One of Steffi's last matches :'(
Realizing that Chrissie may have made Pam look bad in the clip we posted, with no other videos up of her play, we decided to do our friend Pam Shriver a favor & show the match where she beat Steffi Graf in the 1988 Slims Championships. Shriver was a very tough competitor and skilled player, and was part of a very deep field of VARIED styles in women's tennis that brought a lot of color, dynamics, and excitement to the sport. "The PAMther" put Steffi under pressure by coming into net even off Graf's first serve, taking away her time, her ability to run around the backhand, and her ability to dictate the pace of the match. But Steffi's brilliant & powerful groundies kept her deep in the hunt despite the well-orchestrated onslaught, climaxing in a tense 2nd set tie-break showdown! Commentary: Steve Flink, Bud Collins, Mary Carillo. Footage courtesy of chrisevert.net
EDITED FOR EVERT FANS: Steffi was at her very best, having won 48 straight sets since Nov '88 and only dropped 10 games in 4 matches prior to the final. Chris was well past her prime at 34 but was ready for the battle on her home court in Boca Raton. This is the only 3-set match they played, and is a much better representation of the Evert/Graf rivalry than their last confrontation at Wimbledon. Chris had played only 4 matches since April before that Wimbledon, so she was far from match tough & was not prepared to give Graf a fight worthy of their dynamics. But here's the match where fireworks were on display from both players. The crowd was chanting 'Steffi' or 'Chrissie' depending on where you sat, and many linecall dramas interrupted play. Chris went into her ONLY career 'Jimmy Connors storming the chair' style moment!! So this is required viewing for Chrissie fans, despite having to take a tough loss. She didn't have the concentration, hunger, fearlessness, and undistractability of her younger years... but as this match shows, the Evert/Graf rivalry had absolutely stunning potential. (This match was played on hard court...the brown color makes it look like clay)

Because yes, despite the urban legend, she has a (even topspin) backhand, here are some proofs ;p (89 & 92)

Steffi Graf: As if this match wasn't entertaining enough... Working for NBC, Chris Evert was really on that day. It wasn't that she was any more insightful than she usually was. It was that she was just herself. Listen for yourself. At one point, Chris makes fun of the chair umpire. She calls John McEnroe lazy. (John is in the booth with her and Dick Enberg.) She admits to trying, rather falsely, to build up Margaret Court's image. When Chris was trying to be nice and smart, she was usually boring and repetitive. When she was herself, she was really fun. Steffi Graf, Virginia Wade on Steffi Graf. The perfect athlete. Also Bud Collins on Steffi playing with injury. When considering Steffi's greatness, one has to take into account the many ways in which she was praised. There are many such examples in this archive. Here she is praised for her athletic talent and for her ability to play through pain and injury. Remember these criteria when judging today's players. WTA Championships 1998

Here's a video I made about the great Steffi Graf. It took me forever to finish it but finally here it is. Steffi's words to the Umpire on her last French Open Final in 1999 'Are we just talking a little bit? Can we play Tennis? Ok!' (which is featured on the video) gave me the idea for the song, A Little Less Conversation by Elvis Presley. This video features some of Steffi's best Tennis shots as well as some funny moments on court. A couple of wrong shots, some anger and a lot of smiles. Everything that makes Steffi so human. I hope you like it. =)
Steffi Graf, 98 Advanta Final: The last two games. Steffi was still trying to comeback from major knee surgery in 1997. Davenport had just recently become the No. 1 player in the world. In another of those "statement matches," Steffi won. Advanta 1998
Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova on Steffi Graf: Who knows if Martina remembers what she said here. What is worth noting is that there was pressure on Martina to be objective under these circumstances. This was her first major broadcasting gig. Back in the day, HBO's coverage of Wimbledon was quite a lavish production. That explains all my clips from every match that Steffi played at that Wimbledon. Given the circumstances, there was peer pressure on Martina to provide insightful commentary. And, I think she did. Wimbledon 1996
Even though I can't understand a word of what they are saying, I still think it's funny. Does that make any sense? LOL And also, it's great to see Gaby and Steffi playing again.

