Surviving Katrina is a groundbreaking television event, set in New Orleans during and immediately after Hurricane Katrina strikes. The program blends human drama, the most meticulous techniques of documentary and state-of-the-art special and computer effects to produce a gripping minute by minute explanation of what happened through the true-life experiences of eye witnesses. Surviving Katrina also reveals the behind-the-scenes story of how the response of the local and federal governments failed the people of New Orleans in their greatest time of need. It answers the big questions. How could the evacuation of a major US city be so badly managed? How could New Orleans flood so catastrophically despite the many warnings and drills? How could real help be so slow in coming? But amid the chaos and between the lines of the 24-hour news coverage were thousands of acts of bravery, kindness and self-sacrifice. In capturing the true story of what took place during one of the most dramatic weeks in American history, Surviving Katrina brings these inspiring stories to life - contrasting the failure of political leadership with the experiences of men and women who found qualities of courage and leadership in themselves.

Feds Say They've Solved 9/11 Mystery By DEVLIN BARRETT , AP posted: 31 MINUTES AGO comments: 33 filed under: National News PrintShare Text SizeAAA GAITHERSBURG, Md. (Aug. 21) - Federal investigators said Thursday they have solved a mystery of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks: the collapse of World Trade Center building 7, a source of long-running conspiracy theories. The 47-story trapezoid-shaped building sat north of the World Trade Center towers, across Vesey Street in lower Manhattan. On Sept. 11, it was set on fire by falling debris from the burning towers, but skeptics have long argued that fire and debris alone should not have brought down such a big steel-and-concrete structure. What Brought Down World Trade Center 7? The smoldering wreckage of World Trade Center 7, Sept. 18, 2001Roberto Borea, AP Federal investigators said Thursday they have resolved a lingering question from the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks: What caused World Trade Center 7 to collapse? They determined the building, which sat north of the World Trade Center towers, was brought down by fire started by debris from the twin towers. 1 of 5PHOTOS AOL News X | Close Scientists with the National Institute of Standards and Technology say their three-year investigation of the collapse determined the demise of WTC 7 was actually the first time in the world a fire caused the total failure of a skyscraper. "The reason for the collapse of World Trade Center 7 is no longer a mystery," said Dr. Shyam Sunder, the lead investigator on the NIST team. Investigators also concluded that the collapse of the nearby towers broke the city water main, leaving the sprinkler system in the bottom half of the building without water. The building has been the subject of a wide range of conspiracy theories for the last seven years, partly because the collapse occurred about seven hours after the twin towers came down. That fueled suspicion that someone intentionally blew up the building in a controlled demolition. Critics like Mike Berger of the group 9/11 Truth said he wasn't buying the government's explanation.

Todos os seus três filhos são também cantores: Dori Caymmi, Danilo Caymmi e Nana Caymmi.SAO PAULO - Brazilian composer and singer Dorival Caymmi, who catapulted to fame when Carmen Miranda performed one of his songs in 1938, died Saturday. He was 94. He died of kidney cancer and multiple organ failure in his Rio de Janeiro home, his granddaughter Stela Caymmi told the Globo TV network. "He had been undergoing treatment for some years," she said. Mr. Caymmi's lyrics were inspired by the beautiful women and folklore of the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia, where he was born. A deep, velvety voice also helped make him one of the country's most beloved artists. "His music is part of the nation's cultural heritage," President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil said Saturday in a statement. During his 60-year career, Mr. Caymmi made close to 20 records and composed more than 100 songs, including "O que e que a Baiana tem" which was immortalized by Miranda. In 1984, Mr. Caymmi was awarded France's Order of Arts and Letters. His song "Das Rosas" was translated into English as "And Roses and Roses" by American lyricist Ray Gilbert and sung by Andy Williams and Perry Como, among others. Born in Salvador, Bahia, in 1914, Mr. Caymmi moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1937. In 1940, while taking part in a local radio station's amateur hour show, he met singer Stella Maris, whom he married the same year. Their sons Dori and Danilo and daughter, Nana, are all prominent musicians who got their start accompanying their father on the stage and in the recording studio.Dorival Caymmi, a Brazilian singer and songwriter who helped lay the foundations of bossa nova, wrote Carmen Miranda's first hit and gave legendary voice to the romance of the beaches, fishing villages and bathing beauties of his native Bahia, died on Saturday at his home in Rio de Janeiro. He was 94.he cause was multiple organ failure, according to accounts in the Brazilian news media. