Foreign Exchange (FX) Market analysis is a daily market overview and commentary Short Selling Ban Introduced Short selling of financial stocks has been banned in 4 key Eurozone nations for 15 days in a bid to halt the turmoil engulfing the financial markets. France, Italy, Belgium and Spain imposed the ban from today to combat volatility hitting banks such as Societe Generale. The ban has a different meaning across those 4 countries with Spain including all financial instruments such as credit default swaps, whilst in France it only covers the shorting of bank equities. The move has led to calmer markets with gains across the board. Once again, the European Union is coming under more selling pressure. This time it is the French banks that are feeling the heat. Earlier it was reported that some leading Asian banks have cut off credit lines to the large French banks, this could obviously lead to a French downgrade by the rating agencies. This news has sent the S&P 500 Index e-mini futures (ES U1) sharply lower again. New reports have said that the European Union is now considering banning short selling. If and when this happens it is usually a very big negative for the markets. When short sellers cover their positions they will help solid bottoms to be formed on the charts. Rarely, if ever, has banning short selling helped the markets, it did not help the US markets in 2008, and it will not help the European markets now. The stock markets in the United States have not had a two day winning streak since July 21, 2011.

Greece on Monday banned short selling on the stock market for two months, after shares on the Athens Stock Exchange plunged to their lowest level in more than 14 years as financial markets were buffeted by worries over the US economy following a downgrade of the country's debt. The bourse's general index sank below the 1000-point mark, closing down 6 percent at 998.24 -- the lowest level since January 1997. Less than an hour after the stock exchange closed, the Capital Market Commission imposed the two-month ban on short-selling, which comes into effect as of Tuesday. Short selling, a way of betting a financial asset will fall in price, typically involves traders selling borrowed shares in the hope of buying them cheaper later and profiting on the difference. The commission said in a statement it took the decision -after taking into account the exceptional circumstances prevailing in the Greek market.- It had imposed another two-month suspension of short-selling in April 2010, after a six day losing streak on the stock exchange. That ban had followed a downgrade of Greece's credit rating.
