In the early 60s, Detroit was on the move. It was Motown USA , home to major auto makers, and the newly formed Motown Records. Motown founder Berry Gordy not only lent an ear to a different kind of music in the air from a newly energized city. He coined it the sound of young America.... And believed it would break down the barriers between black and white popular music. What's at the heart of the Motown Sound is questionable even today. Of course, there were stylistic elements that artists of the 60's and 70's shared. But these same artists represented such distinct styles, and were so different from each other, that one could only agree that a single Motown Sound is a myth. Unless you believe that there is no difference between the Contours' Do You Love Me, Mary Well's My Guy, The Four Tops' Reach Out I'll Be There, and Marvin Gayes' I Heard It Through The Grapevine. Only one group, dedicated to recreating the Motown experience in both music and dance, understands the similarities and differences of the Motown Sound. They are The Fabulous Motown Revue. A wide range of audiences nationwide, including major corporations and organizations, have seen and heard for themselves what could only be described as true Motown. Mo'feeling....Mo'sound....Mo'everything... The Fabulous Motown Revue features many players who were actually walkin' the walk and talkin' the talk in the heart of the 60's Motown Movement. That's the secret to their success. Performing together for over 25 ...

Here is a medley of four of Marvin Gayes greatest hits from his early years at Motown Records. Includes How Sweet It Is, Aint Nothing Like The Real Thing, Your Precious Love and Ill Be Doggone in that order, respectively. He is accompanied by Tammi Terrell on the middle two tracks and by Tina Turner on the last one. More on Marvin and the four songs: Born in 1939 in DC to a father from Kentucky and a mother from North Carolina, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music. Moving from lean, powerful R&B to stylish, sophisticated soul to finally arrive at an intensely political and personal form of artistic self-expression, his work not only redefined soul music as a creative force but also expanded its impact as an agent for social change. Marvin Gaye was one of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine. "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" is a 1964 hit song written and produced by the Motown songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. It was originally recorded by American soul singer Marvin Gaye and became one of his most popular songs. It has been covered on many occasions, including by fellow Motown artist Jr. Walker & the All Stars. It was a #5 pop and #1 adult contemporary hit for James Taylor in the summer of 1975. Other notable versions include those by Jerry Garcia Band who recorded and included the song in their rotation for twenty years, Cissy Houston who cut a ...

www.MediaEd.org From the DVD The Pathology of Privilege Racism, White Denial & the Costs of Inequality For years, acclaimed author and speaker Tim Wise has been electrifying audiences on the college lecture circuit with his deeply personal take on whiteness and white privilege. In this spellbinding lecture, the author of White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son offers a unique, inside-out view of race and racism in America. Expertly overcoming the defensiveness that often surrounds these issues, Wise provides a non-confrontational explanation of white privilege and the damage it does not only to people of color, but to white people as well. This is an invaluable classroom resource: an ideal introduction to the social construction of racial identities, and a critical new tool for exploring the often invoked - but seldom explained - concept of white privilege.