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Brazil's president, praised him as "one of the founders of Brazilian popular music." Mr. Caymmi's career encompassed 60 years and about 20 albums, the last one released four years ago. But his influence transcended such measurable milestones and found enduring expression in the music of Brazilian greats like Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.In an introduction to an anthology of Mr. Caymmi's work in 1994, Jobim, the driving force behind bossa nova, a sophisticated jazz derived from samba, wrote: "Dorival is a universal genius. He picked up the guitar and orchestrated the world." From the beginning of his career, Mr. Caymmi musically imbued his country with a rhythmic, romantic that went well with Brazil's enticing geography and sultry, bikini-clad women. His first and immediately popular song, written at 16, "O Que É Que a Baiana Tem?" ("What Is It About Bahian Women?"), set the tone. That song became the first hit of Carmen Miranda, whose well-displayed limbs, extravagant hats and exuberant voice made her a global sensation as the Brazilian Bombshell. In 1996, the publication News From Brazil said Mr. Caymmi taught Ms. Miranda to move her arms and hands with the music, which became her trademark.Songs like "Marina" (1944) and "O Samba da Minha Terra" (1941) inspired the greats of bossa nova.
A rare moment of Media Accountability. In this discussion with Amy Goodman, Jeremy Scahill and senior analyst at Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR), Steve Rendall, Aaron Brown is taken to task for his network's coverage of the war in Iraq and the voices that opposed it. CNN and the rest of the American media were roundly criticized for their failure to objectively cover the U.S. war against Iraq both in the weeks leading up to the invasion and the invasion itself. The mainstream media subordinated itself to the role of bullhorn for Bush officials and other pro-war personalities rarely giving equal time to those who opposed the war. It rarely, if ever, challenged the Bush Administration's claims about the intelligence it had on Iraq. It never mentioned the bitter divisions within the U.S. Intelligence community over the ways in which Bush officials were using the data on Iraq. It largely ignored the vocal debate among intelligence analysts over the information Iraqi opposition leader Ahmed Chalabi and defectors linked to him provided to the Pentagon. Nor did it give any ink to the finding of the IAEA, after weeks of intensive inspections, that there was no evidence Iraq intended to resume its nuclear program. Perhaps just as egregious a failure was the mainstream media's non-coverage of the anti-war movement which numbered in the millions and staged hundreds of massive protests worldwide against the impending invasion of Iraq. Who knows what course history might have taken had any of their voices and protests been given fair coverage by the New York Times, CNN or NBC Nightly News. Once the invasion started, the mainstream/corporate press made only infrequent fleeting mention of Iraqi civilian casualties focusing instead on the weaponry and soldiers used to inflict them. News networks employed brigades of retired U.S. generals to talk about tactics, arms and munitions incessantly but never employed doctors, human rights experts or aid organization spokespeople to discuss the human cost these military particulars exact. As usual, the BBC is twisting and distorting the news coming out of the Georgia region. We keep being told that around 1500 have been killed in Georgia, the inference being that this has resulted from Russian bombing. Not so, the casualties are in Ossetia. All we are getting is one-sided reports of the destruction being caused by the Russians.Full Digg post: http://digg.com/political_opinion/Media_Disinformation_Distorts_News_from_the_Georgia_Region

