Parade Honors Staff Sergeant Sal Giunta Mark Carlson/SourceMedia Group News, 23 November 2010, No comments Categories: lifestyle and leisure Hundreds of people lined the streets of Hiawatha to welcome home Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta Tuesday. Many were just hoping to catch a glimpse of their new hometown hero. "It brings tears to my eyes when I think about him," said Ginny Huisman, an Eastern Iowa native. Alongside his wife, Jennifer, Giunta waved to the crowd from atop a Hiawatha firetruck. Some people along the parade route used the moment to educate. "I've lived in Iowa all my life, for 70 years," said Anogene Varner, "My husband and brothers were in the service and I'm very proud." Varner brought two of her grandchildren to the parade. She hopes the experience will help show them the impact veterans have on America. Many veterans also were at Tuesdays parade. "It hits home, and you have so much respect for a person that puts out this effort," said Mike Wood, a Vietnam veteran. "It's very heart warming, very emotional," said Kurtis Bower, a veteran of the war in Iraq, "To do what Sergeant Giunta did, he experienced loss, he overcame his odds, and he actually came out on top that day."
Members of the Hiawatha Fire Department raised the Patriots Flag for Tuesdays (November 23, 2010) parade for Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta. The 30 X 58 foot 60 pound flag will fly in all of the 50 US States before it flies in NYC, Washington DC and Shanksvile PA on the Tenth Anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

President Obama awards Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, US Army, the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry for his courageous actions against an armed enemy in the Korengal Valley of Afghanistan in October 2007. Key quote from President Obama: Now, I already mentioned I like this guy, Sal. And as I found out myself when I first spoke with him on the phone and when we met in the Oval Office today, he is a low-key guy, a humble guy, and he doesn't seek the limelight. And he'll tell you that he didn't do anything special; that he was just doing his job; that any of his brothers in the unit would do the same thing. In fact, he just lived up to what his team leader instructed him to do years before: "You do everything you can." Staff Sergeant Giunta, repeatedly and without hesitation, you charged forward through extreme enemy fire, embodying the warrior ethos that says, "I will never leave a fallen comrade." Your actions disrupted a devastating ambush before it could claim more lives. Your courage prevented the capture of an American soldier and brought that soldier back to his family. You may believe that you don't deserve this honor, but it was your fellow soldiers who recommended you for it. In fact, your commander specifically said in his recommendation that you lived up to the standards of the most decorated American soldier of World War II, Audie Murphy, who famously repelled an overwhelming enemy attack by himself for one simple reason: "They were killing my friends ...
