United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight from Stapleton International Airport, in Denver, Colorado, to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois, with continuing service to Philadelphia International Airport in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (Registration N1819U) suffered an uncontained failure of its number 2 engine. Shrapnel was hurled from the engine with enough force to penetrate the hydraulic lines of all three of the aircraft's hydraulic systems. The hydraulic fluid from each system rapidly leaked from the aircraft, resulting in the inability of the crew to move the flight control surfaces. Only the thrust levers for the two remaining engines remained workable, so the crew had limited control by using thrust modulation (symmetric thrust for pitch, differential thrust for yaw/roll). The aircraft eventually broke up during an emergency landing on the runway at Sioux City, Iowa, killing 111 of its 285 passengers and one of the 11 crew members. Owing to the skill of the crew and a DC-10 instructor pilot who happened to be a passenger on the aircraft, 174 passengers and 10 crew members survived the crash. The disaster is considered an example of successful Crew Resource Management, due to the effective use of all available resources for help during the emergency

From KCAU-TV, Sioux City, Iowa. A severe weather update from legendary KCAU weatherman Tom Peterson on Friday evening, May 15, 1992. Tragically, Mr. Peterson died in a car accident on January 2, 1994, exactly sixteen years ago this weekend as I post this.
The third largest blizzard of all time for this area pounded Sioux City, Iowa and South Sioux City, Nebraska with 20.7 inches of snow and wind gusts to 50 MPH. This was the largest Christmas snowfall ever, and the largest December snowfall ever as well. Drifts to 15 feet were common in rural areas and even in the city proper. This storm is one for the record books. Meteorological: An intense storm system moved due north from the southern United States and phased with a northern stream system, dramatically intensifying. The storm then slowed and literally retrograded westnorthwest and slowing, before moving back east and weakening. The slow movement along with abundant moisture from both the Gulf and the Atlantic aided this storm in producing the record snowfall in the Sioux City, Iowa areas.

The concert hall was beautiful (as were the guys on stage). David's mother and step-father were in the audience (as you will see) and David was evidently having SUCH a good time, he added a THIRD song to the encore that night. We all came out of there pretty much floating on a cloud. Thanks again to David Cook and his Uber Awesome Ban for yet another amazing night. Oh, and I did my best to take as FEW still pictures during the actual songs as possible. However, that means you all don't get banter from me since THAT'S when I took the majority of my pictures.

In the fall of 2008, the Union Pacific Railroad sent it's Challenger locomotive on a PR tour through Iowa and up to Minnesota. The big 4-6-6-4 is depicted here in High Definition returning home through Le Mars, Iowa and arriving in Sioux City.