It shows that the U.S. corporate-controlled mainstream media believe it has the right to deny the American people news that is highly important to them. This cannot stand, and if we let them know it is being noticed, will not stand. Congressperson Kucinich has specifically requested this: Considering all he has done and continues to do for us, perhaps that is not too much to ask... Contact the major news organizations and INSIST they fully cover and report on the Judiciary hearings. If enough of us do, they will not dare ignore it as they currently plan to do; and as they have all other Impeachment news to date. The Media Research Center's Culture and Media Institute says no. For more on what this study reveals, watch Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Media Institute. The Institute examined the apparent "rise in atheism," subject covered in broadcast news programs, three leading weekly news magazines, and four programs on taxpayer-funded National Public Radio, all shown during 2007. Gospel of Godlessness Although only eight percent of Americans call themselves atheists, the report found that not only is the news media hostile toward religion, particularly Christianity, but the media may be spreading a "Gospel of Godlessness" on the American public. "Whether deliberately or not, the news media did not subject atheism or atheists to the same skepticism to which they subject Christians and Christianity," the report said. "Journalists who look at America's majority religion through a skeptical prism should equally apply their critical faculties to atheism." In their report, CMI details their discovery of imbalances in the media's coverage of the religion. Among the findings: - Eighty percent of feature stories about atheism or atheists had a positive tone, 20 percent were neutral. No feature stories were negative. - Atheists were used to challenge religious viewpoints more than journalists used religious viewpoints to challenge atheism. Fifty-four percent of atheist-themed stories included a religious counterpoint, but 71 percent of the Christian-themed stories included atheist counterpoints or were written from an atheistic perspective. Double Standard "By airing unchallenged interviews and reporting predominantly positive-toned features, the news organizations in this study effectively promoted atheism and held it in higher regard than other religions," the report said. "While the media are not obligated to treat all religions and belief systems equally, their failure to subject atheism to the levels of skepticism directed at Christianity and other religions suggests a deplorable double standard. The study also found that atheism stories or commentaries by atheists were present in 51 percent of the issues of Newsweek, and 35 percent of the issues of Time. This included features, mentions in stories on other issues, and groupings of letters to the editor from atheists. In contrast, only one issue of U.S. News and World Report referred to atheism. Of all of the broadcast networks, the Institute found that ABC provided the most enthusiastic television network coverage of atheism. The network ran features on an atheist Web site called Blasphemy Challenge and an atheist convention held in Baltimore, Md. ABC addressed atheism 24 times in five of its six news programs, whereas CBS and NBC only addressed it 16 and 11 times, respectively. In addition to airing more stories on the subject than CBS and NBC, ABC's Nightline devoted an entire program to a live debate between atheists and Christians. Even the presidential race has been touched by atheism. Six out of seven news organizations considered in this study addressed the concerns and interests of atheists in the upcoming presidential election. Yet, only Republican candidates were asked how they would treat atheists.

On Tuesday, May 27, several mainstream media outlets announced that major demolition of homes in Cashell Estates would take place beginning today, May 28. When mainstream media trucks showed up today, NO demolition took place, at least as of 3 PM. ************************************************ UPDATE: Channel 9 news just ran(at 11:20PM May 28) footage showing demolition of one of the three houses-unknown if this was done in the morning before other media trucks showed or on Friday before what appears to be the same machine "broke" and was "worked on" where it sat on a debris pile in a Washington Post photo from Friday In addition, Audubon Naturalist Society protesters were shown on-site, presumably morning or noon. I was there about 3 PM and saw crews working only on that hill. ************************************************ As of now, it looks like three houses and a garage are down and the rest are still standing, protected by a mechanical failure or by a "mechanical failure" induced by media coverage. Over the weekend, the Washington Post had run a story on how the "epidemic movie," ghost town aspect of Cashell Estates after eminent domain. In it, they claimed remaining residents are desperate to see the boarded-up, stolen homes demolished because of squatters and salvagers. The Post is known to support the ICC, so "selective interviews" should not be ruled out. In the article, the Post showed an excavator sitting on a pile of debris