SD Burman has sung very few songs, but almost all of them have become immortal. Here is one of the most memorable songs sung by SD Burman. The movie is Guide, and the lyrics, written by Shailendra, are so simple, yet they are so deeply philosophical and full of pathos, all at the same time. The hero after being freed from the jail, finds himself alone in the world, and he is wondering what lies in store for him. The town where once he ruled the roost and which has forgotten him ( no one either from the town or his near or dear ones comes to receive him), may not treat him kindly, he thinks, and decides to go away to some unknown distant place instead. He is walking away to that distant place, and this song is playing in the background. It is a very moving situation, and that has been conveyed very emotively in this song.

"Jhoola dhanak ka dheere-dheere hum jhoolen, Ambar toh kya hai taaron ke bhi lab chhoo len" from the 1955 film "House No. 44" --- This celestial song that takes you for a glimpse of the world over the rainbow is one of the finest of Sachin Dev Burman's creations. MADHURA PUROHIT writes ... "The first time ever that I heard Phaili hui hain sapno ki baahen was late in the night... and I think the half asleep child that I was, thought that this was a song heard only in my dreams ( I should admit that my dreams are not normally akin to Hindi films complete with soundtrack!). Fast forward a few years to when I heard this song again, this time in the morning (so no dream sequence possible this time round) and was moved again by the simplicity of the tune and its uncanny ability to transpose me outside of myself. I have to admit that to the 12 year old that I was, things like mds etc were way out of ambit- a song was considered to have made the mark, if one kept a cassette ready just so that one could record it if on the offchance Vividh Bharati played it again ! Needless to say, this song more than made the grade. Sahir's delicately crafted words have been given a magical touch by Burmanda's haunting melody, add to that Lata's beautiful voice and you have a song that dreams are made of. I shall be the first to confess that I am not really a lyrics oriented person, but even I, have been moved by these lyrics... Phaili hui hai sapnon ki bahein.... aajaa chal dein kahin door ...
'Piya tose naina laage re' stands out for the intrinsic beauty of its 'roopak taal' based tune. This 4 stanza/8 minute piece is a marathon song that traces the rise of Rosy (the film's female protagonist played by Waheeda) from a small time artist to the sensational dancing star Nalini. Ritu Chandra writes further - "The song starts off suddenly without any prelude (a habit that was quite common with Dada) and then moves ahead with rich orchestral interludes. The composition itself has two meters running simultaneously in the antaras. One with a long drawn out alaap as in Aayi holi aayi and the other with a fast 'raat ko jab chaand chamke' both blend back into the mukhda seamlessly with extremely catchy bols, set to the rhythm of 'Dhi na k dhi n dhi n'. These bols have been woven into the overall lyrical theme of the song beautifully by the lyricist Shailendra. The orchestral interludes in this song are rich and varied. Though these music pieces are tailor-made for a dance choreography, unlike most dance pieces they do not remain limited to a frenzy of ghungroos, tabla and sarangi/harmonium. The orchestral interludes, here, in typical SD Burman style, are uncluttered and spontaneous. However they still use a wide variety of instruments and are richly layered. Violins, Sitars, ghungroos, tabla, drums (note the lovely use of a north eastern drum in the portion before 'bhor ki bela suhani') and the flute all fit into the overall composition like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle ...
Rangeela Re. This song has an unusual beat for a sad song. But then it's a sad song with a difference.... It's a sad song, dance song and party song all rolled into one! Lata's delightful Hey Rangeela.. is a very 'colourful' start to a song that is essentially a lament. All in all it is a multi-hued song in terms of singing, orchestration and also emotional content. Surely the creme-la-creme of the Lata-SDB oeuvre.
