Peng Peng is an important part of life at the Australian pavilion..... Peng Peng the kookaburra will begin making regular appearances in and around Shanghai - something ...to look out for. Peng Peng will be at the Australian pavilion regularly, welcoming our visitors as they arrive, posing for photos with them, and sharing his cheery chuckle with people of all ages..... The Australian pavilion launched its bilingual website (www.australianpavilion.com) last May as the primary venue for Chinese and Australian audiences to keep up to date.... www.chinadaily.com.cn Peng Peng, the Australian pavilion's kookaburra mascot, is a cheeky little bird, who loves having fun. He's a very early riser and always wakes up in a good mood, so good in fact that sometimes he can't help but laugh. He lives in a big park in the middle of the city, with his mother, father and sister. He looks forward to visiting his grandparents in the Australian bush and likes to spend his summer holidays at the beach. He's studying Chinese at school and learning about Chinese history and culture. When he grows up, he wants to be an architect so he can design amazing buildings like the pavilions at the Shanghai World Expo..... www.australianpavilion.com Remember that Kookaburra naming contest we told you about that the Australian Pavilion was holding? Someone won it. Haibao's new BFF from Down Under is now called Peng Peng (鹏鹏) Commissioner General for the Australian pavilion, Peter Tesch, said, "We feel ...

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd congratulates China on Shanghai Expo with fluent Chinese..... altho the Australian Pavilion website not only lacks 'imagination' but is a blatant series of lies + delusional fantasies, especially given the recent scandals in racism + the international student fiasco + the pathetic state of public transport in Australian cities, uhh (A truly sickening veneer of shallow dishonesty + hypocrisy.....) Australia's national pavilion will showcase Australian innovation, creativity and achievement to some 7 million visitors mostly from mainland China - an average of 38000 people on each of the 184 days of the expo .....From 1 May to 31 October 2010..... (But a 'dog's breakfast' of style, duh!) As a whole, the pavilion and its programs will respond to the expo's 'Better City, Better Life' theme by focusing on Australia's cities - many consistently ranked as among the world's most liveable - and our smart solutions for urban living..... www.australianpavilion.com (Oh, Anglos R living in the past, uhh!) Australians are widely admired as open, friendly and welcoming, which is not surprising, given the globally integrated nature of the modern Australian economy and the significant role which immigrants play in our multicultural society. The diversity of our modern communities is evident in the languages spoken in our homes and workplaces, in our cultural festivals, and in the innovative fusion of flavours and styles.... www.australianpavilion.com ...
The World Expo is opening in the Chinese city of Shanghai - the first time a developing country has hosted the event. Chinese state media says the country has spent much more on the event than was spent on the Beijing Olympics. At least 70 million visitors - almost all of them Chinese - are expected to visit pavilions and exhibitions staged by more than 240 countries and organisations from around the world. But it is hard to say for certain these days what a World Expo is for. In the past they were used to promote a country's strength as a world power. The first one - the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace in London in 1851 - was designed to demonstrate Britain's industrial, military and economic superiority. To China, this year's Shanghai World Expo is no less important. It is an opportunity, officials say, to promote China's "soft power" - to show off its growing influence in the world - and, of course, for others to try to win favour with the Chinese.

Mr. Zhao Zhenge, Deputy Director General, Exhibition Department, CCPIT & Deputy Director General, Liaison Office, Expo Shanghai 2010, is interviewed @ Open Day for World Expo 2020. It takes a great effort to win the bid for a world expo. To guarantee success, you need strong support from the government and enthusiastic support from the people. China conducted extensive research to determine the level of public support for our bid and discovered that almost 95% were in favor. The government was very supportive. When we made our bid presentations to BIE and its members, very senior government officials led the bid delegations, using their connections to gain support for China. China views the world expo as a grand event and gathering of nations, providing an ideal opportunity to promote our countrys image to the world and to enhance diplomatic relations with world leaders. Shanghai will also enjoy great world exposure, particularly as we are trying to develop our city as an important financial and maritime center. Download full VDO: www.tceb.or.th

