For wide distribution if that's OK! Hello All, I am hoping to record another CD this year with Veteran Soul to complete the audio tryptic (3 interrelated pieces) of 'Vietnam Dreamscape', 'Angels Beyond the Abyss' and the as yet non existent '521 Reasons to Cry' I'm going to need to convince ABC Records to get behind it on the strength of the size of the national veteran community, partners kids and friends. There only interest will be in the commercial viability of the recording and if they can see the potential they will spend the marketing dollars to make it work for them. As mentioned, this new album will be called '521 Reasons to Cry' will have a 2 fold purpose. 1. It will be the only complete audio tribute to those who fell in Vietnam. We do not have such a recognition piece as yet and time is running out! 2. I'm hoping that I can further help cement the general public's image of Vietnam Vets as clear and difinitive ANZACS. Around 30 years from now we'll all be gone and the reality is that Vietnam Veteran's Day, 18th August each year might probably dissapear from the calendar while ANZAC Day will go on for as long as their is an Australia as we know it. If anyone out there has stories about specific individuals who fell in Vietnam (no names needed) and feel that the circumstance and courage can be portrayed in song then please let me know about it (him) and I'll give it my best shot. I have attached an early draft of the lyrics and a very rough, low resolution sound ...

Photo: Jason South A year after the Black September fires swept through Victoria, a nation mourned together, writes Karen Kissane. In Melbourne, the bells tolled half-muffled before the solemn service in a grand cathedral. In Kinglake, a crowd of 2000 watched children release 173 fluttering butterflies, one for every soul that had been lost. But for every public ceremony yesterday, there were many private ones. In Bendigo, widow Carol Kane had her own humble way of commemorating the death of her husband Mick on Black Saturday: she planned to sit in their burned-out block with his favourite food, ''his packet of chips and his Coke, and just share''. The first anniversary of the Black Saturday fires that killed 173 children, women and men and laid waste to swathes of rural Victoria was a moment to look back, mourn and reflect on a painful and historic year. The Victorian Premier, John Brumby, said he hoped it would mark the moment that looking back became looking forward: ''I actually think so many people, in a sense, are moving on after 12 months today I think for many people, they're just keen to get to tomorrow and look more to the future.'' But his memories of that dreadful day, like the memories of so many Victorians who endured the flames and their aftermath, have not yet faded. He recalled vividly, he told a TV ...

Communities can help healing, says Nixon MICHELLE DRAPER | February 7, 2010 - 11:09PM news.smh.com.au Communities gathering to remember loved ones lost on Black Saturday can help the healing process, the head of the state's bushfire recovery authority says. On the first anniversary of the February 7 inferno which killed 173 people, Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority chair Christine Nixon said people were still traumatised. "You have to get over the grief and trauma in your own time," she told AAP at the unveiling of a memorial bell at Kinglake West on Sunday afternoon. "But it does help to talk, it does help to come together and reflect on what's happened. But time does heal." "It's been an amazing day and ... whole 12 months for many of us. "There's been revelations and heartaches and a whole lot of things. "But I think most importantly it's seen communities come together just like today. "It's about family and friends and relationships and remembering those people you've lost." Ms Nixon said bushfire-affected victims had told her there had been a lot of tears but also a lot of laughter as they remembered last year's catastrophic events. "I think previously there was just lots of tears." Ms Nixon had earlier in the day spoken at a multi-faith service at St Paul's Cathedral in central Melbourne where she said there could be no under-estimating the "enormous pain, trauma and grief" thousands of Victorians had experienced since Black Saturday. Black Saturday will be forever etched: Rudd From: AAP | February 07, 2010 12:19PM www.theaustralian.com.au THE anniversary of the Black Saturday bushfires will forever be a day of mourning, but the federal government says it's also a day to reflect on the nation's tremendous strength. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, Families Minister Jenny Macklin, Attorney-General Robert McClelland and Parliamentary Secretary for Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction Bill Shorten this morning released a joint statement remembering the tragedy one year on. February 7 will be forever etched in the nation's memory as a day of mourning but also one of tremendous spirit and inspiration, it read. The tragedy brought out the best of the Australian character and inspired countless acts of bravery and generosity. The worst natural disaster since Federation, Victoria's Black Saturday bushfires claimed 173 lives and destroyed more than 2000 homes. Mr Rudd and his colleagues said their thoughts were with the survivors of the disaster, whose quiet courage inspired the nation. AAP