that was once a family home-and the caption claimed it was BROKEN and being worked on as of Friday! Here's the thing-it is now Wednesday, and that excavator is STILL sitting on that same smashed debris pile-with no signs of any further mechanical repairs being attempted. Is it really broken-or is the contractor's nerve broken instead, unwilling to smash down former family homes while TV cameras are rolling? So far they have prevented any media outlet I have seen from getting a live-action shot of a house coming down under demolition. On Wednesday, May 28, ICC crews were using other, different equipment to work on the hill overlooking the Redland Road temporary bypass and ignoring the beseiged, abandoned homes of Cashell Estates altogether. Perhaps ABC 7 and News Channel 8 have effectively put the monkeywrench to that supposedly broken excavator? I saw NO sign of the oil stains, scattered tools, open panels, and boxes of parts normally associated with mechanical repairs. At the very least you would think that if that machine was damaged by the house it was smashing it would have been towed off the pile by now so it could be repaired on flat ground and in the shade-not on unsteady ground in the full sun! I have repaired many cars, bikes, and other mechanical things in my time and always when I have had to wait for parts I have left them as they were when the parts were ordered, so as to avoid additional reassembly and disassembly when they finally Do arrive. Besides, a call on Friday to Caterpiller(or whoever) could surely have put any moderate-side broken part on a plane to arrive by Saturday! Immediately behind Cashell Estates is a beautiful patch of woods with an elegant but empty and doomed house standing in it-protected by a stream that cannot be put in culverts until July Perhaps ABC 7 and News Channel 8 have effectively put the monkeywrench to that supposedly broken excavator? I saw NO sign of the oil stains, scattered tools, open panels, and boxes of parts normally associated with mechanical repairs. At the very least you would think that if that machine was damaged by the house it was smashing it would have been towed off the pile by now so in a culvert until July. Behind these woods is the community of Winter's Run, which will lose another home, two parcels of woods, and have their streets divided. After that, the ICC must dive into Rock Creek, and then cross open fields on its way to Muncaster Mill Road and a link-up with construction coming from Georgia Ave. *********************** I remain very curious about what happened Friday and today. Did supervisers order crews to finish the house they were on and then stop work each time media showed up? Were Friday's breakdown a hoax and the reassignment to bridge/hill work just another excuse to stop smashing homes before more news trucks could arrive?
http://www.infowars.com/ http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/05/mcclellan-on-bu.html McClellan On Bush's Version of the Truth: From Cocaine Rumors to Destructive Partisan Warfare May 28, 2008 8:34 AM Scott McClellan's new memoir on his White House days is harsh. The decision to invade Iraq "goes to an important question that critics have raised about the president: Is Bush intellectually incurious or, as some assert, actually stupid?" the former White House press secretary writes. "Bush is plenty smart enough to be president. But as I've noted his leadership is based more on instinct than deep intellectual debate." In 1999, at a hotel suite "somewhere in the Midwest," McClellan recalls the Bush mind when dealing with rumors that the then-Texas governor had used cocaine. Writes McClellan: "'The media won't let go of these ridiculous cocaine rumors,' I heard Bush say. 'You know, the truth is I honestly don't remember whether I tried it or not. We had some pretty wild parties back in the day, and I just don't remember.' "I remember thinking to myself, How can that be? How can someone simply not remember whether or not they used an illegal substance like cocaine? It didn't make a lot of sense." And yet, McClellan concludes, "I think he meant what he said in that conversation about cocaine. It's the first time when I felt I was witnessing Bush convincing himself to believe something that probably was not true, and that, deep down, he knew was not true. And his reason for doing so is fairly obvious — political convenience..." Bush "has a way of falling back on the hazy memory to protect himself from potential political embarrassment. In other words, being evasive is not the same as lying in Bush's mind...It would not be the last time Bush mishandled potential controversy. But the cases to come would involve the public trust, and the failure to deal with them early, directly and head-on would lead to far greater suspicion and far more destructive partisan warfare."
