This week's winter storm could be one for record books Chicago was under a blizzard watch late Sunday as portions of the Midwest and Northeast braced for a major storm system that will bring bitter cold and a "long duration" of snow, according to forecasters. Some of the coldest air of the season will plummet southward and combine with another storm developing over the southern Plains, according to CNN meteorologist Sean Morris. An intense surface low will develop over north Texas and pull abundant warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico into the frigid Arctic air diving southward into the Plains. The result: blizzard conditions, heavy snow, ice storms and tornadoes. This storm appears to be another one for the record books. The storm will likely extend from Oklahoma City to Caribou, Maine, by late week, said CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen. The National Weather Service said the "dangerous storm" will begin to affect Missouri and Illinois, which were under storm warnings, as early as Monday. Snowfall, primarily on Tuesday, could be over 12 inches in parts of both states, the agency said. CNN St. Louis affiliate KSDK indicated the storm could be "historic," saying it could rival a 1981 system that left 13.9 inches of snow in St. Louis and some areas with more than 2 feet. Very heavy snow will fall from Oklahoma northeastward through Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. Snow accumulations here will be measured in feet, not in inches. Blizzard or near-blizzard conditions are ...

A storm system that literally brought the city of Atlanta to a grinding halt, several road closures on interstates 75,85, and 285. Inches of snow and hard ice that continued to be resilliant and stubborn to melt as we spent the following day (Monday) in the 20's, and of course plenty of spinning and sliding from cars, to trucks, to buses, to 18 wheelers. Hartsfield-Jackson Int'l practically shut down and Downtown Atlanta is a ghost town. Conditions from this storm to many remind them of the Superstorm of '93. We saw it all from this storm except the kitchen sink! Music playing in the local forecast here is the appropiate "First Snow" by Trans Siberian Orchestra. They have termed this massive snowfall 'Lake Effect Snow'. I call it directional! Canada and The Great Lakes area suffer huge amounts of snowfall. - Motorists stranded on motorways for 24 hours in sub-zero temperatures. 'The distribution of snowfall in the Great Lakes region resulting from lake-effect snowfall is dependent upon several factors: the position of the storm tracks, the degree and variations in lake water temperatures, the extent of ice coverage, prevailing wind directions and the frequency of strong wind speeds. Topographic contrasts to the lee of each of the Great Lakes also affect the intensity and spatial distribution of lake effect snowfall. Lake effect snowfall contributes between 30% and 50% of the annual winter snowfall on the eastern and southern shores of the Great Lakes'. www.islandnet.com - Snow Report: Ontario - The Weather Network www.theweathernetwork.com CNN - edition.cnn.com Twitter - DIGG - Fark - Buzz -Delicious - Google - Stumbleupon - WN.com - CNN-ireporter - SKY-News Latest News - Breaking News - International News - Newsitemstoday.com - "Hot Topics" -

Quick review of the winter capabilities of the Continental ExtremeContact DWS Ultra High Performance All Season tire including full ABS (anti-lock braking system) tests, hill starts, traction limitation testing. Overall, I found the DWS to be a very capable all season tire if you simply cannot afford to purchase a set of separate winter tires, especially if you don't do much hill climbing or don't experience significant amounts of snowfall. My separate pair of Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 winter tires have significantly more grip, and that's in comparison to the DWS, which is the highest rated all season tire on tirerack.com for winter weather performance. If you live in an area that experiences significant snowfall, a separate pair of dedicated snow tires are worth the investment.

Dan Pope's short and longer versions of weathercasts that play during the early news on KSL-TV for Monday April 5th 2010. A crazy weather day is on tap for the Wasatch Front and for much of Utah. Significant snowfall could add up to 24 to 36 inches in the Wasatch Mountains, with 5 to 12 inches on the Benches (with the Davis and Salt Lake County Benches getting the added effect of Great Salt Lake Effect). Most valleys above 4500 feet will see several inches of snow. Wind gusts could exceed 60 mph when the front moves through Salt Lake City around 2:30 to 3:30 pm...along with lightning, sleet, rain turning to snow and thunder. Once the snow begins, it will continue into the overnight and morning hours on Tuesday (thus the high amounts of accumulation anticipated). Tuesday morning will be a commuter special, with slush and snow packed conditions, especially coming out of the canyons and off the Benches. Good news for the remainder of the week...turning much warmer and drier. In fact, most of the snow that falls in the next two days will probably melt in the valleys.
The lower Kenai Peninsula in Alaska had a blizzard over a period of 5 days that closed schools, roads and business. The last time a large snowfall in this magnitude occured was in Febuary of 1990. This was also the last time schools were closed due to weather. Schools have closed due to volcanic ash more times than from snowfall here. Snowfall amounts without counting the drifts that occured, measured anywhere from 2.5 feet, to 7 feet, depending on where you were. This video was taken on the Sterling Highway, from mile 165.5 to mile 170, on the way to Homer from Anchor Point, Alaska. Enjoy the beauty that lasts only briefly, here.

FOX 6 Milwaukee Chief Meteorologist Vince Condella talks about the importance of snow-to-water ratio when forecasting snowfall amounts in this edition of his Video Weather Notes.
The snow is tapering off, finally. Just some flurries around as the storm weakens and finally moves away. You can see what appears to be an eye just south of Riverhead, as this coastal storm actually developed some tropical chracteristics. With water temperatures in the 60s off the VA coast, the fuel exists in these storms in the form of the Gulf Stream. We may be getting more such storms as Global Warming raises water temperatures. Fortunately for Long Island, being south was actually a good thing as the temps dropped as cold air wrapped in ON THE SOUTH SIDE of the storm and the snow was more powdery, whereas further north the snow was wetter, and the snow was much more wet and heavy, and thus places like Putnam and Orange Counties have a large portion of the population out of power. (LIPA is bragging about how well they did on the news compared to upstate, but it wasn't LIPA's doing, it was the lighter weight of the snow here). Hopefully this is the last storm of the season, though long range models show another coastal that may just miss us for midweek! Link for area snowfall totals below: forecast.weather.gov
Normally, I like snow. I loved the snows we had earlier this winter. But this wet sloppy stuff is no fun. Its hard to walk in and takes forever to melt. Just when we got rid of most of it, more is coming. Despite the lack of cold air, a coastal storm will stall over our area for the next 24-48 hours, and move very little, as it gets trapped in a Cut-Off low. Its bad enough we've been stuck in the clouds since Monday, and it could be 3 more days till we see the sun again. Cloudy weeks just make me feel sick and go crazy I tell you! A full 7 days without sun on Long Island! Anyway, this is a highly unusual, anamalous kind of storm. The rain snow line has been over NYC for most of the day stretching in a NS line, and tonight has progressed east across Nassau County. The snowfall is extremely slushy and wet, as temps remain a few degrees above freezing. Fortunately the East end remains rain and low 40s, but by tomorrow the slop should go their way as well. I think the eastern half of Suffolk will probably get off easy with 3-5 inches, but further west in places west of Nicholls Rd, I expect to see higher amounts closer to 6-10 inches, with Nassau being more like 8-10 inches. This all depends on an almost tricky, impossible forecast, though. If temps stay warm enough than maybe Nassau will get closer to only 6 inches. NYC will probably definately see a foot, and more west of there where the precip stays all snow. Southern NJ will probably get whalloped with another foot of ...
