If you have severely damaged hair and a LOT of split ends (like...a buttload of splitends) then it would be in your best interest to get a haircut instead =p How I trim my hair. I probably dont do this 1/month, maybe once every two months or so or whenever I feel I need it :) Do it more or less depending on the condition of your hair