http://www.mediamattersaction.org/fearandloathing --------------------- Before serving as President and Chief Executive of NCLR, Janet Murguía began her career in Washington, DC as legislative counsel to former Kansas Congressman Jim Slattery. She then worked at the White House from 1994 to 2000, ultimately serving as deputy assistant to President Clinton, providing strategic and legislative advice on key issues. She served as deputy director of legislative affairs, managing the legislative staff and acting as a senior White House liaison to Congress. In 2007, Murguía was named to Poder magazine's "The Poderosos 100," Latino Leaders magazine's "101 Top Leaders of the Hispanic Community," and Hispanic magazine's "Powerful Latinos 2007." --------------------- Washington, D.C. -- Media Matters Action Network today released "Fear and Loathing in Prime Time: Immigration Myths and Cable News," a special report documenting the rhetoric surrounding illegal immigration heard almost daily on influential cable news channels. The report exposes how cable news overflows not only with vitriol regarding immigration, but also with a series of myths that feed viewers' unfounded resentments and fears. Leading the charge are CNN's Lou Dobbs, CNN Headline News' Glenn Beck, and Fox News' Bill O'Reilly, all of whom have played major roles in creating this anti-immigrant hysteria. "This report shows in startling detail how Dobbs, Beck, and O'Reilly serve up a steady diet of fear, anger, and resentment on the subject of illegal immigration," said Karl Frisch, a spokesman for Media Matters Action Network. "When they aren't demonizing undocumented immigrants with misleading claims, this trio of cable news bullies is advancing baseless urban legends and wild accusations targeting the immigrant community. CNN and Fox News need to answer for this -- failure to do so would be the height of irresponsible journalism and a disservice to the American public." The report discusses, in detail, two types of myths regarding immigration perpetuated on cable news. The first are the largest and most common myths, such as those about crime and undocumented immigrants, and the costs of illegal immigration in social services and taxes. The second are the urban legends, such as the purported conspiracy to take back the Southwest United States for Mexico and the supposed secret plan to construct a "NAFTA Superhighway" running from Canada to Mexico. Media Matters Action Network's analysis focuses on Dobbs, O'Reilly, and Beck. While hosts on other cable programs regularly discuss illegal immigration (particularly on Fox News, where it is a frequent topic on Hannity & Colmes and Special Report with Brit Hume), Dobbs, O'Reilly, and Beck are the key offenders. Among the hosts, Dobbs stands out as the most guilty of this recklessly irresponsible journalism. Fully 70 percent of the 2007 episodes of CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight included discussion of illegal immigration.

I remember very clearly the daily fearmongering led by FOX as they cheered for war with Iraq. The 24/7 images, sound effects, yelling and threatening were an ever-present drumbeat for war. We had to invade, and we had to invade now.. anyone who didn't see that was a traitor. They viciously attacked those of us who worked to get out the truth. You'd think that with the complete failure in Iraq, those days would be behind us. Sadly, you'd be wrong. FOX wants war with Iran. It's almost too ridiculous to believe, but it's shockingly real. We've already compiled over 4 hours of FOX footage... the same images, sound effects, yelling and threatening that led the U.S. to invade Iraq is happening right now to sell a war with Iran. They are saying the exact same things!! Here is the video evidence, side-by-side with what they said about Iraq. This time is different though. We're prepared, and we have the means to alert people to what FOX is doing. Everyone has seen the terrible tragedy and the awful price paid by so many Iraqis and Americans. We know this is coming, and we can stop it. It was about this time in the lead-up to the Iraq war when the other TV networks started following FOX's lead. As CNN's Christiane Amanpour says in the video, they were intimidated by FOX into cheerleading for the Iraq war. WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN AGAIN. This is a critical moment, and we must send a message to the major television networks urging them to ask tough questions, be skeptical, and tell us what is really happening. They must not follow FOX down the road to another war. We've put together an open letter to the networks. Will you sign it? Please pssst the video and forward it to everyone you know. We must raise our voices now. This is so important, we cannot let history repeat itself. P.S. Here are some recent articles on the Iran issue: "Cheney pushes Bush to act on Iran" (Guardian) "Prelude to an attack on Iran" (Bob Baer, Time) Bush admin labels Iran's 125k Revolutionary Guard troops "terrorists" (New York Times)
