MS Delphin sailing Strait of Magelhaen / Beagle Channel, Jan. 13, 2010. The Strait of Magellan (also called the Straits of Magellan or the Magellanic Strait) comprises a navigable sea route immediately south of mainland South America and north of Tierra del Fuego . The waterway is the most important natural passage between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans, but it is considered a difficult route to navigate because of the unpredictable winds and currents and the narrowness of the passage. (en.wikipedia.org) The Beagle Channel is a strait separating islands of the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago, in extreme southern South America.[1] It separates Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego from the islands Nueva, Picton, Navarino, Hoste, Londonderry, Stewart Islands and other smaller to the south. Its eastern portion is part of the border between Chile and Argentina, but the western part is completely within Chile. The west end is the Darwin Sound and the east end is Nueva Island. The Beagle Channel is about 240 kilometres (130 nmi; 150 mi) long and is about 5 kilometres (3 nmi; 3 mi) wide at its narrowest point. To the west the Darwin Sound connects it to the Pacific Ocean. The biggest settlement on the channel is Ushuaia in Argentina followed by Puerto Williams in Chile, two of the southernmost settlements of the world. (en.wikipedia.org)

For her MIO-essay (MIO = Dutch abbreviation for 'sailor in training') about the social life on board the clipper Stad Amsterdam, Yara Rood wrote the following poem: Spoken language in the movie: english ------------------------------------ A sailor's life Sailors are peculiar creatures Equipped with some disturbing features; They growl, they fight, they scold and yell, And always have some tough stories to tell. Never satisfied with their wage, They're oft quite easy to enrage Truth be told, it's no simple life So far away from husband or wife All over the seven seas they roam Calling a sturdy ship their home. Observing them in their natural habitat - Well, you just ain't seen nothing yet! From a landlubber's point of view Their whole world is strange and new Working hard, be it night or day (Darkness won't stand in their way) Teamed up in watches of quite a few But it can be solitary, too; Working aloft for hours straight Seeminglessly unafraid, In storm, hail, sun or rain, Freezing, sweating or in pain. The one thing that can keep you going strong Is for all to strive to get along For there are some difficulties you face Living together in so little space On a ship, when people get annoyed They're not that easy to avoid. When you work and live together too There's nowhere to hide for you.. And so the life requires social adaptations Trust, commitment, respect, patience Once you have these skills, you'll survive And enjoy a blissful sailor's life. Written on board the ...

A mildly satirical edition of magellan's voyages. Following is the speech given before watching the video if you are showing it for educational purposes. Magellan was born circa 1480 at Sabrosa in Portugal. He moved to Spain and was hired by the Spanish King to find a westward passage to the Spice Islands. On August the 10th 1519, five of Magellans ships, the Trinidad, San Antonio Concepcion, Victoria and the Santiago set sail from the port of Seville. They sailed along the Guadalquivir River to the mouth. Magellan set sail from the mouth with approximately 270 men on September 20th. After a brief stop off at the Canary Islands Magellan arrived at Cape Verde where he set course for Cape St. Augustine in Brazil. South America was sited on the 6th of December. On the 13th of December, Magellan anchored near what is today Rio de Janeiro, where they were delayed for several days due to bad conditions. After the delay, they set sail along South Americas east coast and reached Rio de la Plata on the 10th of January 1520. On April the 2nd 1520, mutiny broke out on two of the ships but it was unsuccessful and several of the disloyal men were executed. The Santiago was sent down the coast on a scouting expedition and was wrecked in an unexpected storm but all of its crew survived. On October the 21st, the ships reached Cape Virgenes where four of the ships began the 600km voyage through what is today called the Strait of Magellan where the San Antonio deserted the expedition ...

The Strait of Magellan (often referred to as the Straits of Magellan and rarely as the Magellanic Strait) comprises a navigable sea route immediately south of mainland Chile and north of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego. The waterway is the most important natural passage between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans, but it is considered a difficult route to navigate because of the inhospitable climate and the narrowness of the passage. Ferdinand Magellan (the original name, in Portuguese, Fernão de Magalhães), a Portuguese sailor in service to the Spanish King, became the first European to navigate the strait in 1520, during his global circumnavigation voyage. Because Magellan's ships entered it on November 1, All Saints' Day, it was originally named Estrecho de Todos los Santos (Strait of All Saints). Later the Spanish king changed the name to Estrecho de Magallanes in honor of Magellan. Since its discovery the Spanish Empire and the Kingdom of Chile saw it as its southern boundary. The first Spanish colonization attempt was led by Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa who founded Nombre de Jesús and Rey Don Felipe on its northern shores. The cities suffered severe food shortages, and years afterwards in 1587 the English navigator Sir Thomas Cavendish landed at the site of Rey Don Felipe and found only ruins of the settlement. He renamed the place Port Famine. Other early explorers included Francis Drake. The strait was first carefully explored and thoroughly charted by Phillip Parker ...
