Tsunami - 26th December, 2004 On 26th December 2004 at 00:58:54 UTC, an undersea earthquake occurred with its epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The energy it released was equivalent to around 475000 tons (475 kilotons) of TNT explosive. The entire planet Earth vibrated as much as 1cm, with other earthquakes being triggered over the globe, as far as Alaska. The overall death toll reached over a staggering 225000 people, plus more than 500000 injured, from eleven different countries- parents, siblings, brothers and sisters were lost. Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India were the worst hit. On top of this, up to 5 million lost their homes or access to food and water, 1 million were left without the means to make a living. The disaster triggered a worldwide humanitarian response, with more than $7 billion in humanitarian aid being donated. The recovery process is those parts worst hit still continues in places.
A major earthquake that struck off the coast of Aceh on Indonesia's Sumatra island has sparked panic amid tsunami alerts.
A major earthquake has shaken Indonesia's northwest island of Sumatra, prompting a brief tsunami warning and sending residents rushing for higher ground. The US Geological Survey says a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at sea about 215 kilometers northwest of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The quake was felt throughout northern Sumatra and in Malaysia. Local news reports say that patients from some area hospitals were evacuated and that some residents fled to high ground in case of a tsunami. Electricity in some areas was cut off but so far no major damage has been reported. The Indonesia Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning following the quake, but lifted it two hours later. Susan Potter, a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey, says because the earthquake originated deep below the surface of the earth, the chances of it producing a major tsunami are low. "This earthquake occurred at approximately 31 kilometers. To be an extremely shallow earthquake, it would be around 10 kilometers or so," said Potter. "An extremely large earthquake above the magnitude eight that was an extremely shallow depth, around a depth of 10 kilometers, would be prime candidate for creating, I am not saying definitely a large tsunami, but perhaps a regional tsunami or a tsunami in general. So the deeper the earthquake occurs, the less likely it is to cause a large scale tsunami." Earthquakes are common in this region. Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ocean's so ...

JAKARTA, Indonesia — A 7.8 earthquake shook Indonesia's northwest island of Sumatra early Wednesday, prompting a brief tsunami warning and sending residents rushing for higher ground. There were no immediate reports of widespread damage. The quake struck at 5:15 am (2215 GMT) and was centered 125 miles (205 kilometers) northwest of Sibolga in Sumatra at a depth of 28.6 miles (46 kilometers), the US Geological Survey said. The Indonesia Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning following the quake, but lifted it two hours later. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu also issued a tsunami watch. The center said no tsunami threat existed for other coastal areas in the Indian Ocean, although some areas could experience small sea level changes and strong or unusual coastal currents. Fauzi, an official at the meteorology agency's Jakarta office who uses a single name, said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties but officials were monitoring the situation. Local media reports said the quake, which struck as people in the region were preparing for morning prayers, caused panic in North Sumatra's capital of Medan and other cities in the province. Electricity was cut in Medan. People in some cities along the southeastern coast of Sumatra as well as Sinabang on Simeulue island and Gunung Sitoli on nearby Nias island poured into the streets and rushed to higher ground, reports said.

The 2004 Asian Tsunami was caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, which was an undersea megathrust earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC on December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The quake itself is known by the scientific community as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake. The resulting tsunami itself is given various names, including the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Asian Tsunami, Indonesian Tsunami, and Boxing Day Tsunami. The earthquake was caused by subduction and triggered a series of devastating tsunamis along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing nearly 230000 people in fourteen countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters (100 feet) high. It was one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the hardest hit. With a magnitude of between 9.1 and 9.3, it is the second largest earthquake ever recorded on aseismograph. This earthquake had the longest duration of faulting ever observed, between 8.3 and 10 minutes. It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.4 inches) and triggered other earthquakes as far away as Alaska. The plight of the many affected people and countries prompted a widespread humanitarian response. In all, the worldwide community donated more than $7 billion (2004 US dollars) in humanitarian aid.