A media watchdog says that from broadcast to print, the news media seems to be spreading a "gospel of godlessness" to the American public through its imbalanced coverage of atheism. Only eight percent of Americans are atheist, according The National Cultural Values Survey conducted for the Culture and Media Institute in December 2006. But after noticing the ascendancy of atheism in stories on religion, Media Research Center's Culture and Media Institute sought to answer whether the news media gave atheism the same degree of scrutiny as Christianity and other faiths. After reviewing stories in 2007 that featured atheism or presented atheist viewpoints, the group found that the media not only gave atheism a more prominent voice in its coverage but also a favorable and even positive report. "Whether deliberately or not, the news media did not subject atheism or atheists to the same skepticism to which they subject Christians and Christianity," concluded CMI, according to a recent report compiled for Christian Broadcasting Network. "By airing unchallenged interviews and predominantly reporting positive-toned features, the news media effectively promoted atheism." From the 105 atheist-themed stories that CMI reviewed, eighty percent had a positive tone while 20 percent were neutral. Surprisingly, no feature stories were negative. The report also showed that only 54 percent of atheist-themed stories included a religious counterpoint compared to the 71 percent of the Christian-themed stories that included atheist counterpoints. Of the three leading news magazines -- Newsweek, Time, and U.S. News and World Report - reviewed for the report, Newsweek gave the most coverage on atheists, with a little over half of its issues featuring atheism stories or commentaries by atheists. The most striking example of Newsweek's imbalanced coverage, according to the report, was a story it ran in its May 14 issue, detailing Christopher Hitchens' critique on a book about Mother Teresa's spiritual struggles, entitled "Come By My Light." Hitchens is the author of "God is Not Great." For television networks, CMI examined ABC, CBS and NBC. The group found that ABC gave the most enthusiastic coverage on atheism stories, leading other networks by covering the topic 25 times last year, compared to 16 for CBS and 11 for NBC. One notable segment that ran on ABC's "Nightline" featured an atheist group that set up a Web site called "Blasphemy Challenge," in which they dare people to commit what the Bible terms the "unforgivable sin" of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. The segment, which aired May 9, led to a full program featuring a debate about the existence of God. In another segment, the network also covered an atheist convention in Baltimore, Md. While CMI acknowledged in the report that the media is not obligated to give equal treatment to all religions, it said the failure to subject atheist to the same scrutiny as Christianity suggests a "deplorable double standard." The report implored reporters and journalists who cover atheism to present the topic fairly and accurately. "If reporters use prominent atheists to offer opposing views on religion themed stories, they should -- in equal measure -- invite leading believers to provide perspective on stories about atheism," the report advised. "Journalists who look at America's majority religion through a skeptical prism should equally apply their critical faculties to atheism." Source: http://www.christianpost.com/
***SPIRITUS CONTRA SPIRITUM*** Many don't realize that the COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUSNESS of America has been manipulated...we have been tricked into believing evil resides in the caves of third-world countries. The true evil is the way manner in which the government, mainstream media & the controlling corporate & banking elite have manipulated us into projecting a false fear (of terror) across the globe. America has lost it's soul -- and you can blame the churches, the school administrators & everyone else that stood by and let these fascists take control of our money supply (& eventually our country)! They bomb nations without cause -- spending over $400 million per day as the defense contractors and politicans steal from us. It doesn't feel like stealing but those trillions of dollars are destroying the value of YOUR DOLLARS! It takes more of YOUR DOLLARS to buy things because their dollars have circulated into our system of fiat currency. The fractional banking system is a fraud set up for ultimate failure...just like out fiat money supply system. NOBODY will tell the masses of Americans -- who would give up such a huge cash-cow...unless we make them leave! The only way to stop this is to break the COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUSNESS!
Editor and Publisher Editor Greg Mitchell, whose new book, So Wrong for So Long: How the Press, the Pundits--and the President--Failed on Iraq talks about the failure of the news media to report critically on the war in Iraq is calling on reporters to be more skeptical of their sources. Mitchell says reporters were too quick to parrot the pronouncements of those providing them information without first vetting what they were being told. Not only in the days leading to the war in Iraq. But after the war began. He made his call to action during his appearance on News Talk Online on Paltalk. Mitchell believes the tendency to mislead reporters is not limited to Republicans. He says everything said by politicians on either side of the aisle should be carefully scrutinized by reporters as they prepare their stories
