ORANGE PARK, Fla. - Investigators in Florida have charged a 24-year-old man with murder in the slaying of a 7-year-old girl who disappeared while walking home from school last year. Jarred Mitchell Harrell was charged Friday with killing Somer Thompson. He has been in custody since Feb. 11, when authorities arrested Harrell in Mississippi on Florida child pornography charges. Harrell was then extradited to Florida. Somer disappeared Oct. 19 and a massive search was launched in the Jacksonville suburb of Orange Park. Her body was found two days later in a Georgia landfill nearly 50 miles away.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla -- Police have arrested a man they say could be connected to the murder of 7 year-old Somer Thompson. Police say Jarred Harrell, 24, was arrested in Meridian, Mississippi Wednesday on possession of 29 counts of child pornography charges. He is being held on $1 million dollar bond in the Lauderdale County jail. Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said in a news conference that the FBI and US Marshall's arrested Harrell at a home in Meridian. They also said they collected computers from a residence off of Wells Road and a home in Callahan. Investigators have been searching a home off of Gano Avenue, a short distance from where Somer was last scene. Currently Harrell is not charged with the murder, but police say they have reason to believe his is connected to her murder. Somer disappeared in October while walking home from school. Her body was found days later in a Georgia landfill. Stay tuned to Action News for the latest on the investigation. Somer became separated from her siblings and schoolmates on her way home from school in Orange Park, Florida, on Monday. She was seen in a fight at school before she disappeared, according to a police report released Thursday. Her 10-year-old sister told police that Somer had gotten into a fight with another girl at school earlier in the day. Sheriff Rick Beseler said Thursday that the identification was based on clothing on the body and a birthmark that matched the girl's. The partially covered body of the child was found in a Georgia landfill near the Florida state line, after investigators followed garbage trucks leaving the neighborhood where the child disappeared Monday. Beseler said at a news conference he still fears for the community until a suspect is apprehended. Somer Thompson: Childs Body Found In Georgia Landfill By Ryan Somer Thompson, the 7 year old Florida girl missing since Monday, has not been found, but a childs body found in a Georgia Landfill has lessened hopes that the child will be found alive. Officials have not yet made a positive identification of Somer Thompson, but authorities did find a childs body in a Georgia landfill, and according to the Sheriff in charge of the investigation the garbage came from the same area as where Somer went missing. The landfill is approximately an hour away from where Somer Thompson went missing while walking home from school on Monday afternoon. The Chesser Island Road Landfill in Southern Georgia is where the body was discovered. According to this story, landfill searches are extremely difficult given the nature of the search location. Somer reportedly got into an argument with some other children she was walking home with and ran ahead of the group she was walking with. When her siblings arrived home she was not there and authorities were contacted. It is being reported, here, that Somers father has spoken with detectives who have reported that a circular birthmark found on the childs leg matches a description of a similar birthmark located on Somer.