Steffi Graf accomplishing her incredible Golden Slam in 1988. In this year, Steffi won all four grand slams, plus the Olympic Gold Medal that took place in Seoul. Steffi defeated Evert, Zvereva, Navratilova and Sabatini in her way on winning the GOLDEN SLAM.
St-Imier / Paris, 6 June 2009 The morning that has just come to an end at Roland Garros focused on children and generosity. After causing quite a stir by their arrival, Stefanie Graf and Andre Agassi joined young tennis talents from ten different countries to play eight matches on court no. 7. Despite the rain, both the children and the two champions were enthusiastic. At the end of the session, Longines for which the two tennis legends are Ambassadors of Elegance donated US$ 80000 to their two charity foundations. This was followed by a press conference in the Tenniseum the Roland Garros Museum with the two tennis champions and representatives of Longines and the Swatch Group. Stefanie Graf and Andre Agassi were invited to Roland Garros by Longines to mark the 10th anniversary of their singles victories at the legendary Paris tournament and today they have once again shown their commitment to children in need.

I have always been a great lover of Steffi Graf, for her talent and grace. After seeing this viedeo, I love her even more!
Sunday April 15th 2007 in Houston, for an Oprah fundaising event, Steffi and Andre were playing against two children. Coach Bryan had the bright idea to have Angre and Steffi hold hands while playing to give the children an advantage, when Andre's swing backs up into Steffi's face and busts her lip! Ouch! She left the court with a bloody towel over her face. She needed 3 stitches
Andre Agassi introduces his wife, Stefi Graf, at her induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame (2004). Here is a transcript of his speech: "I truly consider it a rare honor to stand here today before so many of you that have done so much for our sport and have meant so much to me and Stefanie. Looking out across this audience filled with warm friends and great champions I am overwhelmed with the history and the tradition of this moment." "As I attempt to find words worthy to introduce the person that has changed my life, I realize that the words have yet to be invented that are large enough, colorful enough or true enough to express the heart and soul of this woman that I love." "Stefanie, I wonder what can I possibly say to do justice to the way you've lived your life and to the lives that you have changed." "I began several years ago on the small chalkboard sitting in our kitchen, a tradition that I've carried on every night. At the end of each day I have picked up the chalk and tried to express the many things you mean to me. Sometimes just a brief line, sometimes a short story, but always just the overflow from a grateful heart, and yet after these months and years of writing to you each night I have never been at a shortage of ways to reflect the light you've brought into my life. And now how ironic that in these few short moments I need to capture in words these things I so deeply appreciate in you. Maybe I can say it to you this simple way." "Not long ...
Steffi Graf marriage proposal
MErry me Stefi!!
A musical number from "A Bit of Fry & Laurie." Gotta love Hugh's lisp. Lyrics (as I hear them...): She's got eyes like diamonds, Hair like twisted gold. When she looks up to me, I feel my blood run cold Now, I don't care if people laugh (A-ha) I'm in love with Steffi Graf I watched her all last summer; I watched her every day She knew that I was with her, She didn't have to say She can run, but she can't hide She knows I feel deep down inside.. That Steffi is an angel But she folds her wings And walks like you and me She's extremely good at tennis On any kind of surface there might be Clay or grass She'll flay your ass And when she hits that topspin second serve I think I know the meaning of love Eastbourne never was a favorite The outside courts were damp She had a hamstring problem And recurring muscle cramp But she dug deep and won it just the same My angel never lost a service game But now, a shadow in the distance A girl with ponytails Sixteen and full of hunger The end of Steffi's trail I can't wait for her defeat I fetch a knife and take my seat 'Cause Steffi is a goddess My love for her, it knows no bounds I'd kill to make her happy, Or just to get her through the early rounds Kill or maim It's just a game But if I had another life, I'd chose To come back as one of Steffi's shoes 'Cause Steffi is an angel But she folds her wings And walks like you and me
