A major earthquake has shaken Indonesia's northwest island of Sumatra, prompting a brief tsunami warning and sending residents rushing for higher ground. The US Geological Survey says a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at sea about 215 kilometers northwest of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The quake was felt throughout northern Sumatra and in Malaysia. Local news reports say that patients from some area hospitals were evacuated and that some residents fled to high ground in case of a tsunami. Electricity in some areas was cut off but so far no major damage has been reported. The Indonesia Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning following the quake, but lifted it two hours later. Susan Potter, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey, says because the earthquake originated deep below the surface of the earth, the chances of it producing a major tsunami are low. "This earthquake occurred at approximately 31 kilometers. To be an extremely shallow earthquake, it would be around 10 kilometers or so," said Potter. "An extremely large earthquake above the magnitude eight that was an extremely shallow depth, around a depth of 10 kilometers, would be prime candidate for creating, I am not saying definitely a large tsunami, but perhaps a regional tsunami or a tsunami in general. So the deeper the earthquake occurs, the less likely it is to cause a large scale tsunami." Earthquakes are common in this region. Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ocean's so ...

The Official C11australia News Story Here: sites.google.com -Channel 11 News Story #1- A major earthquake off the coast of North Sumatra has caused widespread panic and electricity blackouts across the Indonesian province as residents rushed to higher ground. But sea levels rose only 46 centimetres after the quake, the Indonesian meteorology agency said, prompting it to withdraw a tsunami warning. Indonesian agencies reported that the quake struck just before 5.15am local time (8.15am AEST) at a depth of 31 kilometres and about 204 kilometres off the coast of Sibolga, between the islands of Simeulue and Nias. The US Geological Survey registered its strength at 7.7 on the Richter scale. Hundreds of houses in Simeulue have been damaged, local media reports say, but there were no reports of widespread casualties, although people remained out on the streets, wary of aftershocks. The force of the quake was felt as far as Medan, the capital of North Sumatra about 500 kilometres from the epicentre of the quake. Residents fled their homes while patients were moved out of hospitals amid fears of power aftershocks. Even so, early reports suggested damage to buildings was minimal in Medan and electricity is back on in the city. Panic in Aceh Officials in Sinabang, on the east coast of Simeulue Island, and the Indonesian capital Jakarta said there were no immediate reports of damage. Electricity was down in the Acehnese capital Banda Aceh but mobile phones were working. "Our ...
SUMATRA, Indonesia - An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 rattled the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday, shaking buildings, causing blackouts and prompting a tsunami warning that sent people rushing to higher ground. There were no immediate reports of injuries or widespread damage. The quake struck at 5:15 am local time and was centered 125 miles northwest of Sibolga, in Sumatra, a major island in western Indonesia, the US Geological Survey reported. It was about 28 miles deep, the agency said. The Indonesia Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning following the quake, which struck as people in the predominantly Muslim region were preparing for morning prayers. The warning was later lifted.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A 7.8 earthquake shook Indonesia's northwest island of Sumatra early Wednesday, prompting a brief tsunami warning and sending residents rushing for higher ground. There were no immediate reports of widespread damage. The quake struck at 5:15 am (2215 GMT) and was centered 125 miles (205 kilometers) northwest of Sibolga in Sumatra at a depth of 28.6 miles (46 kilometers), the US Geological Survey said. The Indonesia Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning following the quake, but lifted it two hours later. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu also issued a tsunami watch. The center said no tsunami threat existed for other coastal areas in the Indian Ocean, although some areas could experience small sea level changes and strong or unusual coastal currents. Fauzi, an official at the meteorology agency's Jakarta office who uses a single name, said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties but officials were monitoring the situation. Local media reports said the quake, which struck as people in the region were preparing for morning prayers, caused panic in North Sumatra's capital of Medan and other cities in the province. Electricity was cut in Medan. People in some cities along the southeastern coast of Sumatra as well as Sinabang on Simeulue island and Gunung Sitoli on nearby Nias island poured into the streets and rushed to higher ground, reports said.

NASA say the Chile Earthquake was so powerful it shifted Planet off its axis & shortened the length of the day. Michio Kaku Explains The Earth Axis Shift Caused by the Earthquake. Chile Earthquake: Shock effect on Earth's axis The earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday may have shifted the Earth's axis and created shorter days. David Adam guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 2 March 2010- www.guardian.co.uk The earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday may have shifted the Earth's axis and created shorter days, according to scientists at Nasa. Richard Gross, a geophysicist at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said the 8.8 magnitude quake could have moved the Earth's axis by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8cm) enough to shorten a day by about 1.26 microseconds. A large quake can shift huge amounts of rock and alter the distribution of mass on the planet. When that distribution changes, it changes the rate at which the planet rotates, which determines the length of a day. "The length of the day should have got shorter by 1.26 microseconds," Gross told the Bloomberg news agency. "The axis about which the Earth's mass is balanced should have moved by 2.7 milliarcseconds." Gross previously used the technique to estimate the shift caused by the 2004 Sumatran quake that caused the Indian Ocean tsunami. That 9.1 magnitude quake shifted the Earth's axis by 2.3 milliarcseconds and shortened a day by 6.8 microseconds. David Kerridge, a seismologist with the British ...
