Smart Home Energy Management has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
The electric power industry is experiencing a transformation today similar to the evolution of the Internet and World Wide Web 20 years ago. In fact, this transformation is the merging and intersection of the two most technically complex networks built by humans -- the Internet and electrical power grid. IP communications protocols, Internet enabled energy routers, 300000 miles of transmission lines, and linking of complex networks of sensors in power generation and distribution networks -- will give us the ability to monitor and manage energy in ways we could only imagine a few decades ago. This workshop will introduce the technical terminology emerging around smart meters, Home Area Networks (HAN), Energy Management Systems (EMS), Building Management Systems (BMS), and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging systems. What will this new landscape look like, how long will it take to build, and what skills will be needed to design, install, and service this new network? **** Speakers Bio Robert Cormia is a full-time faculty at Foothill College where he teaches informatics and nanotechnology, and works in campus wide sustainability issues including energy and GHG management. His background began in biochemistry, analytical chemistry and materials science, and later moved to the Internet, working in e-commerce and Web marketing. Bob joined the faculty of Foothill College full-time in 2001, and helped develop certificate programs in bioinformatics, informatics, and nanotechnology. He ...

The era of traditional power grids is coming to an end. Operationally, the smart grid provides increased reliability, more effective asset and energy management, and reduction of CO2 while integrating systems and devices on the distribution grid. This enables utilities to operate systems close to real time and at a more granular level, increasing efficiency and reliability. The smart grid is the foundation of the way utilities and customers will manage energy in the future. www.capgemini.com
Large centralized power plants are no longer the only source of electricity. Smart grids must now support the monitoring and management of renewable energy systems through two-way energy flow and distributed generation—and the foundation for the smart grid is the smart meter. www.capgemini.com

You use Intel in your PC, but did you know Intel chips are inside loads of common devices? Our chips can teach you how to workout, help control home energy use and even grow tomatoes. The possible places you might find Intel are endless! To show some of the non-PC uses for the Atom and Core processors you know and love, we created a few fun new videos that show a snapshot of some of the amazing things Intel chips are doing today by helping everyday devices get smarter. As our goal was to educate and entertain, we follow a mock-investigative news reporter as he discovers this brave new and intelligent world. In this video, (mock) reporter Chad Bradley finds out how Intelligent home energy management systems let you track how every watt of electricity is used, empowering smarter decisions that can help save the planet— and money, too. Solving Challenges in Energy, the Environment, and Health
Another captivating proof-of-concept display that Intel showed off at CES 2010 was its Home Dashboard. Since energy preservation is on nearly everyones mind, the home energy management system quickly became a hotspot. The device allows users to see the price of energy just by glancing at it. As a result, consumers can determine if they should do their laundry or wait until a later time to do it. The Home Dashboard also allows users to see the real-time energy usage around the house such as electricity, gas, and water. In addition, if a house is networked with smart appliances and plugs, users can see how much each appliances is costing them each day. There is a real-time billing application as well with which consumers can access their bills. The system can predict the end-of-the-month costs based upon the households previous usage. This application can help consumers make any necessary adjustments. Although the energy management feature is the primary application on the Home Dashboard, Intel also included other applications and functions in order to make it an everyday device for consumers. Intel told WebProNews that it was working with its customers to release a product of this nature by the second half of 2010.

Check out this clip from the Sundance Channels Lazy Environmentalist Episode 6 for a great peek at the Greenbox user interface. The show was the Lazy Environmentalist, a Sundance Channel show hosted by Josh Dorfman that offers easy tips for stylish, green living. Greenbox was featured on Episode 6, which aired July 21. The episode involved an energy efficiency overhaul at the home of Dorfmans brother, a landscaper in Connecticut. As highlighted by the program, Greenbox Technologys web-based solution is the ideal platform for tracking and understanding your homes energy usage and for comparing that usage over time as you make changes to conserve energy and make your home more efficient.
Our project is basically a home automation system from the future. We really tried hard to make this a feasible solution for problems that we saw related to energy consumption. We did extensive research on the current state of home automation not only at a commercial level but at a scholarly level. We noticed that commercial systems are basically just home management systems whereas the current scholarly research lacks the scalability needed to realize home automation systems in all of our homes. Our current progress is really setting up the framework for this larger system. We really took a hard look at home heating systems and lighting. We focused on trying to make the concept of having a single temperature setting for the whole house obsolete. We have created a zone system that allows automated control of venting units that are controlled by a base unit making decisions based on the state of attached temperature sensors.
