Ramesh Raskar: An Immigrant's Story Big Think Editors on September 30, 2011, 2:04 PM What's the Latest Development? Born to a family of farmers in India, Ramesh Raskar was first inspired to pursue computer graphics after seeing the special effects of Jurassic Park. His story is not an unfamiliar one for a first generation immigrant: "Nobody on my father's or mother's side of the family has even a high school education. But my father, being an electronics engineer, made sure all his children focused on education rather than farming." Since getting his Ph.D. in North Carolina, he has worked at the MIT media lab creating revolutionary new electronic devices. What's the Big Idea? Among the devices he has invented is a four-flash camera that enables the kind of sketching familiar to most from the 1985 music video for the hit pop song "Take on Me" by the Norwegian band A-Ha. Currently he is working on a camera that can see around corners: "It bounces ultrashort bursts of laser light off a rigid surface‚ÄĒthe wall opposite an open door, for instance‚ÄĒat several different angles and measures the time it takes the light to return to the camera." In order for the camera to measure the flight time of light particles, it must take a trillion exposures a second. A proposed plan to teach Hong Kong kids about China is causing uproar. Hong Kong parents and education groups say the planned "National Education" course glorifies the Chinese Communist Party, while whitewashing its failures and amounts to "brainwashing" school students. To make their concerns heard, an estimated 30000 to 90000 Hong Kong residents marched against the proposed course. Parents in particular want the Hong Kong government to scrap the course before school starts in September. In this China Focus we look at why the course sparked such strong reactions, and what this means for the Chinese regime's efforts to bring Hong Kong closer within its control. Video Interview: Rebecca Henderson of Harvard Business School at the New Economics Institute Strategies for a New Economy Conference Recorded live at the New Economics Institute Strategies for a New Economy Conference on June 9, 2012, Co-Director of the Business & Environment Initiative at Harvard Business School Rebecca Henderson speaks about how her work at Harvard is helping recast business education to integrate issues such as resource constraints into curricula. "For years, we've run businesses as if social capital was free, and natural capital was very very cheap, and that is going to change going forward -- this is a major reality that all business school students should be aware of," says Henderson. Henderson also speaks of "reawakening the sense of business' social mission and the difference business can make." "It's sometimes fashionable in the new economy movement to say that business is corrupt or business is evil, but I don't share that view at all," Henderson says. "I think a business that's well run is an enormous instrument for human good and a major source of prosperity and freedom -- business is a part of the solution, playing a partnership role with civil society and government so that we build an economy that's in balance with the social and natural worlds." Learn more about Marin Waldorf School's approach to media through this short film. Our experience, as a school and as a movement, is that popular culture, especially as expressed through various forms of media, overwhelms children's thinking and imagination. We make a conscious effort to quiet pop culture and media awareness in order to make room for the development of intellectual curiosity and a healthy and authentic sense of self. Waldorf education strives to awaken a children's excitement and enthusiasm for learning through a curriculum rich in academic and artistic expression.

After over 300 of us staged a student walkout on Wednesday April 25, 2012, over 150 of us were given 5-day suspensions. One of our fellow students, targeted as the "ring-leader" is being threatened with formal charges for helping organize the walkout. We were walking out in solidarity with our fellow students at Southwestern High School to save their school from closing. More importantly, we were also fighting for quality education for us at Western, and at ALL DPS schools. We do not understand why we are being punished with a loss of educational opportunity when that is exactly what we were fighting for. To further demonstrate our commitment to education, we will be attending our own school taught by ourselves and community educators for the duration of our suspension. We are still looking for more teachers and students. Contact us if you want to help ...
