Another simple soldering project completed: a "bug" with photoresistors that moves towards a light source
This is a very simple line following robot I made recently. It follows a black line on a white surface. The circuit doesn't use a micro-controller and is very simple, using only two ICs: a LM-339 Quad comparator and a L293D Motor Driver. For sensing the line I have used two CNY-70 optical sensor, each of which consists of a photo transistor and IR LED pair. For supply I have used a 6V rechargeable lead acid battery. Initially I did try using standard AA batteries but they get drained quite ...

This video shows a simple way of creating PCBs at home for your electronic projects. The method shown in video was used by me and our friends for college project. This video is was created by HP MW SR TS The method shown in video gives very accurate boards so try it !!!!!!!!!! Show notes: 1. Print your PCB layout on tranparent sheet. 2. Press sheet on copper-clad with ink side touching copper. 3. Apply heat on sheet from other side to melt ink on copper for 20-30mins. 4. Remove sheet and ...
Simple electronics project makes it so that my computer can be turned on by sonic screwdriver. Ok, so its not a *real* sonic screwdriver. A little bit of imagination is required, hehe. Uses a Boarduino (arduino variant) and an in-line photocell/transistor circuit. Light shines on the photocell, computer turns on. Pretty simple. Yes, you could turn it on with a regular flash light. But using a sonic screwdriver is way more awesome ^_^ ... "sonic screwdriver" "computer mods" "Dr. Who" "doctor who ...

Conway's Game of Life. Make one kit and keep it on your desk, or attach multiple kit modules together to create a large display. Originally created by Dropout Design, this revision adds a few extra features. The kit is very easy to make and an excellent first electronics/soldering project. It is perfect for workshops since at the end everyone can connect their completed module together. The animated GIF above shows 4 modules connected together. Each kit comes unassembled and includes all ...
By using reflected light from the LED, the photoresistor outputs varying resistances. Sooo, if the LED is shining blue, and you wave a blue object over the photoresistor, the indicator LED lights up indicating it is a color match. THE POSSIBILITIES!! A machine that sorts M&M's by color? A robot that criticizes you on your bad color-coordinating fashion choices? Something useful like an aid for colorblind/blind people? PS, I think I said "photodiode" in the video; I meant photoresistor....

This is the second video of my project to build an electric bass guitar. The design is simple, a maple wood, fretless, neck-through bass with cheap electronics :) Any help is very welcome!
25 years on, I decided to take up an old hobby - electronics. Whereas Z80 microprocessors were the leading edge 25 years ago, today, microcontrollers are the chip of choice. So I needed to define a simple project to grown my knowledge from zero. I took an analogy on a radio controlled vehicle and decided that was it. I would re-use an ancient joystick at one end and use even more ancient fischertechnik from my childhood days to put together a joystick controlled vehicle. At the joystick end ...

This short video was done in order to help unexperienced people on how to make their own FM radio transmitter for audio devices broadcasting, like MP3 players, podcasts, cd players etc... the range of broadcasting varies in accord to the size of the antena and also the power supply. this simple circuit requires a 9volts battery or a DC converter of 9 to 12 Volts. using the free microchip's MPLAB IDE. The chip was programmed by using a controller which allows low-voltage programming (LVP) through Parallel port and using WinPic800 software. The PC driving software is a simple Win32 console application which samples the local time, constructs the data using a simple protocol I made, and sends the data through serial COM port. Today I finished the simple painter program, controlled by three buttons. It could probably be considered the most simplest of painting programs, you move a cursor left and right with the two red buttons, it wraps left and right like a typewriter. Then you press the middle brown button to cycle from zero brightness to max brightness, in the MAX6956 chips Im using we have off (brt=0) then sixteen brightness levels, so its like having a 4 and a half bit greyscale display (17 separate ...
This is a simple system that I built for a school project. Soon I realized that it could be vex compatible so I set out to build it and came up with this. Testing mains transformers for homebrew projects by means of (a) (car) lamp(s). Perhaps the phase-story and situation with two secundary coils is not so clearly explained. It is not possible to put two secundary coils with different voltage rate parallel! The one will "shortcut" the other, which causes problems. So if you put two secundary AC coils of a mains transformer in a parallel way, they should be identical!. If you put secundary coils of a mains transformer in series, the VA (Watt ...
The importance of a galvanic coupled/galvanic connected (iron) enclosure for an electronic (audio) device to prevent hum, cracking sounds, disfunctioning and strange other fenomena of your home brew radio or audio amplifier. The reason is to equal out possible potential differences between parts of the enclosure. Potential differencies can lead to small (tiny) Voltages and resistances that can disturb the good functioning of electronics. So solder all the parts of the enclosure together by ...
How to use a mains transformer (for instance 110-230 Volt and 50-60 Hz) in an electronic project. Do's and dont's with mains transformers in home brew electronics. Tags: construction, core, lamellae, fuses, induction, stray field, high impedance input, location of the transformer on the chassis, etcetera. Saturation of the core means that the core gets more or less permanenty magnetised. In that case the magnetic field is not built up (and decreased) quickly enough (50 Hz -60 Hz), the ...

Doing cool stuff with the LED array. I sat down and developed some swish visuals. Its a text displayer, plus a random midpoint displacement (RMD) pattern simply there for 'background ambience' seen at the end of the vid. Other effects to come. Tech info - The text displayer stores all the characters in program space (theres vast swathes of it!) as opposed to in the on-chip EEPROM, only 256 bytes I think on the 16f88. The EEPROM is now free for use with the Daft Punk visuals, which is nice ...

This is my second attempt at breadboarding my disco light setup that will eventually make its way into my coffee table (glass topped). PIC16F88 communicating via I2C to two MAX6956 chips. The closer breadboard consists of the top three rows (half) of a 6x6 LED grid, the other MAX will control the bottom 3 rows, but at the moment only 5 LEDs connected to that one. May look messy, but at the mo its as tidy as I could have linked 18 wires back to the processor breadboard. Simple staggered fade ...

There's energy all around us that's just waiting to be tapped into. Whether it's hot coffee on a cold day, light from the sun, scented candles, waste heat from electronics... there's power to be had!
