Rorke S Drift has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
Part 5 of Zulu from 1964. And even more preparations and character development take place in this clip. Most of this scene takes place in the hospital, where we get understand the motivations of some of the characters well see later in the filmsuch as Private Hook, the one whos basically slacking off while in the hospital. The Witt daughter tries over and over to make her case that the wounded need to leave with them. But after being exposed to their boorish behavior, she eventually leavesand there is much rejoicing. The man who plays Color-Sergeant Bourne is Nigel Greene. He was one of many character actors in Britain during the 60s and 70s, and youll see him appear over and over in TV shows and on film basically playing the same kind of authoritarian type in a lot of films. In particular, he plays Michael Caines boss in The Ipcress File, and very well I might add. And if you are a fan of Jason and the Argonauts like I am, youll also remember him as Hercules in that film. Nigel was a lot like some actors such as Walter Mathau, where they got a later start in acting in lifebut once he got in, he had tons of work, a lot of it on TV shows. However, Nigel abruptly died in 1972 at the age of 47, from an apparent overdoes of sleeping medication. While not ruled as a suicide, Peter OToole has mentioned that he noted Nigel was depressed during the filming of The Ruling Class, and suspected that his death may have been a suicide. Well never know for sure.
Part 4 of Zulu from 1964. Preparations continue, while the Witts attempt (in vain) to try to convince Chard and Bromhead that they need to scram! But the regiment commanders arent having itthe Witts can stay so long as they dont interfere. Easier said than done. While the commanders make their plans to defend Rorkes Drift, the Witts increasingly feel compelled to take the wounded and those that would listen with them out of harms way. Tension builds! Lets talk a little about Jack Hawkins, the actor that plays Rev. Witt. This guy was born in 1910, and while he got his start in theater at a very young age, he quickly made a transition to British cinema and basically became a leading man by the 1950s. However, most Americas probably wont remember his earlier workthe one role I remember him playing the most was in Ben Hur from 1959, as the Roman Commander Quintus Arrius, the guy who eventually saves Judah Ben Hur (Charleton Heston) from slavery and adopts him as his own son. But he also had many supporting roles throughout his career playing British officers (Bridge Over the River Kwai,Lawrence of Arabia, Waterloo, etc.). Having served in the military during WW2, I guess thats only fitting. He died in 1974, apparently from complications related to larynx surgery or something. FYI, some of you may recognize the medical officer in a few scenes in this clip. That guy is Patrick Magee. Most of us Americans wouldnt know many of his prior films, mainly because he had a tendency to ...
Summary: Part 2 of Zulu from 1964. Well, as my daddy sez, the proverbial shit has it the fan! News reaches the Zulu King that a great victory has occurred at Isandhlwana, and now its on like Donkey Kongokay, probably a poor choice of words, but you get my meaning. Now the Witts are off to Rorkes Drift to warn the remaining British troops to hit the road before they get swamped by thousands of Zulu warriors. Then we transition to the 24th Regiment of Foot, who are using Rorkes Drift as a supply and medical station. Here we meet Lt. John Chard (Stanley Baker), whos an engineer trying to build a bridge or some kind of ferry across a river there. And we also meet the highly elitist Lt. Gonville Bromhead (Michael Caine), out hunting cheetahs for sport. We also get introduced to some of the other troops at Rorkes Drift. This film is primarily a star vehicle for Caine and Baker. This was one of Caines first films, and its ironic because hes known for playing working-class, Cockney types in most films. But his Queens English is pretty convincing in this film, and it helped catapult him to stardom later in the decademore on him (and Stanley Baker) later.
Summary: Many years ago, I used to watch Monty Python episodes and movies all the time. There was one sketch they did in Monty Pythons The Meaning of Life, where they showed a pitched battle between British colonial troops and Africa tribesmen. The main joke about the sketch was that while the troops were fighting, the elitist officers were trying to figure out amongst themselves why one of their colleagues had their leg bitten off. Now, the skit was marginally funny in its own right, but as a young child living in America, I didnt understand that part of the sketchs humor was the over-the-top portrayal of British colonial troops in action, from literary works in the 19th Century AND from films such as the one I will begin posting here: Zulu It wasnt until damn near 1995 that I actually saw this film from beginning to end. By that point in my life, I was a little more worldly (for an American, at any rate), so I knew just a little bit about the Anglo-Zulu wars during Britains colonial rule in Africa. However, what I didnt know was far from being another hackneyed, Rule Britannia-esque motion picture, it was in fact a fairly exciting action film to watch! It lacks the humor and character development or chemistry of similar films like Gunga Din from 1939. And like most colonial warfare films, its depiction of the Zulu tribal army is simplistic (maybe borderline racist). But if you can put those issues aside, its definitely a sprawling epic that will entertain you folks out ...