Cinematography by Jakob Montrasio Editing by Skyscraper Museum Shanghai today is a vast metropolis, physically transformed by the twin emblems of the modern city, high-rises and highways. In the historic core, Puxi, skyscrapers of 30 to 60+ stories have replaced traditional lane housing and low-rise neighborhoods. In the new district of Pudong, on the east side of the Huangpu River, a master plan dictates taller towers rising from open green space. The climax of the Pudong skyline is a trio of iconic supertalls: Jin Mao, Shanghai World Financial Center, and Shanghai Tower (2014), expected to reach 632 meters to become the tallest building in China and second tallest in the world. The scale and speed of Shanghais rise reproduces and even surpasses Manhattans historic ascent in the early twentieth century. As the worlds largest city in 1930, New York boasted a population of nearly 7 million and some 200 skyscrapersmore than all other cities combined at that time. Today, as high-rises proliferate everywhere, Hong Kong holds the title with 7200. Still ascending, though, Shanghai is surely Chinas prophecy of the urban future. www.skyscraper.org

A comparison between the upcoming 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. This video is featured as part of the Skyscraper Museum's China Prophecy exhibition running from June 24, 2009 to Winter 2010. The theme of the Shanghai 2010 Expo, Better City, Better Life, focuses on improving the urban future through constructing modern infrastructure and creating parks and green space throughout the city. The virtual visit on this screen has been used for several years to promote Expo 2010. It was created by the Fairs planners with Crystal CG, the Chinese computer animation company that dominates the industry. Crystal CG also works with many architects to create impressive fly-overs of the city that insert their designers work into the existing Crystal model. The virtual tour of the Expo presents a vision of the future with strong parallels to the 1939 New Yorks Worlds Fair. The designers of Democracity and the Futurama imagined American cities in a car-based culture of efficient highways and widely-spaced skyscrapers surrounded by abundant open space. www.scmp.com Over 1500 car manufacturers descended on Shanghai last week for the city's hugely anticipated Auto Show. Despite car sales have slumped around the world, China still boasts a healthy appetite as sales in March reached 1.11 million, up from a year earlier. Western carmakers are increasingly eyeing the mainland market to compensate for losses in their home markets and luxury brands such as Porsche, Daimler-Benz and Rolls Royce displayed some of their finest hardware. The show, which is styled with an "art of innovation" theme, focused on the latest alternative-fuel vehicles and technologies. BYD's E6 is an all-electric vehicle which is hotly touted to take the world by storm with its long-lasting battery technology.
British singer Sarah Brightman attends a feature exhibition of China's Neolithic jades and bronze ware in London's British Museum, 29 Jan 2009. Sarah Brightman was officially named the Promotion Ambassador in Britain for the Shanghai 2010 World Expo Thursday at the opening ceremony of the exhibition. The British Museum celebrated the launch of the Shanghai Week in London on Thursday with the opening of "Treasures from Shanghai," a spectacular collection of 60 ancient Chinese jade and bronze masterpieces on show for the first time in Europe. "The Shanghai Museum houses one of the world's greatest collections of Chinese art," said Jessica Rawson, guest curator of the exhibition. "This exhibition brings to London pieces of superlative quality rarely seen outside China itself. The Neolithic jades on display are astonishing, particularly those that feature fine designs of strange human-like figures, birds and monsters with large teeth," said Rawson. Chen Kelun, deputy director general of the Shanghai Museum, said this exhibition "will gain insights into the time-honored urban civilization and etiquette of China, and identify themselves with the theme of the World Expo 2010." The "Treasures from Shanghai," which was scheduled to last one month, serves another example of the museum's collaboration with China after the exhibition "First Emperor: China's Terracotta Army" in 2007. The Shanghai Week, designed to commemorate the increasingly close relationship between Britain and ...

"Revolving boundaries": this is the title of the artist-in-residence-program promoted and sponsored by the GALLERIA DELL'ARCO in Italy and China. The program is articulated as follows: each year two foreign artists will spend a period of study in Shanghai and two Chinese artists will be instead guests of the Italian gallery. There they will be requested to produce a site-specific works of art, with strong ties to the territory. At the end of the in-residence-program, the results of their artistic research will be shown in an exhibition. The first foreign artist to be invited in Shanghai is Domenico Mangano, Italian, a renown presence on the national and international art scene. The ideas of migration, rotation, and evolution, in their material as well as in their abstract acceptions, are all contained in the expression "Revolving boundaries", shaped on one of the key features of the global cultural transformations. "Revolving boundaries" aims at investigating the territory through the foreigner and the occasional traveller's glance. The encounter between the territory and the outsider's cultural baggage and personal imaginary world, will allow him/her to gather suggestions and ideas to be transformed into a creation intended at debunking clichés. Domenico Mangano uses, as a procedural way of research, live recordings of lived experiences that he translates into video images and photographs, most of which are presented in sequential series. His research combines - without ...
