www.whitesquirrels.ca The "WHITE WONDER" Song 45 RPM record - Recorded 1984 PETER SNELL AND THE HOMETOWN BAND Although its exact origin is uncertain, the White Squirrel has been part of Exeter's environment since 1912 or longer. They have thrived over the years and today are seen in significant numbers in the parks and treed residential areas. The White Squirrel is not an albino, but is white with brown or black eyes. The town of Exeter has recognized the uniqueness of our White Squirrel population and has accordingly adopted the little fellows as an important aspect of our town image. The community has endorsed "White Wonder", the official name of our White Squirrels, through commercial promotions and by providing squirrel nests to help preserve the species. If anyone has any relevant knowledge regarding the history and development of the White Squirrel in Exeter, please submit your information to the town office.
The local squirrel population figured out the trick to get to the bird feeder.
Squirrel Hoarding Introduction The gray squirrels that you see in city parks and around neighborhoods are actually forest dwellers. But many of their natural, wooded habitats have been converted into farms, so they've sought refuge in places where they don't have too many predators—like in your backyard. In this Science Update, you'll learn how the loss of gray squirrels is affecting the forest. Podcast Squirrel Hoarding Transcript How squirrels change a forest. I'm Bob Hirshon and this is Science Update. Squirrels collect and store nuts so they'll have food to last through winter. That thriftiness benefits more than just the squirrel—it helps the trees, too. That's according to Rob Swihart, a wildlife ecologist at Purdue University. Swihart: Nuts clearly are dependent on either gravity or animals for dispersal. Squirrels are one of the most important species in this regard. But not all squirrels provide this service. Swihart and his colleagues have found that gray squirrels bury nuts all over the place, and often forget them. That results in trees growing in new areas. But red squirrels store nuts in piles on the ground. Those piled-up nuts tend to dry out and don't take root. And because red squirrels adapt better to changes in the landscape, Swihart says the squirrel population might be shifting toward that species. Swihart: We are predicting that that will have a significant impact on the nut-producing trees that depend on—at least to a fair extent—gray squirrels for ...
The word is out. The local grey squirrel population have devised a new plan for eating my birdfood. The crafty beggers! They have decided to feed from around the other side of the birdfeeder, thinking that the feeder offers them protection from death. Well it doesnt! See how Mr Nutkin is beaten at his own game. He mistakenly peeps around the side of the feeder to see if I am there. And I am! Its all over in a scecond. Peep - bang - dead! Bring it on.

Pine squirrels are small tree squirrels with bushy tails, and along with members of the genus Sciurus, they are members of the large family Sciuridae. The Sciuridae conform most closely to the commonly held idea of what a squirrel looks like and how it behaves. The American Red Squirrel should not be confused with the Eurasian Red Squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris - both are usually just referred to as the "red squirrel" in their home continents. In southeastern Arizona there is a relict population of T. hudsonicus considered sufficiently distinct to be awarded sub-species status, T. hudsonicus grahamenis, the Mount Graham Pine Squirrel, reduced to a few hundred members on the Madrean sky islands conifer forests at higher, cooler altitudes. They are the southernmost of the entire species, left stranded when desertification reduced the area of conifer forest that existed in glacial times. Some authors treat the Mount Graham Pine Squirrel as a distinct species, T. grahamensis.

Another challenge I attempted on Saturday. This time shooting for .5 MOA. I always shoot a pair of 5 shot groups when testing handloads. These were all 40 grain Sierra Blitz Kings (good for controlling the squirrel population at the homestead) loaded in the ballpark of 3700-3800 FPS out of my 24" stainless bull barrel. I was pretty pleased with the results... I just might have to tweek COAL to get these groups tighter. If 5-shot, .5 MOA are the requirement, I failed. But If the best 3 out of 5 is acceptable, then almost all the groups qualify. One 3 shot group was right around .224 (bullet diameter) as I don't have official measuring tools I had to use a caliper. Group size was measured center to center of the extreme spread. Peace.

Produced by Nick Molle Productions - Watch more of these programs on EPTV Channel 8 in Estes Park, Colorado or visit www.rockymountainchannel.com The most distinctive of the squirrels is the Aberts squirrel with its conspicuous ear tufts and long, full tail. They are fairly large and heavy-bodied getting up to 23 inches in length. The majority of the individuals in the park are dark gray to black. It is found principally on the eastern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park at elevations of approximately 8500 feet. It prefers ponderosa pine woodlands, but its population is sporadic. It feeds on the ponderosa pine cones but does not store them in appreciable amounts. It builds elaborate year-round nests in ponderosa pine trees. They are active during the day and return to their nests during the night. Their territories are much larger than that of other squirrels. During the mating season of March to April, females may entice several males to conduct elaborate chases before choosing a mate. Litters of two to five young are born after a gestations period of about seven weeks. They are not weaned until almost 19 weeks in age.
