A short little video for my soc 101 class, the assignment was to create a reflection on education. Provide a thorough explanation of the hidden curriculum, (hint: what other concept does it involve ex: passive consumption, normativity). And HOW do your experiences in schooling reflect the hidden curriculum The beginning clip is a scene from Supersize Me. The education system's problem with the overt curriculum is that they do not allow the students to learn what they need to know. Apparently the students do not know who Jesus was. Passive consumption and normativity allows the student to act like robots because they are brain washed to follow what their teachers tell then. I thought it was sad that the students did not even know who Jesus is. My cousin Katie goes to a private school that teaches there students bible stories, so the first picture, she said the squirrel was the holy spirit at first. Maybe because it was right after her school and she thought i was tricking her into thinking that she had to say a bible related item. Which is following the normativity that her school forces on her. Which is to say bible related answers. But other than that, she was able to answer the other to picture correctly. This shows that private schools probably give a better environment for students. In a private school, teachers do not have to worry about getting laid off of work because of the parents paying the tuition. But it does not make sense why college professors are getting laid off because there are a lot of students paying tuition. Which is one of many flaws of this education system. My cousin Katie is going to be the next Rosa Parks.

This video was produced in 2004 by students at St. Andrew's - Sewanee School in Sewanee, TN. Mr. Dean's civil rights class studied the Highlander Folk School and produced a video documentary about its history. The school was located near Monteagle, TN (a few miles from the school) and played an important part in the nation's early civil rights movement (hosting Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Pete Seger, among others). The class interviewed Scott Bates. Mr. Bates was a professor at the University of the South and became involved with Highlander in 1954. He was able to provide wonderful insight because of his long and intimate involvement with Highlander. Although the school was closed by the State of Tennessee in the early 1960s, he remains on the board of directors of Highlander Research and Education Center, an organization formed after the folk school was closed. Myles Horton founded the Highlander Folk School in Monteagle in 1932. Learn more about St. Andrew's - Sewanee School at www.sasweb.org
