Director Merle Becker crosses the country interviewing rock poster artists from the different eras to discover that America is currently in the midst of a 21st century "rock poster art movement", where thousands of artists around the country are doing silk screened rock poster art inspired by their local scene, the music of our time, and the spirit of our era. The film explores the history rise of the current rock poster movement in America, and features a cast of quirky / interesting, and extremely talented rock poster artists, talking about their work, and telling the story of their underground art movement. Beginning in the 1960s in San Francisco with the birth of the dance concert, a rock poster accompanied almost every show that was put on during that era. Soon, people began pulling the posters off of the telephone poles, almost as quickly as they were put up, and promoters such as Bill Graham started to give them out at the end of his shows to advertise the next week's show. The art, both beautiful and edgy, closely parallels the changes in American culture throughout the decades. "Posters" in the '80s were actually "flyers" done for punk shows on Xerox machines in local libraries, or at Kinko's. Six weeks ago WinStar Farm looked as though it would be without a starter in the upcoming Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Now, the powerful outfit could have three, the final potential starter coming thanks to a eye-catching, last-to-first victory by Advice in the $300000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) April 18 on the Keeneland Polytrack. WinStar, which has had two Derby starters in each of the past three years, also owns Lanes End Stakes (gr. II) winner Hold Me Back and California-based Mr. Hot Stuff. Both colts appear headed to Louisville. Advice, who had only a maiden win to show from five lifetime starts, broke from post 11 in the 1 1/16-mile Lexington, the final major Derby prep. Easy Goer won the $568000 Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct yesterday with a performance that may not have looked as impressive as his other triumphs but was actually at least as strong. The 3-year-old son of Alydar and Relaxing, making his final start before the Kentucky Derby on May 6, beat Rock Point by three lengths and was timed in 1:50 3/5 for the mile and an eighth, more than three seconds slower than the track record. The time and the margin may have left some fans a bit disappointed as they compared it with his previous effort, when he won the Gotham Stakes on April 8 by 13 lengths and set a track record of 1:32 3/5 for a mile. But the Aqueduct track was as unusually slow today as it was unusually fast for the Gotham, and Easy Goer's seemingly ordinary time translates to just as good an effort. More important, Easy Goer was winning beyond a mile and around two turns for the first time in his career, and he did so with no loss of effectiveness. Sunday Silence scored a two-and-a-half-length upset victory over Easy Goer in the 115th Kentucky Derby today at Churchill Downs, but the only thing that seemed right about the race was that the two best colts beat the others. This had shaped up as an extraordinarily good Derby, a virtual match race between two special colts, and those with a piece of Sunday Silence or a bet on him were delighted by the outcome.
