Space shuttle Atlantis and its crew of seven astronauts ended an 11-day journey of nearly 4.5 million miles with a 9:44 am EST landing Friday at nasa's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission, designated STS-129, included three spacewalks and the installation of two platforms to the International Space Station's truss, or backbone. The platforms hold large spare parts to sustain station operations after the shuttles are retired. The shuttle crew delivered about 30000 pounds of replacement parts for systems that provide power to the station, keep it from overheating, and maintain a proper orientation in space.

Space shuttle Atlantis and its crew of seven astronauts ended an 11-day journey of nearly 4.5 million miles with a 9:44 am EST landing Friday at nasa's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
This landing wraps up a very successful Space Shuttle mission. The landing took place on November 27 at 9:44 am EST. Atlantis and the STS-129 crew orbited the earth 171 times for a mission duration of 11 days. This mission featured 3 also very successful spacewalks to outfit the International Space Station. The astronauts left 2 express Logistics Carriers and about a ton of supplies on the Station. All these parts will be critical for the time after the Shuttle's retirement. Coming home on this mission is Astronaut Nicole Stott, she spent 91 days in Space. This mission marks the last shuttle crew rotation flight to the ISS. All rights belong to NASA TV

www.spaceflightnews.net - The six-member crew of space shuttle Atlantis flew to Kennedy Space Center today in preparation for launch on mission STS-129 scheduled for November 16. Commander Charlie Hobaugh will lead the STS-129 mission to the International Space Station aboard space shuttle Atlantis. Barry Butch Wilmore will serve as the pilot. Mission Specialists are Bobby Satcher, Mike Foreman, Randy Bresnik and Leland Melvin. Wilmore, Satcher and Bresnik will be making their first trips to space. The mission will return station crew member Nicole Stott to Earth. STS-129 is slated to be the final space shuttle crew rotation flight to or from the space station. Atlantis will deliver almost 14 tons of spare parts and equipment to the space station. The mission will feature three spacewalks. STS-129 is the 31st shuttle mission to the station. At nearby Launch Pad 39B, space shuttle Endeavour is on standby in the unlikely event that a rescue mission for the Atlantis crew members would be necessary during their mission. Endeavour will be moved to Launch Pad 39A prior to its next mission, STS-127, targeted for a June launch. This likely marks the last time two space shuttles will stand on the launch pads at the same time since the shuttle program is set to end next year.
The launch of Atlantis on mission STS-125 5/11/09, from the NASA Causeway roughly 6 miles from pad 39A. This will be the last Hubble servicing mission, & arguably the most dangerous mission of the decade; hence the reason Endeavor is standing by on pad 39B if a rescue is needed. See the dolphin swimming just before liftoff? GREAT SOUND, so turn up the bass or wear a good pair of headphones, enjoy!

After Space Shuttle Atlantis launches (No earlier than October 14th, 2008) Space Shuttle Endeavour will be moved from pad 39B to pad 39A allowing NASA to retire pad 39B and redesign it for use on Constellation.
