More than 900 people were rescued from a ferry that sank in the southern Philippines on Sunday the 6th. Rescue ships are searching for two persons still unaccounted for. Officials are set to begin a marine inquiry on the disaster. [Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo, Coast Guard Chief]: "At this point we have no basis for our decisions. We have yet to convene the Board of Marine Inquiry. And our target is to start by Friday. Admiral Tamayo says the incident did not seem to be a terrorist attack. [Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo, Coast Guard Chief]: "As of now there's no indication of any terrorist influence on the incident. The "Superferry 9" showed signs of trouble at around 2:30 am local time on Sunday, tilting 35 degrees. Eventually the crew had passengers abandon ship as a precaution. The weather was clear, but reports reveal the vessel's generator went on and off. After all the passengers and crew abandoned ship, the ferry capsized, then completely submerged. Authorities are also monitoring for any oil spillage, as the ferry was loaded with over 200 tons of fuel. Ferries are an important mode of transport in the Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7000 islands. But accidents are common, because of overcrowding, poor maintenance and tropical storms. Last year, more than 800 people were killed when the Princess of the Stars ferry capsized during a typhoon.

Maritime and naval authorities quickly responded to a distress call when the ferry began listing shortly before dawn. A fleet of fishing boats joined in, hurrying to the aid of the stricken ferry, with 964 souls on board. Survivors, who docked in Zamboanga City, spoke of panic and confusion as the captain gave the order to abandon ship. [Unidentified Passenger]: "The crew was gone, all of them were gone. We were gathered at the ship's rear, there were around 100 of us." Rizel Lardan wept as she recounted how a stranger who tried to help a child ended up drowning. [Rizel Lardan, Rescued Passenger]: "A man who was helping a child, hit his head on the boat and fell. The child was crying and crying, and the man accidentally let go of him. The man drowned."
