The Corpse Flower commonly known as Amorphophallus titanum, bloomed in Binghamton NY on 9/14/10. It only blooms for 24 to 36 hours and we got there after 25 1/2 hours and she had begun to close up. The smell was not that bad as it was when it first bloomed. It smelled like hot soiled diapers sitting in the July sun. It also left a foul taste on the palate. The Vestal Sewage Treatment Plant just down the road was far worse. Now that made me want to hurl... How much did we spend on that? But I digress, it was still pretty amazing to see. Hella koo... Music by Mark Dickinson from the album "In A Vacant Building" Soundtrack.

biogreenhouse.binghamton.edu It's blooming awful! Rare corpse flower expected to thrill Binghamton University greenhouse goers It's going to cause a stink at Binghamton University's EW Heier Teaching Greenhouse but the staff can hardly wait. One of their largest charges -- the Amorphophallus titanum aka corpse flower or titan arum -- is getting ready to bloom and expected to show off its strikingly good looks on or around Tuesday, September 14. Believed to be one of the world's largest flowering plants, the bloom is expected to last only a day. But while the flower is stunning, it's the smell that really knocks people off their feet. Reminiscent of the odor of decomposing flesh, the aroma is expected to permeate the area in and around the University's greenhouse. The EW Heier Teaching Greenhouse will offer extended hours for visitors eager to get a whiff of Metis. The facility will be open from 10 am- 4 pm Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11-12, and when near or at full-bloom stage, the greenhouse will also offer evening hours.

In this video from the Bold, Brilliant, Binghamton campaign launch (visit www2.binghamton.edu ) Omowunmi Sadik, professor of Bioanalytical, Materials & Environmental Chemistry, has discovered many things in life, perhaps none more important than the value of challenging traditional perspectives in order to find new solutions to old problems. Her work on sensors has earned her two patents and given doctors a tool to find the HIV virus in minutes rather than the three to four days required by conventional methods. Bold, Brilliant, Binghamton. The campaign for Binghamton University celebrates progress, as well as the people on whose shoulders we stand, while also motivating us to fulfill our promise to future generations.