Through every war ever fought by Aussies, their spirit has been well documented. It is mischievous, the fun loving larikins, always ready with a joke (usually at someone else's expense) and a smile. It is the spirit of mateship, to know the Soldiers around you will not falter and will never leave you behind. It is the spirit of tenacity, sheer grit and determination to get the job done or die trying. It is the knowledge that despite the conditions they will adapt and continue to fight. That the fight isn't over til the Diggers say so. Between March and December 1941, the Australian Government moved three militia battalions to Port Moresby to defend this vital northern gateway to Australia. The average age of these militia recruits was eighteen and a half years. Unlike the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), which had been recruited to fight the Germans and Italians in Europe and North Africa, the military service of the militia soldiers was strictly limited to the defence of Australia and its island Territories. To many in the AIF, who could not foresee Japan's entry into World War II on the side of Germany and Italy in December 1941, the militia wore the uniforms of soldiers but without the risk of ever being involved in combat. This distinction between AIF and militia service led to the young militia recruits being branded "chocolate soldiers" or "chocos" by some AIF members. The scornful term "choco" was intended to convey a suggestion that the militia recruits would melt ...

Designer is no slouch SMH | SPIKE Column | Edited by Andrew Hornery with Joel Gibson April 22, 2004 Loyal Spike readers may recall the Choc-Tanic - an entry in the Australian Design Awards in 2002 that was a marshmallow-filled chocolate replica of the Titanic, designed to float in cups of hot milk. As the ship melted it capsized and sank, like the real thing. The Choc-Tanic didn't make the finals, just as the chocolate Slouch Hat has failed to make the finals for this year's awards, to be announced tomorrow. The Slouch Hat is the creation of Mary-Ann Martinek, a retired major who served 20 years in the army. Martinek, from Melbourne, spent "12 or 13 years" thinking of ways to get the Anzac message across to school children. Then she hit on the idea of eight-gram chocolate slouch hats. "This product embodies a creative idea that is nationally significant," she said in her entry. "A slouch hat is known among soldiers as a sincere gift of friendship, and the most sincere gift that the Anzacs have given to us is their selflessness, courage and dedication to a national spirit that has forged a nation and that makes us look at ourselves when we are being beaten, telling us to fight on and to keep meeting each challenge we come to with some of that genetic personality that the Anzac and the Australian spirit have given to us." www.smh.com.au Mary-Ann Martinek is now turning her chocolate design skills to creating a range of koala bear chocolates
RIP Sam the Koala
SAM the koala, who became a worldwide symbol of hope in the aftermath of the Black Saturday bushfires, has died. She was expected to undergo surgery today to treat cysts as a result of urogenital chlamydiosis, a life-threatening disease that affects 50% of the koala population. Vet John Butler told waiting media outside Morwell Veterinary Clinic this afternoon that due to complications with the disease, the best course of action was to put Sam down. There are plans to have Sam stuffed and displayed in the Melbourne Museum.

'Koala Man' Dave Tree woke up this morning to find he'd made front-page news across the globe. NBC, Fox, CNN, even Ellen Degeneres have been on the phone, propelling Dave into the spotlight. The video of the Mirboo North resident stroking a singed koala was actually taken in the week leading up to the deadliest bushfires in Australian history, during preventative backburning operations. The main picture here is of Koala Sam, the picture that told the story of the Victorian fire tragedy to the world - the moment that CFA fireman David Tree gave Sam the koala a drink from his water bottle. Thirsty Sam had third degree burns to his paws and drank tree bottles of water after the fires, which killed more than 181 people, destroyed whole towns and burnt out thousands of hectares of land, raged through the state. But in one happy ending among all the horror stories, the saga of Sam and the fireman brought tears to the eyes of many. They were later reunited after Sam's burns were treated and then she was brought together with boyfriend Bob who was found wandering, dazed, among the burnt out bush. The human story of tragedy, triumph and miracle during the bushfires was mirrored in the animal world. Thousands died in the blazes, but hundreds more were saved, some by luck and some by people. The cost to the aimal population of the destroyed areass will never be fully known, but all species, from rabbits to roos, wombats to possums, dogs, cats and horses all suffered.
