Song about erosion... and conservation. Tackling another part of the Virginia Standards of Learning Science section 3.7 Lyrics: Weathering turns solid rock into silt and sand and clay But erosion... Erosion... It carries them away Humus forms when living things die and then decay. But erosion... Erosion... It carries it away Erosion takes away the soil we need to help things grow. Soil's so good; if I could, I would never let it go. So conservation is what we can do to help our soil to stay. 'Cause erosion... Erosion... It carries it away... Erosion... it carries it away.

MaximsNewsNetwork: 22 March 2010 - UN MINUSTAH: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - A "cash for work" programme carried out by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is employing more than 1500 Haitians to work on water and soil conservation projects ahead of the rainy season in the country. The programme, carried out in the coastal town of Saint Marc in western Haiti, works with vulnerable and earthquake-affected communities and local authorities. It employs mostly Haitians displaced from Port au Prince and enables them to contribute to their own countrys rehabilitation. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Maccormack, Program Officer, International Organization for Migration: We started one week after the earthquake and we really targeted those people who came from Port au Prince that we displaced because of the earthquake and obviously it is important for people to make a little bit of money so that they can eat and live after losing everything. The income is helping families cope with soaring food prices and replace belongings lost in the earthquake. Soil conservation is also becoming a priority as the rainy season approaches. As a part of the programme, the workers build rows of stone walls around the hillsides and break the slope into a series of terraces that will fill with soil during the rains and provide productive farmland in the future. SOUNDBITE (English) Jennifer Maccormack, Program Officer, International Organization for Migration: You can see that communities are ...

What is no-till? No-till is a system in which the soil is not disturbed before planting except for injecting fertilizer nutrients such as liquid manure or anhydrous ammonia. A double-disk opener creates a seed furrow for planting. Tillage is entirely eliminated. Residue from the previous crop remains on the soil's surface to protect it from erosion. No-till Benefits: Economics, money saving (less equipment, fuel and labor). Soil conservation, erosion control. Increased soil health/organic matter. No-till increases soil organic matter, which helps to stabilize the soil. Water infiltration and soil porosity are improved and surface crusting is reduced. Planter Leveling: Set up and adjustment of the planter closing system to the rear of the seed opener and any front-mounted attachment (such as row cleaners) depends on the planter frame being leveled for field operation. The ILF promotes the conservation farming practice that the equipment in this video is manufactured to accomplish.

Soil is made up of air, water, mineral particles, organic matter and organisms. It takes thousands of years for rock to develop into soil and hundreds of years for rich organic layers to build up. Keeping soil in place is only the beginning of soil conservation. In this video, we will review how far we have come and explore what needs to be done to preserve this precious resource. We also will look at how soil affects us and our productivity. How do we continue to maximize the land's output without diminishing the soil's natural capacity? Created to accompany the video series, these two publications serve as additional resources for educating youth about the importance of our natural resources. Conservation agriculture (CA) aims to achieve sustainable and profitable agriculture and subsequently aimes at improved livelihoods of farmers through the application of the three CA principles: minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and crop rotations. CA holds tremendous potential for all sizes of farms and agro-ecological systems, but its adoption is perhaps most urgently required by smallholder farmers, especially those facing acute labour shortages. It is a way to combine profitable agricultural production with environmental concerns and sustainability and it has been proven to work in a variety of agroecological zones and farming systems. It is been perceived by practitioners as a valid tool for Sustainable Land Management (SLM).

The Vetiver System has been successfully used in Ethiopia for Soil and Water Conservation for nearly 20 years. it was introduced by an Austrian NGO - Menschen fur Menschen - to farmers in Illubabor Province. Currently over 20000 farmers are using Vetiver System for erosion control and crop yield improvement. The technology has been promoted by the NGO SLUF - Ethiopia Sustainable Land Use Forum - and from farmer to farmer. Vetiver is being used in many other Ethiopian provinces, and the same practices could be followed in other African countries. This an important technology and has far reaching consequences particularly at this time of climate change. More info at www.vetiver.org
Hassan Ali is a farmer in western Ethiopia who has led the way in using vetiver grass and the Vetiver System for soil and water conservation. He has increased crop yield by 30% stopped erosion, and improved groundwater. He has taught at least 100 other farmers how to use the Vetiver System, and has provided plant material to get them started. The extra wealth that he has created has enabled him to send two sons to University.

Conservation scientists and foresters often specialize in one area, such as wildlife management, soil conservation, urban forestry, pest management, native species, or forest economics. Soil conservationists usually begin working within one county or conservation district and, with experience, may advance to the area, State, regional, or national level. Also, soil conservationists can transfer to related occupations, such as farm or ranch management advisor or land appraiser.
