"A major step toward equality" -- that's what gay rights advocates call a judge's ruling that strikes down Proposition 8, California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. And though the case is already likely on its way to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and possibly the US Supreme Court, those who support the judge's decision took this opportunity to celebrate.
SAN FRANCISCO -- (www.kesq.com A federal judge issued his ruling in a landmark case, overturning a ban on same-sex marriage. Chief US District Judge Vaughn Walker overturned the voter-approved ban known as Proposition 8, according to the court's e-filing website. His verdict comes in response to a lawsuit brought by two same-sex couples and the city of San Francisco seeking to invalidate the law as an unlawful infringement on the civil rights of gay men and lesbians. Proposition 8, which outlawed gay marriages in California five months after the state Supreme Court legalized them, passed with 52 percent of the vote in November 2008 following the most expensive campaign on a social issue in US history. Attorneys on both sides have said an appeal was certain if Walker did not rule in their favor. The case would go first to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals then the Supreme Court if the high court justices agree to review it. Anticipating such a scenario, lawyers for the coalition of religious and conservative groups that sponsored Proposition 8 in 2008 filed a legal brief Tuesday asking Walker to stay his decision if he overturns the ban so same-sex couples could not marry while an appeal was pending. Watch live feed from outside the federal courthouse in San Francisco "Same-sex marriages would be licensed under a cloud of uncertainty, and should proponents succeed on appeal, any such marriages would be invalid," they wrote. Walker presided over a 13-day trial earlier ...
Nostalgia episode 7 Midtown Madness 2 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- MM2 Wiki The game features Blitz, Checkpoint, Circuit, Sniper, Death Match, and Cruise modes, which are all derived from the original Midtown Madness game. Winning Blitz, Checkpoint and Circuit races allows you to unlock new vehicles and paint jobs. The Cruise mode lets you roam freely around the two open world recreations of London and San Francisco. A Crash Course can be completed in each of the cities. The Cab Driving School in London follows an extremist view of a London Cab driver, where a player must complete objectives in a London cab. The Stunt Driver course in San Francisco allows the player to gain experience in stunt driving for a Hollywood movie, using the Ford Mustang Fastback. Players can change variables which affect the vehicle's performance and visual appearance of the game before starting a race, such as the weather and time of day. Additionally, police vehicles frequency can be modified, as with the amount of traffic and pedestrians. Every race or cruise would begin with someone commenting. These commenters would also be heard at the end of a race (not a cruise) saying something that depends on your position upon finishing. The commenters would be different for each race, and they are different for each city (ie someone commenting in San Francisco would not be heard in London, or vice versa). These include for San Francisco: a newscaster, a ...
Constance Foore "Connee" Boswell (December 3, 1907, Kansas City, Missouri -- October 11, 1976, New York, NY) was an American female vocalist born in Kansas City but raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. With her sisters, Martha and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell, she performed in the 1930s as The Boswell Sisters and became a highly influential singing group during this period via recordings and radio. Connee herself is widely considered one of the greatest jazz female vocalists and was a major influence on Ella Fitzgerald who said, "My mother brought home one of her records, and I fell in love with it....I tried so hard to sound just like her."[1] In 1936, Connee's sisters retired and Connee continued on as a solo artist (having also recorded solos during her years with the group). The Boswells came to be well known locally while still in their early teens, making appearances in New Orleans theaters and radio. They made their first recordings for Victor Records in 1925, which included "Cryin' Blues" where Connee is featured singing in the style of her early influence, the African American singer Mamie Smith. The Boswell Sisters became stage professionals that year when they were tapped to fill in for an act at New Orleans' Orpheum Theatre. They received an invitation to come to Chicago and perform in 1928 and honed their act on the Western Vaudeville Circuit. When their tour ended they traveled to San Francisco. The hotel that had been recommended had a less than savory reputation ...

The theater, which had 1625 seats when it opened in 1926, was converted to twin theaters in 1976, reopened as a single screen in 1988, and closed as a movie theater on February 22, 1998. It was designated official San Francisco landmark #217 on February 21, 1996. In 2001 it was converted to Gorilla Sports gym -- the conversion to the gym has retained most of the interior detail.

On Monday, February 23rd the City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee of the Board of Supervisors heard public testimony on a resolution by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi requesting San Franciscos Congressional and State Legislative delegations to reform laws governing use of public, education and government (PEG) cable access system funds. San Franciscos public access television channels known as Access SF are threatened by significant funding cuts due to the expiration of local cable franchises that have provided operations funding for the channels. The funding expires on June 30, 2009 and could force the closure or greatly curtailed operations of the popular public access channels. THE MEETING ROOM was full so they put the overload into the main Board of Supervisor Chambers to view the meeting going on a few rooms down the hall. THIS VIDEO CLIP is Miss Dina Boyer, giving her 2-1/2 minutes testimony that I could only video tape off the close circuit TV.
New York--The Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board released Coast Guard footage today of the U.S. Airways passenger plane as it conducted an emergency landing into the Hudson River Jan. 15, 2009. The Coast Guard is conducting a safety zone around the plane, which is now located at Battery Park City, N.Y., while a commercial salvage team is working to remove the plane from the water. The Coast Guard, New York Police and Fire Departments, New York Waterways and Circle Line ferry rescue teams launched a multi-asset response yesterday when the plane ditched onto the Hudson River, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Upon initial notification, Coast Guard Sector New York launched a fleet of small rescue boats and the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Ridley was diverted to the scene. The Coast Guard Cutter Katherine Walker also arrived on scene to assist in the search and rescue efforts and enforcement of the safety zones. Three Coast Guard helicopters from Air Station Atlantic City, N.J., and one from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., worked closely with New York City Police air assets to provide aerial support. The video was captured by Coast Guard Vessel Traffic Service. The purpose of a VTS is to provide active monitoring and navigational advice for vessels in particularly confined and busy waterways. There are two main types of VTS, surveillance and non-surveillance. Surveillance systems consist of one or more land-based sensors (including radar, Automated Identification Systems and closed circuit television sites), which output their signals to a central location where operators monitor and manage vessel traffic movement. Non-surveillance systems consist of one or more reporting points at which ships are required to report their course, speed, and other data to the monitoring authority. The Coast Guard operates 12 Vessel Traffic Centers (VTC): Prince William Sound, Puget Sound, Valdez, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles/Long Beach, Houston-Galveston, Berwick Bay, Louisville, Saint Mary's River, Port Arthur, Tampa, and New York.
