Senegal Statue has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
Ben's first political talk... In French he talks about the first weekend of April 2010 in Dakar. Saturday was the inauguration of the controversial African Renaissance statue. Sunday was the 50th Independence Day. Bravo Senegal!

SENEGAL - Senegal inaugurated a colossal multi-million dollar statue marking 50 years of independence at a lavish ceremony Saturday amid mass protests by opposition groups calling for President Abdoulaye Wades resignation.
Senegal marked its 50th anniversary of Independence Sunday. The highlight of a weekend of celebrations was the inauguration of a giant statue in the capital. VOA's Scott Stearns reports Senegal's President says it is a monument to Africa's future. Critics say it is an offensive waste of money.
The African Renaissance, a copper monument larger than the Statue of Liberty, erected in Senegal as a symbol of a brighter future for Africa. Critics call its 28 million dollar price tag a waste of money, particularly in a country with poor infrastructure and high unemployment. The opposition was quick to denounce it. [Talla Syla, Opposition Leader]: The statue is not a priority for Senegal. To be clear, the priorities for the Senegalese is to help the population in flooded areas to get them out of the water, their feet out of the water. Simply put, we need to create the conditions to help the Senegalese to get a better life, to get housing, to get food, to get clothing, to help the numerous children of this country get education. The priority of this country is health, the priority of this country is security." At the inauguration ceremony, attended by about 30 African and other heads of state, Senegalese President Aboulaye Wade said he hoped it would be a symbol of African unity. [Abdoulaye Wade, Senegal President]: "Five centuries of ordeals and human tragedy, and yet Africa has arrived in the 21st century standing tall and more ready than ever to take its destiny into its hands." The notion of an African Renaissance came to the fore in the 1990s amid optimism the continent could shake off the effects of colonialism and Cold War-era meddling by world superpowers.

www.timesofearth.com DAKAR — Senegal has unveiled a multi-million dollar statue marking 50 years of independence, with 19 African heads of state attending the ceremony which sparked mass protest by opposition members. The 50-metre sculpture of a man, a woman and an infant has been criticised for its cost and a Muslim leader has issued a fatwa against it, branding it "un-Islamic". Abdoulaye Wade, the Senegalese president, was joined on Saturday by scores of dignitaries for the opening ceremony. Notable dignitaries included Bingu wa Mutharika, the Malawian and African Union president, and Jean Ping, the head of the African Union Commission. The presidents of Benin, Cape Verde, Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania and Zimbabwe were also among those present. A delegation from North Korea - which built the statue - and a delegation of 100 African-Americans, including Reverend Jesse Jackson and Senegalese-American singer Akon, attended the ceremony. At the same time, thousands of demonstrators marched in the capital Dakar to demand Wade's resignation over the Soviet-style bronze monument. Protesters included Ousmane Tanor Dieng, the head of the opposition Socialist Party, Macky Sall, a former prime minister, and Moustapha Niasse, a former foreign minister. "But President Abdoulaye Wade has conceived this idea to make it one of the best monuments in the world and because the North Koreans are known to be some of the best experts in that he decided to ...

The 50-metre sculpture of a man, a woman and an infant has been criticised for its cost and a Muslim cleric has issued a fatwa against it, branding it "un-Islamic. Critics say the sculpture is not only sexist and offensive, but in a country with widespread poverty, a waste of taxpayers money.
