Stabbing Westward was an American industrial rock and alternative rock band. They formed in 1985 in Chicago, Illinois and began recording in the 1990s.
Christopher Hall and Walter Flakus, friends who both worked at the same Western Illinois University college radio station circa 1985, decided to start an Industrial band by name of Stabbing Westward. The name Stabbing Westward was derived from a random album's liner notes. The name appealed to both Christopher and Walter for a couple of different reasons, one of which was how it described how neither of them liked the place where they currently resided.
Moving to Chicago in 1986, the original lineup consisted of Christopher on bass, Walter on keybords, and Jim Clanin on guitar. Christopher switched to guitar when Jim Sellers (whom would stay with the band for the remainder of their career) joined the band as the bass player.
