involved in your major All departments have a plethora of academic groups, research opportunities, and mentoring tracks. If you have a major in mind, getting involved with these activities can help shrink an intimidating school and introduce you to students with similar interests. Step 2: Interact in lectures At big lectures, sit in the first few rows of class and don't be afraid to throw your hand up occasionally to ask a question or make a comment. Not only will you make new friends by sitting in the same area everyday, but if you get the professor to notice you, those 300-seat lecture halls will start to feel like actual classrooms. Tip: Each semester, try mixing in at least one class -- whether it's an elective or a requirement -- that only has 20 or so students. Step 3: Talk with your professors Visit professors during office hours. Whether you stop by to seek help with an assignment or just to chat ...

This video was made for a Video Production II project. The assignment was to shoot and edit a project that reflects my style as a producer...well I'm not sure what my style as a producer is yet, but I know what I like to do and that's sewing. So I made up the show Whitney Sews. I did all the camera work and since my tripod was crappy it took all day to set up shots and film everything. But I'm pretty happy with how everything worked out. www.KaplanOnlineSchools.com - Welcome to Kaplan Virtual Education? So, what is online high school anyway? Fundamentally, online learning is using technology, specifically computer technology and the internet more broadly, to connect teachers and students who may not be physically in the same room. But its using technology to facilitate the learning process rather than replace any particular part of the learning process. One to one instruction - There's a lot of IMing going on. If a student needs a particular kind of help, a teacher will pick up a phone and call or they may do a white board exercise. So the day goes on like that with many, many interactions of varied kinds. Personalized Learning - There are also these things called gizmos in the science classes and there are labs online so it's great. The system is really easy to use and understand so that wouldn't be a problem for anybody. When I'm doing my studies they give me icons of technology, where I can listen and watch videos that will help me do my assignment and get better grades on them. Open up a world of possibilities sign up today for Kaplan Academy a tuition-free online high school designed around you.

If the vastness of space is something you find fascinating then these subjects will be particularly attractive. Astronomy and Astrophysics are intellectually stimulating disciplines where you will gain an insight into some of the most extreme environments known to humanity. You will investigate the fundamental workings of stars and the universe, whilst developing your own scientific skills and experiences. Our teaching is supported by internationally recognised research within the Centre for Astrophysics. For example, UCLan astronomers lead the UK's involvement in the Southern African Large Telescope - the largest single optical instrument in the southern hemisphere. The degree programmes, especially the four-year MPhys route, provide a strong and mature foundation for astronomical research. The next step would be to push back the frontiers yourself and, on average, 40% of our graduates go on to masters courses or to PhD research both here and in other Universities across the world. In addition, there is a growing demand for scientists who have the ability to make measurements, analyse the results and present the data using the latest technological advances. Governments have recognised that there is a short-fall in science graduates who possess these highly employable skills. Our recent graduates have found employment in industry, government research institutes, overseas observatories, the financial markets, the teaching profession and scientific journalism. Teaching ...

** CLICK "MORE INFO" FOR ELABORATION "Project 10 to the 100th" Contest Entry Goal: To provide the world community with a Free College Education that would be equivalent to the average college education. The idea? Pull together the world's academic resources (aka - google) and create a new educational system that combines online college text book information, social interactivity between professors and students from around the world, video tutorials, student-to-student / member-to-member note sharing, q. & a. forums, & live multi-user chat and provides a richer, free education. The world community's knowledge and experience... freely shared between the entire community. Professors and knowledge contributors would benefit by sharing ad revenue fostered by Google Adsense throughout their online text, video, and multimedia lessons. In addition to the evolutionary tightening of the world community, national economic hurdles would be alleviated over time by the reduction of collective student financial debt. Let's put that into perspective: - Average tuition, room and board (for in-state students) at the nations four-year public colleges and universities for an entire academic year (2006-07): $14203 $14203 x 4 years = $56812 That is more than double the corresponding figure in 1990. There are 18.4 million students enrolled in the nations colleges and universities this fall. (This is up from 13.5 million 20 years ago.) 18.4 million students x $56812 (average college cost for 4 ...

Next we are going to show you one of the equipment kits we use when we are traveling on assignment. Each kit is different and has a very specific purpose. So lets take a look. This kit is our Nikon kit. It houses our D3, a D2X; a primary and a backup. We use a 12-24 DX lens, 70-200 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 17-55 DX 2.8, 2X teleconverter. We've got a Speedlight SB-800; it's got the tungsten gel on the front. The reason we use the tungsten gel or a fluorescent gel is to mask the color temperature in the room we're working in. These are obviously interchangeable, so we can use them depending on the situation we're in. We use a tungsten or a fluorescent gel. We have extra double A batteries. We have three think tank cardholders. We really like these cardholders because we can hold a large number of cards; and we can put our unused cards at the top and our used cards reversed on the bottom. What we do with our cards when we're done shooting them is instead of having them in upwards; we have them in upside down. That's an indicator to us that we've shot on the card and this card needs to be downloaded. Underneath, we have 17-35 2.8, and we have a 300 2.8. In addition on the 300 2.8, we have a 1.4 teleconverter as well. So between the 2X teleconverter and the 1.4X ...
