Leonard Susskind (born 1940)[1] is the Felix Bloch professor of theoretical physics at Stanford University, whose research interests include string theory, quantum field theory, quantum statistical mechanics and quantum cosmology.[2] He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences,[3] and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences,[4] an associate member of the faculty of Canada's Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics,[5] and a distinguished professor of the Korea Institute for Advanced Study.[6] Susskind is widely regarded as one of the fathers of string theory,[7] who with Yoichiro Nambu and Holger Bech Nielsen, independently introduced the idea that particles could in fact be states of excitation of a relativistic string.[8] He was the first to introduce the idea of the string theory landscape in 2003.[9] In 1997, Susskind was awarded the JJ Sakurai Prize for his "pioneering contributions to hadronic string models, lattice gauge theories, quantum chromodynamics, and dynamical symmetry breaking". Susskind's hallmark, according to colleagues, has been the application of "brilliant imagination and originality to the theoretical study of the nature of the elementary particles and forces that make up the physical world. Early life and education Susskind was born in a poor Jewish family from the South Bronx section of New York City,[11] and now resides in Palo Alto, California. He began working as a plumber at the age of 16, taking over for his father who had become ...

The future of the celebrated Albany group of independent midwives has been put in doubt after south London's King's College Hospital terminated its contract * Sarah Boseley and John Domokos * guardian.co.uk, Monday 7 December 2009 21.58 GMT The future of the celebrated Albany group of independent midwives has been put in doubt after south London's King's College Hospital terminated its contract, alleging that a disproportionate number of the babies it delivered suffered damage during the birth. The Albany group, which works in Peckham, south London, where deprivation levels are high, has long been held up as a shining example of what is possible in NHS midwifery. It supports women to give birth wherever they choose almost half give birth at home and medical intervention rates are low. All women have their babies delivered by the midwife they first see and the group's caesarean and medical intervention rates are low. But King's says babies delivered by Albany midwives had higher rates of hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy brain damage caused by lack of oxygen and lack of blood flow to the brain than those delivered by midwives it employs directly over the last two and a half years. Such brain damage can be caused during birth for example, if the cord gets wrapped around the baby's neck but it can also occur in the womb. King's decided to terminate the contract after commissioning a report from the Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries (CMACE). It is believed the ...

Growing up in the south, Anthony Heyward revered his grandfather as the definition of masculinity and character — a perception that would be reinforced by a tense exchange between the man and a local bank manager. Heyward (BMCC 09) was a teenager at the time, but the incident stayed with him. He wrote about it in a memoir entitled Granddaddy, which has been selected for publication in the 2009 edition of Nota Bene, Phi Theta Kappas literary honors anthology. Founded in 1918, PTK is the international honor society of two-year colleges. Heyward is currently pursuing a double major—in English and education—at City College and preparing for a career as a teacher. Prior to attending BMCC, I had only a general knowledge of what it meant to be a teacher and what I might accomplish in a classroom, he says. What I got from BMCC was a passion for the possibility of activism through education—and an understanding of how I might be able to turn that passion into ways for students from urban areas to overcome some of their disadvantages. Finishing touches Clearly, much of that passion is part of the legacy Heyward inherited from his grandfather. Id been working on Granddaddy for quite some time, but it was in my last semester at BMCC that I got it into shape with the help of my creative writing teacher, Dr. Carlos Hernandez, he says. As a man of color growing up in the South in the 1930s and 40s, Heywards granddaddy — his name was Joseph Smith—never had the opportunities that would ...
