Lowri Ann Richards - opening scene to Snow White and The Dwarf. Queen Anastasia, a very wicked Queen indeed. Great show, great food, it was like stepping back in time. Very funny pantomime with a great plot written by Chris Emmett. The brainchild of Vincent Hayes, Brick Lane Music Hall was inspired by the popularity of the Lord Hood, where he was landlord in the 80s and regularly performed with his band of talented artists on an impromptu stage made from beer crates. Vincent resolved to bring music hall-style entertainment to a wider audience and in 1992 opened Brick Lane Music Hall in the former Trumans Brewery building in Londons famous Brick Lane, from where it takes its name. After a move to larger premises in Shoreditch, the Music Hall has finally settled in Silvertown, in the Royal Docks area, next to London City Airport. The building where the Music Hall is now housed is the former church of St Marks, built in the 1870s by Samuel Teulon, the acclaimed French architect. The building is of historic interest for its unique gothic brick exterior and the grace of its interior design. Having been deconsecrated in the 1980s the building could have been destroyed by fire had it not been for the weight of pigeon-muck on the roof which fell and quickly extinguished the flames! The building was carefully restored but then remained empty for many years before being offered as a distinguished home for Brick Lane Music Hall. A Grade II listed building, the exterior remains largely unchanged, while the interior has been tastefully refurbished to retain all of its former character, whilst housing a full stage, lighting and sound, a bar, offices and kitchen and all the conveniences of a modern-day theatre. Audiences are seated at tables in a cabaret-style arrangement. Evening audiences are treated to a three-course dinner before the show, afternoon audiences are served a full afternoon tea during the interval. Vincent leads most of the shows, with many of the artists who appeared at The Lord Hood, together with new performers, some from local colleges, and other experienced performers who come to enjoy the special atmosphere of Brick Lane Music Hall, where every show is unique and laughter is always top of the bill. http://www.bricklanemusichall.co.uk/

This is the Mimimyne stand at the East London Design Show, a great event celebrating East London designers and open to the public at Shoreditch Town Hall. It was a very busy weekend, and fun was had by all! Stars of the show were the cardboard Aeroplane by Paperpod and the Splat Chair by Spinifex, and the eco friendly carrier bags made by Carry-a-bag were popular purchases.
Julian Opie was born in London and raised in Oxford. After the Dragon School, Oxford, he spent some time at Magdalen College School,Oxford. He is a graduate of Goldsmiths College and achieved some early gallery success, which was an incentive for slightly younger artists in the same college, such as Damien Hirst to do likewise. His work, derived in part from Patrick Caulfield and Michael Craig-Martin, involves the reduction of photographs (or short films) into figurative reproductions (created using computer software). In his portraiture, the human face is characterised by black outlines with flat areas of colour, and minimalised detail, to the extent that an eye can become just the black circle of the pupil, and sometimes a head is represented by a circle with a space where the neck would be. Opie uses computers in art for other works. His Imagine you are... series, demonstrated how activities such as driving, walking and climbing could be represented by simple reductions. In addition, Opie uses sculpture and light installations to present items of everyday life. I am simply using that which is available to describe that which is experienced. Julian Opie's style was brought into the public eye when he was asked to design the cover for the British band, Blur's best of album. On the cover, the band members (clockwise from top left) Graham Coxon, Alex James, Dave Rowntree and Damon Albarn are transformed into Opie's style. Also, in 2005 and during Irish rock band, U2, Vertigo world tour, he showed another LED screen on part of stage set displaying an aimless walking man figure. Julian Opie also implements computer technology by cutting out the outlines and coloured shapes, sometimes on vinyl, as in large display banners at Tate Britain. Opie is a former trustee of the Tate Gallery and exhibits with Lisson Gallery and Alan Cristea Gallery in London. His studio and workshop is based in Shoreditch, London. He was the subject of a film by Illuminations in their the EYE series, in which they profile contemporary visual artists in Britain. He was also the subject of a book by Mary Horlock published by Tate Publishing as part of their Modern Artist series. Opie created a monument to singer Bryan Adams while he was in Indianapolis because he has a "FM-rock, big-open-sound, low-slung-guitar feel that was appropriate enough." He felt that this type of pose holds a similar sexuality that his works with women (such as his work with Kate Moss) have, though when he paints women they are often more blantantly sexually charged. [2] In 2008, the four-sided LED Sculpture Ann Dancing was installed in Indianapolis, Indiana as the first artwork on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. http://www.julianopie.com/
I presented my magazines 'Issue 09/re-edit' at Designersblock during the London Design festival. These magazines were displayed on a trolley within the their venue. This trolley enabled me to take my work through the whole exhibition space instead of having a fixed spot during the show. Next to this it gave me the freedom to present and sell my work on the sunday market on Bricklane (east London) during the show. In this way I expanded my own, as well Designersblock's exhibiting space onto the streets London's Shoreditch area. ©Henny Van Nistelrooy 2006 www.hennyvannistelrooy.com

Born in San Diego, California, RuPaul's youth was marked by the divorce of his parents at the age of seven.[1] He struggled as a musician and filmmaker in Atlanta during the 1980s. It was there that he participated in underground cinema, helping create the low-budget Starbooty (and an album by the same name). In Atlanta, RuPaul often performed at the infamous Celebrity Club (managed by Larry Tee) as a bar dancer or with his band, Wee Wee Pole, which included the late Todd Butler. He was famously the only drag queen allowed to dine in the venerable Majestic diner -- probably because he regularly tipped the wait staff. In the early 1990s, RuPaul became a fixture in the Georgia club scene, eventually voted "Queen of Manhattan" by area party promoters and DJs. He was often seen pushing a shopping cart outside of dance clubs, selling home-made postcards, and distributing flyers for upcoming events. It was during this time that he began performing under the name "RuPaul Charles". Initially participating in "genderfuck"-style performances, RuPaul performed solo and in collaboration with other bands at several New York nightclubs, most notably the Pyramid Club. He also appeared for many years at the annual Wigstock drag festival, and appears in the documentary Wigstock: The Movie. Also in the early 1990s, RuPaul became known in the UK through his appearances on the Channel 4 series Manhattan Cable, a weekly series presented by American Laurie Pike about New York's wild and wacky Public-access television system, in which RuPaul had become involved. Charles | Ru Paul | Ru Paul Charles | RuPaul Andre Charles | RuPaul Charles Union City Recordings Profile: Union City Recordings was an electronic music record label set up by Circa records in 1991/2 from their operations in West London. The label was managed by Rob Manly and specialised in deep house music which was popular in clubs at the time. The label's catalogue ran to 29 releases across the various formats of the time (12" vinyl singles, CD singles and one compilation album, Colours). The label is best remembered for releases by RuPaul and Sasha's first single, "Appolonia" (under the name "B.M. EX"). Other artists to record for the label include Manic, Sure is Pure and TC. The first releases had sleeves designed by Union Design of Shoreditch, but were later replaced by non-branded white label bags which were intended to increase popularity with DJs and specialist record stores like Black Market. http://www.discogs.com/release/411242 http://www.discogs.com/release/322886

The Designers Block is in a series of derelict buildings on Shoreditch High Street in London yards away from corporate headquarters and finance activity of the City of London. Somehow the power always gets turned on for the show, and DIY Kyoto found a way to measure it as it comes into their stand with the amazing Wattson device that can tell you how much energy you are using and how much it is costing you. Sarah Rich covered the unveiling of the Wattson box in April at the Milan Designers Block, but I caught up with Greta Corke in London after a hard weekend in their justifiably mobbed stand.
