This song I uploaded as a tribute to veteran painter and singer Susil Premaratne who passed away at the age of 85 on 11th February 2010. Premarathne was the son of famous pioneering Buddhist painter M Sarlis known as Sarlis master. He rose to fame with one of the most loved by songs titled 'Somnasa' written by late Sarath Wimalaweera during his association with the Radio Ceylon. Premarathne had been in the art scene for alomst 62 years and had sung many famous songs. 'Sangawunu Pilithura' was directed by BAW Jayamanne and Rukmani acted in the film too. This could be one of the very few songs sung by Susil and Rukmani together.

indian classical dances he Gods and the Goddesses, being dancers themselves, have been passing the art of the heavenly dance through many other human channels, whose aptitude, understanding, and personal idiosyncrasies naturally varied from person to person, and created a number of styles ranging from Odissi to Bharatanatyam.Bharata natyam has been undergoing a lot of change over the centuries (click here to read more). Bharatanatyam used to be and is still mostly performed by women dancers. The Hindu temples, especially in South India, had dancers-priestesses called devadasis . They sang and danced Dasi Attam (old version of Bharatanatyam) andplayed many musical instruments. They were well-versed in Sanskrit and other languages as they had to adapt compositions to suit the audience. The devadasi tradition gradually degraded. Initially, devadasis lead a very strict and celibate life and were not allowed to have a family. As the dance entered the royal courts, the dancers were called Rajanartakis, who performed in the royal courts and gradually became royal concubines. The British colonial rule has completely corrupted the devadasi tradition. Bharatanatyam Bharatanatyam was largely restructured about 150 years ago by the Tanjore Quartet (Chinniah, Sivanandam, Ponniah and Vadivelu). In Tamil Nadu various styles of Bharatanatyam have been practiced mostly by the Bharata natyam gurus and performers of the Isai Velalar caste. The Tanjore Quartet re-organized the core ...

One of the popular songs from the movie 'Monarathenna' sung by TMJ & Latha. Malini and Vijaya once again paved the way for popularity in this rural story which was based on a radio play back in the 1970s. Rukmani and Rex Kodippilli star as parents. Yasapalitha Nanayakkara directed and music composed by Maestro Khemadasa.
A classic by Nanda Malini for 'Monarathenna' in which Malini Fonseka depicts a mother figure. If my memory serves me well the song is written by late Dharmasiri Gamage. Music by legend Khemadasa. The clip features Rex Kodippili, Piyadasa Wijekoon and Rukmani Devi too. One of my favourite songs.

Soundarya Lahari the Great Maha Manthra of Shri. Adhi Sankara. Music By Thiruthuraipoondi Smt V.Rukmani. Vedic pundits says, while Shri Adhi Sankara was at Kashmir, he had a personal message from Sri Devi and then he wrote the Soundaryalahari Maha Mantra for the well being all people in the world. Soundarya Lahari meaning waves of beauty consists of two parts viz. Ananda Lahari meaning waves of happiness (first 41 stanzas) and Soundarya Lahari(the next 59 stanzas). It is believed that Lord Ganesha himself has etched the Ananda Lahari on Mount Meru(Some people believe that Sage Pushpa Dhantha did the etching). Sage Gouda Pada who taught it to Adhi Sankara. Adhi Sankara himself added the rest of the 59 stanzas and completed it. These 100 stanzas are supposed to be the foremost among Manthra literature. People By Reading or hearing Soundarya lahari verses will attain mental peace, Good health and wealthy living.

King Dushyanta first encountered Shakuntala while travelling through the forest with his army. Pursuing a male deer wounded by his arrow into the ashram (hermitage), he saw Shakuntala nursing the deer, her pet, and fell in love with her. He profusely begged her forgiveness for harming the deer and spent some time at the ashram. They fell in love and Dushyanta married Shakuntala there in the ashram. Having to leave after some time due to unrest in the capital city, Dushyanta gave Shakuntala a royal ring as a sign of their love, promising her that he would return for her.

This is a rather popular dance type song sung by the Rukmani and Derrick De Silva duo. It was one of the few last songs that silver screen queen sang in the 1970s before her demise in 1978. Rukmani who hails as a queen for singing sad songs come up so popular with this track. Derrick still sings at concerts this song with new songstresses.
This is a classic by Beig master. Rukmani Devi and Senadeera Kuruppu starred in the movie 'Daiwa Yogaya' (1950s), the former also sung together with Beig. Kuruppu is famously known for his hair style in the 1950s in the film. Lyrics by Sri Chandrarathna Manawasinghe Beautiful music arrangement Sajjad Hussain too! This particular recording was obtained directly from the SLBC archives, a compilation made for Sri Chandraratne Manawasinghe's 40th death anniversary(1964) held in 2004. Manawasinghe had been a pioneer in Sinhalese literature with beaituful poems (especially his patriotism on the country), his son Udaya has been in the literary circles too nowadays. Music - Sajjad Hussain Lyrics - Sri Chadraratne Manawasinghe
Rukmani Devi sang this song for the movie 'Kele Handa' while acting the character 'malini'. This is the original gramophone version of the song. This song was later sung in a higher tempo by her self which got so popular. However, the original was not so known among our fans so thought of uploading to get a flavour of it.
Rukmani Devi was the Silver screen queen from 1940s to 1960s. She happens to be the only actress who performed both singing and acting simulataneously. 'Adaraya Nisa' was one of the popular songs from her music library and 'Dewa gini mawa duk' was from the movie 'Kele Handa' where she performed the character 'Malini' in the 1950s. Mohideen Beig performed with her in the other songs of the film. eg Mageya prema malini etc. These songs are the originals. Most of her songs have been mixed with the new 'drum track' to enhance the cassette or the CD version, but these were taken from the HMV records.

"Gayana Geyum" performed by Los Caballeros led by Neville Fernando from Sir Lester James Peiris's movie "Delovak Athara". Listen to the rich vocal harmony arranged by Neville himself and recorded live unlike the modern day track recordings, where you mostly get patches, loops and vocals being recorded part by part. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only Sri Lankan group that had the richest vocal harmony arrangements. Late Dharmadasa Walpola Dharmadasa Walpola (19271983) was the most prominent Sri Lankan male playback singer of the 1950s and 1960s. Walpola was an accomplished musician adapt at playing the flute, harmonium, violin and tabla. Early life Walpola's father Palis Ayya worked with costumes for the Tower Hall theater. Walpola had to forgo his education at a young age to support his family and for a time built masks for the Sri Lankan army. At that time he won a role in Sirisena Wimalaweera's play Amma singing a virindu. He subsequently acted and sang in the play Wessantha as well. To master the flute, Walpola began taking lessons from Eddie Master and then attended RA Chandrasena's Academy. Chandrasena was impressed by Walpola's ability to sing and after auditioning several songs with harmonium accompaniment, sent a good word to the Radio Ceylon broadcaster Thevis Guruge. Guruge gave Walpola a sarala gee programme with a duet partner GSB Rani Perera. Playback singing (1953-1963) Walpola debuted as a playback singer in the 1953 film Prema Tharangaya alongside his future wife Rita Genevi Fernando.[2] Around 1956, Walpola married Fernando who subsequently adapted the name Latha Walpola. From his debut to the early 60s, Walpola dominated male playback singing in Sri Lankan cinema providing a counterpoint to the harsh Carnatic style of Mohideen Baig with his softer more melodic voice which lend itself to love songs. His best known work from this period include "Seeya Manamalaya ...
